That looks nice I am working on a 2nd generation Ford lightning trying to get ideas and colors great job love it. If anyone has any advice I greatly appreciate it. I have a tank and gun I'm thinking of going with Rustoleum paint. I just don't have the money for a 3000 dollar paint job at the moment.
Krylon has an implement paint in New Holland blue, you can just thin and spray or they have a catalyst hardener for a few more bucks to dry a little faster and give it a harder surface. Best of luck.
I am a professional master aircraft painter of 27 yrs. I do not advocate spray painting without a respirator. Please don't spray anything paint or anything else without respiratory protection. Your lungs do not come with replaceable filter cartridges. Your painting efforts are admirable. Please for your own personal protection, use a respirator. You'll live longer. 👍👍👍🫁🫁🫁🫁🫀🫀🫀🫀
I think I would have started with the roof and the hood, then worked my way to the vertical panels where I could stand on the ground. I see others suggesting hardener. Corrotech or Valspar are common, there's a lot to be said for enamel that hardens all the way through in a day. But you're sprucing up the truck, and that looks much better!
@@anthonymaniz9896 I've used both the Corrotech and the Valspar with Rust-Oleum. Dries hard all the way through in a day and improves the gloss retention. My truck is OSHA Safety Red.
Your spray technique needs some work but at least you gave it a go and went to town. For a work truck it's almost impossible to completely screw it up with an hvlp sprayer. Looks much better than when you started!
I'm not afraid of getting the plan demic. OH you mean a paint respirator ? Have one some where but couldn't find it & was in a hurry. Plus I have a huge exhaust fan mounted in ceiling and went outside when it started getting a little bad. But you are correct I should wear one. Thanks for your concern 😉
I bought the same paint and color for my 78 f150 back in 96, it was a nice color. I'm getting set up to paint my 91 gm with a Krylon implement New Holland blue next week.
Dang more an more im thinking about getting a cheap spray gun or two, then doing a rustoleim job like this. then maybe wet sanding to get the imperfections out. This turned out pretty good thanks for the vid
I've done this and it's not worth it! It looks good at first, but won't last. Buy good automotive paint from a paint shop. It will cost more, but it will be worth it. With all the effort you're going to put in, don't waist it on rubbish paint.
Being involved in Auto body yeah you start from the top. The way this man is doing it he's going to do the top last and throw all that over spray on the hood. He should have wet the floors help keep the dust out of the paint.
Not Bad! Overlap, distance, sweeping motion and speed. Your weeping distance angles go off toward the end of the panel, maintain gun squares and distance to panel all the way through the stoke. Your over all distance of each pass needs to be maintained. Overlap, needs to be constant 50? Speed of passes can be estimated by watching your wet edge. Think Like a robot.
Yes, a mask is important! My wife is a respiratory therapist! Lungs r important, a mask is very important! Once the little fibers in your lungs plug up it's good night Irene!
I'm no safety nanny, but that looked like a pretty confined space, how were you not gasping on lacquer thinner fumes/vapour.? Need an airsource hood to wear, or do outside on a calm no wind morning.
Please wear a respirator. I realize it does not have isocyantes in that paint but now your lungs have to somehow eject all that paint. I am 62 and I have spots on my lungs from when I was in my early 20's and I painted with a leaky N95. Best wishes
You should have sprayed the hole truck at one time starting at top of the door going to the bottom and including the finder at the se time but all in it looking ok
I won't critique or chastise you for not wearing a respirator (you should)... I'll just say thank you for picking a color other than satin black. That Rustoleum blue is pretty dang close to the older Ford blue engine engine color. Nice choice!
I give you credit attempting to paint your truck here comes the but. --- start at the top , use multiple light coats, on the hood start from center out to fender. Eliminates belly touches and hose touches. Always be in a comfortable position and WEAR A MASK !!!!! I don't get why people refuse to follow the manufacturers recommend thinning products. Lacquer thinner is used when thinning lacquer paint THEY ARE COMPATIBLE WITH EACH OTHER. Also good for cleaning.
Thanks . I've never used hardener with Rust-Oleum it holds up very well on its own. As for fisheye never tried it with rustoleum and never had a problem with it. Didn't really want to add anything to the paint not knowing what it could possibly do to the mixture. Automotive paint definitely would add fisheye. the nice thing about rustoleum is if you screw any of it up just let it dry and wet sand it and give it a little respray in that area you can't even tell you fixed it.
You can add about anything you want to to Rust-Oleum. I have read people useing laquer thinner, paint thinner mineral spirits, Acetone and reducer. I used Acetone to thin it when I painted my trailer recently cause that's what a guy I been watching always uses on his paint jobs . I have seen hardener used as well
@@TORCHBROTHERS I've used enamel hardener with Rustoleum and it makes the paint very hard and durable. It also dries a lot faster. I painted one of my lawnmowers with it and gas doesn't affect the paint at all.
Yes, you lightly wet sand it with 800 grit and use rust oleum clear. I sold the truck shortly after I made this video. The buyer had no idea It was rust oleum paint job until I told him. And he couldn't believe how nice it was.
What was the exact color name on the bucket. Trying to purchase the same color. Hopefully painting my mini Ford ranger this same blue but can't seem to find the exact one.
It's Rust-Oleum and you have to buy the base paint and have them mix it. The color is called Ford blue no numbers or nothing they have paint charts and it was just called Ford blue
I did an 88 f-350 in nearly the same color. I used rusto rattle can and it was called sail blue . Just a shade darker than this video . Mine is sitting wet sanded after the first shot , this spring I'll clean it up again mask and shoot it again , then by July I'll be ready to buff then clear wait repeat , wait repeat! Working by yourself like the video is tuff in a cramped garage.
I used to know a guy who painted cars without a respirator. Yes I said used to. He's not around anymore. And the last time I saw him he was in really bad shape. The chemicals in paints attack your nervous system, respiratory system, and worst of all they attack your reproductive system. You can become impotent from breathing in paint fumes. It can even soak into your skin and get into your bloodstream that way and have the same effect. ALWAYS WEAR A RESPIRATOR WHEN SPRAYING PAINT!!! WEAR GLOVES WHEN HANDLING CHEMICALS!!!
What is the colour of the paint if I were to go buy it at the store or even the paint code would be nice thank you I love the colour and want to do my truck rims with it
You don't really need to with alkyld enamel paints. Wet sand and polish and they get a beautiful shine. I have been painting my Black Trooper with Behr spray paint gloss black. Then wet sand with 1000,1500,2000 then rotary machine polish using Malco.
What size air compressor do you use in gallons think the one I used was less than 30 gallon air compressor but the paint job didn't come out good enough.
Man that paint mist is real shitty to your lungs! Do yourself a favor and buy a good respirator! Appreciate you putting out this video! That’s a nice blue!

So after a year has it held up well? did you put any clearcoat over the top and about how many quarts did you need for the truck? I think I might try this as I like the rustoleum products for their durability on household outdoor metal
It has held up very well after a year. It has a couple of nicks and scratches in it but not a big deal I'll just sand them down and respray since I didn't use a clear coat. right now I'm actually trying to sell the truck. So I might not do anything to it. I used about three quarts for the whole cab and front end. If you're going to do a whole vehicle I would suggest buying a whole Gallon. You can actually see what it looks like now I just posted a recent video of it.
