Black Throat Monitor, The Best Pet Lizard?
Vložit
- čas přidán 9. 08. 2019
- The black-throated monitor (Varanus albigularis ionidesi) is one of the biggest and most prehistoric lizards that you can get. Because they are huge, they are unreasonable pets, but their personality and care requirements actually make them one of the most reasonable unreasonable pets there are. That is why they were on our list of Five of the Best GIANT Reptiles. They are incredible, but is the black throat monitor the best pet lizard for you?

Clint's Reptiles when will u review the roughneck monitor
Soon.
Black throat monitors are named white throat monitors (varan bělotlamý) in Czech
Ha please do a Asion water monitor next
Oh wow man. :D
Clint: "Before interacting with a Black Throat Monitor, you must become-"
Me: "One with the monitor..."
One does not simply hold a monitor.
When he eats you xD
I'm one with the monitor, and the monitor is with me.
Scottish.
He suddenly turned into a scottish guy.
"You can always tell someone who owns a monitor because it looks like they have OTHER serious problems"-Clint's best joke of 2019
I cringe when I see photos of people with black throats in their house because I just know they're not getting the environment they should
Psych R.N here: Great joke tastefully done. Sensitively put.
@@willowmoon7I only have two green iguanas but they have full bedroom lol this reptile is on my hit list and I will also provide a full bedroom 🎉 seems more then enough for a proper environment 🎉
Walking out of NARBC one day I was asked “Monitor? Iguana? Or something else?”. I want one, I just was behind on clipping my iguana’s nails.
I know this one all too well! Having to explain lizard scars and still getting the doubting eye... 🤦🏾🤦🏾😅😅😅
They have such intelligent eyes, so aware.
I really like them.
There is some kind of serious intellect looking back at you in those eyes.
Theeyes remind me of a bird of prey
Those eyes look as though he understands every word . I am so surprised that he actually likes being touched .
I'm constantly amazed by the variety of living organisms that like being pet.
Like being pet,,?
Ikr?! It’s insane how many animals just enjoy their back being rubbed or their head being patted.
@@connorkitchen7285 Humans also,
Humans like to be petted too. We just don’t call it that. “Back rub,” “neck rub,” etc etc. it’s just being petted. Wow, sounds weird saying it out loud 🤣
@@The_Rob_D yeah man it’s just such a unique feeling too it’s indescribable
Eyes monitor: °°
Clint: mice and rats and quils
Eyes monitor: OO XD
Your mouth says “unreasonable”.
But Oscar’s behavior when petted says “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!”
This is the best summary of the video
Don't forget about the bulky T-Rex shaped head.
I love these guys. If I ever suffer a temporary lapse of sanity and decide to bring a big lizard home, a black throat will be the only one on my list.
Brett Perry And if you win the Publisher’s Clearinghouse! 😂
“U can get away with a smaller enclosure until they become obese and die” I don’t if I should laugh or feel bad
“U can always tell if someone
has a big monitor because I it looks like they have other serious issues” 😅
@Chad Klaren sounds awesome
@Chad Klaren That was referring to a Savannah monitor
On Savannah monitors ..."until they get obese and die" LOL - pretty much sums it up
On large lizard owners..."they always look like they have other serious problems"
Get ready for people to think you cut yourself/self injure...when you explain "In not crazy, I just own a giant lizard," they look at you as if you are crazier than a person the cuts themselves! So true, so true.
I really love your sense of humor! I don't always agree, but I always enjoy your show. Please maybe do a show on Ctenosaura iguanas, much more manageable than green iguanas...Green Basilisk are also an interesting lizard to work with
Oh god yes i can relate my mates said "listen we need to chat stop cutting yourself"and i said it was my dog then they said"seriously dude you need to stop"Can't convince them otherwise...
@@FatesRhysHoward i had a kitten that adored playing cracting and biting my hands but as she grew so did her claws and teeth and eventually it looked like i was cutting and stabbing my arms all the time it was kinda hard to explain that it was my cat so i get you
LOL
IDK what people have against cutters. It's just something I enjoy, so STFU.
Monitors are awesome lizards. Definitely need a giant, zoo sized enclosure or an entire room for these beasts. Great video, Clint! 🦎👍
Hence the joy of ackies :)
He’s so cute. When you were petting him he was like ‘yes, human slave. Pet me. “
He's huge and only a juvenile 😮 he looks huggable as long as you dont mind a few chest scratches lol
Yes, they're very huggable. I don't think they really care much for the hugs, though, LOL!
You can place them on your chest when you're lying down, they love the body heat radiating from human so after a few time the monitor should just stay on you for hugs
@@socialreject2156 lmao o bet they do my Nile loves laying on me while I watch TV. Seeing this one has me wanting to convert a 2nd room to another dino den for a BTM but I don't want my Nile to get jealous. I have 5 years of daily handling a captive bred Nile and target training to get him to free roam and not want me dead and now he acts like a lapdog. I just don't know if I have the time for a 2nd giant lol
@@jeffreyhill1011 tbh btm are prob easier to tame than a Nile
I had a black throat for many years. Zilla was a wonderful companion though your right in saying they are expensive. He had his own room though he was often allowed out. They are extremely intelligent. Thank you for your video and for bringing me memories of a close friend and one of the best reptiles I have ever had. Zilla you are gone but never forgotten!
A further note, these big lizards really benefit from a bio-active setup. Just purely because the volume of substrate (more so than the financial cost) is massive to replace so just get a bunch of bugs to do the hard work. The type of plants you need will be trees and grasses (anything that is non toxic, but can cope with a massive lizard who will dig) and it might be worth waiting until they have settled on their burrow before you add the trees.
It'll be like having a zen garden/sunbed room, except there's a 50lb lizard in there with you :D
Great recommendations
Best Zen room ever!
Unfortunately they tend to trample every plant in the enclosure before too long
The Bentley and rolls Royce bit had me rolling 😂😂😂 Clint is too damn funny.
Some people simply have too much money. We're trying to help them.
Thank you for making your videos with a heavy emphasis on education and how to properly take care of all our reptile friends My entire family loves your Is this The Best Pet series so thank you.
I love how you cuddle up to these huge reptiles and how sweet they can be. But then I watch an iguana video and you look frozen stiff, like your trapped in a room with a cannibal and are trying to figure out if they are feeling peckish(or an ax murderer). The contrast makes me laugh every time.
I really love all these videos, because it really introduces animals I've never even heard of before. It's exciting to learn about these guys and the fact that you can actually keep these guys as pets(whether you should is another story) makes it more fascinating.
I love your overflowing positivity and humor! Even when you're saying negative or morbid things, you always sound so perky. 🤣🤣
Clint is like the Mr. Rogers of the CZcams reptile community.
What a gorgeous boy. He's so calm and chill.
Clint is a very calm man.
One thing I would like to see included: when you say a critter needs a "small" enclosure or a "quite a big" enclosure, it would be great if you provided estimates. Like 8'x8' or 18"x3' minimum. Other than that, I watch each and every episode! Even when it is a critter I am never ever going to get (no matter how stinkin' rad you say it is).
"You can always tell if a person has a big monitor.
Cause it looks like they have OTHER big problems".
I just love that line.
Combined with the smile had me dying!
I love giant reptiles I'm so glad you're doing them individually. I would love to see the Dumerils Boa one day. Great videos keep it up Clint you're stinking rad
Count on it! I love their pattern. One of my favorites.
You're genuinely one of the best reptile channels out there, and I cannot stress enough how much your input has swayed my previous judgements about certain animals. Thank you for doing what you do.
I had a 55 lb Blackthroat, Mojo, in a large outdoor enclosure 26×18×10 with full landscaping and even a koi pond with plants and a waterfall. The enclosure was underwired with hardware cloth to prevent digging. It was built with cemented in 4×4s, 2×4s with 1×2 trim and hardware cloth.
He ate everything from duck eggs to frozen or fresh rats, but his staple was ground turkey.
How long did mojo live? And was he friendly?
@blanco1231000
I had MOJO for about 5 yrs, got him when he was about 12" long. I had to rehome him when I moved to Wisconsin. He was 6'5" long and very tame.
That’s so cool I rehomed a female tegu I had for about 3 years. I regret it till this day. This was many years ago. I think it’s time for another lizard but to keep forever this time.
Such a glorious beast. Definitely going to get an ackie in the future.
Fantastic choice!
@@ClintsReptiles the availability of Savannah and Niles in my local pet shops is disturbing.
I love how you just hold him and pet him like you're an early 20th century aristocrat with his majestic champion show cat.
I almost enjoy the videos about unreasonable pets more. Your expressions and the language is entertaining and educational!
Hi Clint, great video! 💜 Also, a video on target training lizards would be invaluable to your subscribers. Please consider 😃🙏🏼
Lastly, Clint’s no-frills quote of the day - “Savannah monitors need as much space but you can get away with keeping it in a small enclosure for a few years until it becomes obese and dies.” 😂
I think that is a great suggestion! Also, hopefully that quote wasn't sugarcoated too much...
Clint's Reptiles It was completely appropriate.
I came here to post about target training videos as well! Thank you!
I have been waiting for this specific video for so long my life is complete!
I keep my black throat in my second Bently.
I love your sense of humor and depth of knowledge. It's informative but fun. The Jon Oliver of reptiles.
Hey, Clint, thanks for another great video. I love these lizards and sincerely hope I can get to a place in life where owning some of these unruly Giants is possible. In the meantime, watching you handle these Giants and show them in a positive, loving light while still warning people away is awesome. Dying to see a reticulated python video!
Would you be willing to do a future video on target training more in-depth?
Loving the videos! It's cool that you are covering some of the more "Difficult" pet reptiles. Black Throat Monitors are one of those reptiles I really like and I am excited to see what else is in store for the future. 2.6 score is a little rough but it makes sense for a lizard like this.
Hey Clint!! Hope everything is going well..just want to thank you for these reptile vidios🤘
Again you never disappoint Clint, love this channel

I would like to add the sunbeam snake and African house snake
Awww, ant he cute ,thank you for sharing him today.😊
Great advice / information 👌🏼
Awesome video love seeing videos that show how personable most monitors/tegus are. I get why you say 2.6 just cos they get so big to properly care for them you need a large enclosure and depending on where you live that can be a problem i live in FL so its easy to have a huge enclosure since i can keep it outside and food is expensive if you're keeping them well fed. I love how you cant even tell that hes not yours hes enjoying getting pet ive always loved how monitors close their eyes when they get pet on the head like scaly dogs.
What we have here is my dream lizard, but I know I won't be getting one inside the next couple decades. When I can devote a room in a house to gigantic reptile enclosures, then I shall get one of these big cuddly monsters. Love your videos Clint, you're such a positive guy, wholesome lizard talk really cheers me up.
I'm absolutely in love! Goals for 15/20 years from now when I will hopefully be able to keep one of these. What a beautiful creature!!
Your vids are great, Clint!
Thank you so much!
I watched this video months ago thinking I would never get a Black Throat. Now I have two lol. Thank you Clint for the informative video !
Even if you hated reptiles and crazy pets, you could love these videos for the dry humor. Hilarious!
These monitors are my dream companion. I've wanted a monitor since I was around 6 years old. And the blackthroat monitor checks almost all my boxes. Once I own a home (provided I'm financially able to provide for more than 2 humans) instead of renting that will be the day I start building a room for one. I may get a smaller one, but having had dozens of reptiles big and small, I'm fairly confident money will be the quantifying factor to pull the trigger. Such beautiful creatures. Thanks for this very informative video up close with this adorable guy. Would love to see him now 2 years later!
Definitely still one of my favorite lizards out there, I’d never consider getting one as a pet but they are just so dang cool looking
Congratulation on 100k you deserve 1 mil
next video: "Godzilla, The Best Pet Lizard?"
I've been patiently waiting to find one for sale for awhile, but this has to be my next favorite of your videos next to the Nile monitor😂
Yo Clint love the video and all the info you have provided for everyone. Maybe one day I'll have a house with a lot of room for one of these beautiful animals. Hope you and your family are well.
Awesome video Clint I love this giant lizard he's very well behaved for such a large lizard if only they were not so big haha I don't have the room
Another great video!!
Thank you so much!
Great video! I’m not sure if a blood python video is planned for the future, but a video on blood pythons/ short-tail pythons would be cool, since many people have misconceptions of their “aggressive” behavior.
I feel like you may have read my comment :) love what you do! Keep it up Clint!
love the video Clint! yes i agree that people shouldn't get this monitor as a starter or if they don't know what they're getting into but pretty much all monitor species start out (not considering the tail) about the size of a phone, most of the time smaller. it'll be at least 2 years before it even grows to the size of the monitor you have and that's more than enough time with regular interaction to learn monitor behaviors :)
Hopefully this channel saves a few animals and their naive keepers from disaster. That is our mission.
Thank you so much for getting me into reptiles
Gotta love monitors!!They are probably my favourite type of lizards!
One of my friends had to re-home a young Black Throat, and it was really vicious for years. It even gave me a scar as a relative baby. Luckily it did calm right down after about 3-4 years of hard work, which was good because it got to 8ft long and would have been very dangerous otherwise.
Definitely not for everyone, as the other that came in at the same time and went to someone else didn't calm down as much, so I can't say they all have "great personality" so beware.
Awesome video again clint! Can you do a video on a caiman soon? I'd love to see that.
Me too!
Great video! Have you made a video on croc monitors?? I would love to see one on them if not.
Hey clint love your videos keep up the good work also would you be able to make a video about blood pythons one day?
This and a Red Tegu are my absolute dream pets. I take care of both of those at the zoo and they're both absolute sweethearts. The Black-Throat is fully grown though and the Tegu is a female that I dont think is fully grown so I guess I havent interacted with a colossal lizard. But their personalities alone made me fall in love!
Lol love that monitor attitude. My little baby savannah monitor was mishandled before I got him and hated world. When I first got him he would huff and puff, death roll my finger, and tail whip. Considering he isn't even a foot long yet he's quite adorable when he's upset. Now I can pick him up and he'll eat off of tongs though, so great improvements.
The black throat monitor actually seems like my ideal pet except for the money and the size and the money and the money
What a fantastic creature, their head features are fascinating!
Also, could you do a video on smooth green snakes?
More Monitor Lizard reviews, please! I'd love it if you could do the Green Tree Monitor or Blue Tree Monitor.
Nice vid!
So cool. I can't wait to get to the point of being able to keep animals like these in a nourishing environment. But that's a long ways off so no point in dwelling on it now lol. Kind of surprised you didnt mention their venom, but still another great video with advice that is 100% on point. Let us know if views seem to be under reported again!
This video is stinking rad. I would love to see one on asian water monitors. Your videos are super informative and helpfull when considering which pet reptile is right for me
Love these videos. They're so informative and entertaining. I've always thought it would be cool to keep a black throat monitor, but I'm not Beamer, Benz, or Black Throat Monitor kind of rich. 😢
Love the video. Could you do a Dumeril's monitor some time? I recall you mentioning them in your Nile Monitor video and I'd like to see how they compare to black throats
These are absolutely incredible! If only I was rich 😭
I'm with you 100%
Really cool lookng monitor :) what about tree monitors? Would be awsome to watch a review of them.
Keep going, love your videos👍🏻
Great video!! Any plans to cover the arboreal monitors?
Omg, he is just so precious!!! I am insanely and utterly in love with him!!! Will probably settle for a Argentine tegu but my God I want a black throat!!! I've had Savannah monitors for years but have always dreamt of the black throats. I was lucky to have a buddy who was a big dubia supplier and he gave me his culled adults.
I'm still waiting for that video on the greatest lizard of them all: The middleschool hall monitor.
In germany we get reasonal lifespends out of savana monitors (like 17-20 years). But they are not cheap in germany. But Reptil.tv did a very goo video on savana monitors where he explains what they need... He went to africa to look how they live in their normal hebbitat (temriture, humidity, substrate and more)
But back to your video... Its awesome keep on the good work :3
Could you do a video on the target training?
Reptiles tend to be clever. If you're consistent in your actions then they'll figure it out even without special training. Even for my pet boa I always show her the rat box before I mess with the cage so she knows food is coming, and I always put it in the same spot. When she's hungry she'll go raise her head up at the specific spot I always put food to let me know. Although if I did it over I would strongly recommend feeding in a specific area so there's zero chance they're being fed inside their cage and reduce the risk of accidental bites.
Target training' the best pet ever?
I respect your advice and i acknowledge i cant properly house a black throat yet but one day i will own and properly care for my future black throat monitor. It is my motivation to be career successful.
wow what an amazing animal! That particular one seemed to be such a sweetheart! Good job to the owners and handlers of such a beautiful lizard!
For sure.
Can you borrow Rex and do an American Alligator video? Obviously more of a warning video but still.
We will cover alligators for sure.
@Mycel Rex is a bonsai alligator.
Mycel I mean also give a warning with it and tell Rex’s story. I figure the video would be warning against keeping alligators anyway.
@@ClintsReptiles American Alligators, or Dwarf Caimans?
He's so calm though! 😍
Have you ever considered doing a video on reptile enrichment like target training? I would love to see something like that!
Love when he just lies in his belly with just his legs splayed out. My man is chilling
Was that a scottish accent you were teasing there at the end? I'm gonna melt lol Anyway AWESOME video.. No way i could handle a lizard this size but he's so cool to watch! Nobody is gonna be cooler than Gus Gus though. 😁
I really love monitors they are gorgeous! I think if I could get my head around feeding them ( I don't even know if it HAS to be live food or not) but, I always watch your videos and am beginning to think I really want a monitor!
I've loved black throats but I don't have space or time to care for them properly. Cuties though.
Any chance we could get a video on plated lizards? Love the content!
Hey, I love your videos, you inspired me to get my western hognose (the first snake I ever bought from a pet store).
Do you have any plans on doing a racer snake video (the worst pet snakes)?
Such cool lizards!
Interestingy it seems that you feel much less in danger with that huge monster than with a smaller green iguana. Thanks for that great video, this reptile seems amazing and a good guy
Heyy Clint!👋 Awesome video!!(:
Question! Since technically birds are reptiles, will you ever do a bird video?🤔
Filming two this week :)
Can’t wait to see your silver plaque
Thank you so much! We're pretty excited for it to arrive 😁
that's one beautiful reptile!
Agreed 100%
Love black throat monitors they’re so chill when it comes to the monitor species
Ok, the accent at the end totally made me think of you as a Doctor Who!
