Cheffy tips: When chopping onions, the root/core on one end that you would throw away anyway releases the worst of the irritating odors so minimize/avoid cutting it. Having a razor sharp knife is also important to minimize how much gas is released, and you can try briefly chilling the onion in the fridge or using a fan to blow the gasses away to reduce it more. Beyond that, the particular kind of onion makes a big difference. Try a sweet onion like Vidalia or the like. Red onions are also fairly low irritation, then non-sweet yellow and white get worse. They less irritating the onion though, the less intense 'bite' it will have if that is the particular flavor you are aiming for (e.g. vidalias still taste oniony, but with less 'burn' to the flavor).
Best thing about this arc is it shows how much proper planning can handle. Luffy keeps catching fools with their proverbial pants down. So the Chaos works in there favor. But this arc the crew has something they must do before leaving; and Johnathan is great at getting others to act within the box. If he was fleet admiral instead of just in charge of one base I think the pirate population would go down drastically within a year.

G8 Is one of the best written filler arcs in the whole series. It flows like it's part of the story. It's almost frustrating that it's _not_ a legitimate part of the story.
The next arc, Long Ring Long Land, is canon but it has "anime canon" in the middle. For the anime watchers, it's generally pretty low on the "favorites" scale. Some might even tell you a skip it. Don't. 213 - 216 are the anime canon episodes. I'd get them all over at once. 217 - 219 is canon and finishes the arc. 220 - 225 is filler. Not one I particularly like, but everyone has their own tastes. The Canon story picks back up in 226, and from that point on you are in for a hell of a ride.
looking at all those missing spaces in the subtitles, it looks like theyve taken separate pairs of subtitles and put them together every time theres a lot of dialogue as the missing space always seems to be near the middle of longer subtitles, whereas it doesnt happen with shorter sentences
I think all of the missing space issues are either at the end or start of a line in multi-line dialogue, so it looks to me like someone messed with the wordwrap settings after the subtitles had already been written not realizing it would cause havok because the software wasn't inserting spaces when a line break moved.
Btw, it's super fun to hear you think about the powerscale here :) Because you're right, at this point the average shonen goon is not a threat at all. Slight spoiler maybe: Still, they're not even in the new world yet! Remember it was mentioned: First half of the grandline where they are now, New World is the second half.

You're saying that getting out of G-8 is easy for the Strawhats. However, it would be foolish to just assume that because they've fought Enel, Crocodile, etc... xD You don't know what the enemy is capable of. The Marines also have powerful people. Unless you've seen the strength of Jonathan and his men, you can't judge how much of a threat they are. That's also why Robin with her strength is in disguise. And the G-8 is a fort and therefore it's difficult finding a way out with the Going Merry.
I'm glad you're watching this arc. The premise is great, Jonathan is great, and there are some important character growth moments, like with Chopper. I hadn't bothered looking up which arcs were filler at this point, and I would have guessed G8 was official and Long Ring was filler. (I haaaaaated Long Ring, good luck getting through that, but I promise there's absolute gold on the other side.)
I feel like the fact that G8 works so well as filler is that rather than shoehorning a major battle that needs to be ignored in the future, it's more of a character study on the Straw Hats (both individually and interacting with each other). It helps that those in charge of this arc had an excellent grasp on everyone's personalities.

They partied for three days left on the fourth and its now day 2 after arriving at night in g8. You are strongly underestimating what the Marines are capable of.
