The Shining is one of the few horror films that actually unsettles me every time I watch it. I think maybe because even if there are supernatural elements to the movie, the plot of it feels so real. People try too hard to explain the supernatural things in this movie to find logical explanations for the paranormal activity that went on, when pretty much the movie points out that there are entities or spirits involved in the story, especially near the end when the pantry door is opened for Jack. There definitely were ghosts haunting the hotel but I don’t think Jack was possessed, I think he was more like influenced by the evil of the hotel, in Doctor Sleep the ghosts can get physical with people. But Jack was already an abuser, it was able to corrupt him slowly, he was a guy who battled alcoholism and had trouble with his family and a lot of other personal issues, the hotel brought these things to the surface. Pretty sure aside from the ghosts, that The Overlook has its own spirit or shine and is an entity in of itself. I know in the book people also reported seeing things in the hotel over the years, it just depends on how strongly people shine.

One that has a very similar, isolated, feel, but is a completely different type of horror movie, is John Carpenter's The Thing, 1982. The isolation of the Arctic station surrounded by snow, darkness, wind, ice, and fear is as isolating as that of the Overlook Hotel in the winter. The Arctic station even has a radio to communicate with others, but receives nothing. If you like feel of horror movies in complete isolation, give The Thing 1982, a try.

I was taking care of an old friend with Alzheimer's for a few months. A couple of decades earlier, she was a friend of mine who was an intelligent and seemingly, very Christian woman, but, by now, had no short-term memory. As a matter of fact, she made a goldfish seem like Rain Man. You'd think
this might be hard to deal with, but I found ways to entertain her for hours by playing the same songs she loved, many times over, like "Dancing Cheek To Cheek", each time seeming like a new experience for her that might have taken her back to a more meaningful time. Unfortunately for her, she kept on
thinking her house she lived in for over 50 years was MY house, and, if I didn't watch her, she'd be out the door looking for the that non-existent house. Since she had no short term memory, I felt that, if I didn't stop her, she MIGHT have ended up in the Pacific, for she was ALWAYS heading West when she got out the door. Anyway, because she kept on thinking her house my house, taking the "mi casa, su casa" to an extreme, I couldn't help but think of that scene in the movie, "The Shining", where the Jack Nicholson character was told by the character, Grady, that he was ALWAYS the caretaker, something the Nicholson character had no memory of. Because of that, I'd think of this song played at the very end of "The Shining", and, I'd play it for my old friend. She loved it, and, I'd play it over and over for her. As the song played, if she wasn't saying, "I'm thinking about this house", she'd ask me about MY house, which, again, was hers, and, I'd say with a with a British accent as I impersonated the Grady character from "The Shining", "You're the caretaker of this house, Miss Potter. You've ALWAYS been the caretaker, if I may be so bold." When I asked her where she thought her "REAL" house was, she would always point West. Believe it or not, there was a graveyard just some yards WEST of her house, and, she'd point to it. Looking back on it all, I'm thinking she might have been right... all that time.

Yes, I agree the timing was off. It was about a decade but I guess they thought most people wouldn’t catch on😂 They must have just felt there was no other song that would do the same justice (again they should’ve just dated the photo 1930)!

There are many things in the film that don't "make sense," but they are done intentionally. For example, the layout of the hotel, the different decor, and architecture don't make sense or flow. This was to help disorient the viewers further to make them feel uneasy.

How have I only just found this video? I found 'Midnight the Stars and You' last year in around June. The second I heard it I realised that it was one of the most beautiful songs ever created! Yes, it is creepy when used in The Shining, but the song itself is heavenly in its melody. Ray Noble's orchestra glide through the song like they're in orbit round the moon, while Al Bowlly graciously sings the simple but elegant words that mean so much. A beautiful song. Not only that one, but all of these songs on this video. If that's what music was back then then what a time it was to live.
