It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN out of the Nakatomi Building. 😎 🎄
Fun Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career.
First Face-Off Fact: The scene in which Gruber and McClane meet fir the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent.
Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls.

shoot out the window to alert the cop?!
He's on the 32nd floor of the building. that's about 210 meters. When I was younger, I worked construction on a 14 story building. Once you get above 8 floors, you can barely communicate AT ALL with the ground floor. Hammering, pounding, power saws and power tools are completely inaudible at that altitude. This is TWICE that height.
SO, John couldnt yell or shoot at the cop, until he breaks that window, WHICH is usually rated at a 70-90 mile/hr wind strength. . Those windows are thick, heavy and TOUGH. Additionally, if he started to break the window when the cop arrived, he wouldnt finish breaking the window before the cop got outta the car. He's waiting because he's HOPING and he's SMART: if the cop figures out there's trouble, John wont have to endanger himself by revealing his position.
Once he realizes the cop got fooled only THEN is it the smart thing to try ANYTHING to get his attention.

You asked how Karl was still alive at the end.
    Easy.
John wrapped that chain around Karl's neck and hung him from the ceiling right below the roof that blew up.
When the roof blew up, it also destroyed that ceiling so Karl fell to the floor.
Why didn't the chain around his neck kill him?
When you hang somebody, the two ways they might die are from a broken neck or from suffocation.
Breaking the neck means the person needs to fall at least a meter or so.
Karl did not fall so his neck did not break.
Suffocation takes about 4-5 minutes to kill a person.
Karl was only hanging for about a minute, maybe a little more, so he didn't suffocate.
It took him a bit to wake up and make his way down.
    You saw the result.

#1 the intention...director John McTiernan and writer Steven De Souza have confirmed that Die Hard is a Christmas movie (but there's more)
the Christmas theme and motif are central to the film
The basic narrative situation of Die Hard is a man traveling long-distance to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged wife and their children.
It's set at an office party on Christmas Eve
The chief villain Hans Gruber explicitly invokes the Christmas spirit: “It’s Christmas, Theo, it’s a time for miracles.”
As the vault door opens and the crescendoing chords of "Ode to Joy" boom over the soundtrack, Theo has the expression of a kid coming downstairs to see piles and piles of presents. "Merry Christmas," he whispers in awe. Merry Christmas, indeed
"Die Hard" is chock full of Christmas songs. Both the opening and closing credits, in fact, feature "Winter Wonderland" and "Let it Snow," there's Beethoven's "Ode to Joy,"and let's not forget Run-D.M.C.'s 1987 single "Christmas in Hollis." played by limousine driver Argyle when picking up John from the airport.
We have a story where one man is after pure material gain, using once-sincere beliefs as a disguise to get what he wants, while another man opposes him, fighting for his family and his principles and it all takes place on Christmas Eve. That sure sounds like a Christmas movie to me.
Love, sacrifice, family, friendship, good conquering evil, and reconciliation
    His wife is called Holly
    Hans is the Grinch
Argyle (as in socks) hangs out (like a stocking)
There is an invocation of Jesus Christ, Mary, & Joseph
Another big recurring theme of Christmas movies is a lack of faith and at first no one believes. Even John begins to lose hope but perseveres to the end
"Season's Greetings" packing tape inspiration used to tape hand gun to John McClane's back
Santa Claus makes an appearance Ho-Ho-Ho (even if it's in the form of a dead terrorist).
See, "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie!
    😉🎄🎅🦌✨

The shows we watched when I was a kid that defined Christmas were the Rankin-Bass stop-action "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (1964) and the animated "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (1966), which BTW was a heist movie like "Die Hard."

neither Die Hard or Home Alone is a christmas movie, theyre both movies that happen to be set at christmas time, but they have nothing to do with christmas and both couldve just as easily have been set at a different time of the year. A christmas movie is a movie about christmas. Neither Home Alone nor Die Hard qualify. I know that's an unpopular opinion, because I know it's "cool" to claim that Die Hard is a christmas movie, because people for some reason seem to think that makes them unique or something (all millions of them sharing that same sentiment...) and love to comment on Every. The only reason the two main characters, John McClane and Hans Gruber are in the building is because it's Christmas. John is there hoping the Christmas spirit of family will help him reconcile with his estranged wife. Hans is there to get rich by taking the Christmas party hostage. One represents traditional Christmas family values, the other the corrupted materialistic side of Christmas. And it ends with the former winning, and spending Christmas with his family.

You hit the nail on the head! It's a Christmas movie solely due to the time. That's it.
Growing up, one of my all time favorite Christmas movies was "Scrooge" starring Alistair Sim. A VERY close second would have to be "Scrooged" starring Bill Murray. The first is, of course, a direct reenactment of the Charles Dickens classic; the second a "modernized", comedic version from 1988.

Why Die Hard is a Christmas movie:
    - John McClane is going to see his wife for Christmas at a Christmas party being held by the company she works for. (IE this meeting wouldn't happen any other time of year.)
    - The rap Arguile is listening to in the limo is about Santa Claus "This IS Christmas music!"
    - The orchestra at the Christmas party is playing Ode to joe.
    - There's a huge Christmas tree
    - The guy that kisses John says "Merry Christmas."
    - Holly makes references to Rudolph, Frosty, and Scrooge.
    - Holly says to her daughter "We'll see what mommy and Santa can do, okay?"
    - Hans makes a reference to it being the "time of miracles" and tells Theo to be of "good cheer."
    - When Al is picking up Twinkies "for the wife." He's singing "Let it snow."
    - "Now I have a Machine gun - Ho. Ho. Ho." Would not work without it being Christmas.
    - Ode to Joy plays when the terrorists open the vault door and Theo says "Merry Christmas!"
    - The tape John uses to strap his pistol to his back is Christmas wrapping tape. If it wasn't the Christmas season he wouldn't have been able to save his wife.
    - Papers fall from Nakatomi like snow flakes while John and Holly drive away in the limo and "Let it snow" plays.
    - The movie has themes regarding family, redemption, and togetherness.

In a figurative sense, the film is closer to Christmas reality than most standard Christmas films. Parents in particular are allowed to feel like John MccLane when the kids really crank it up and let out all kinds of feelings. From joy to arguments and screams, everything is there. It's a nice metaphor for christmas. 🎅

Reasons Die Hard is a Christmas movie:
    (1) Hans chose Christmas Eve because the building would be mostly empty and vulnerable. The Antagonist needs it to be Christmas.
    (2) John is only there because he's visitng the family for Christmas. The Protagonist is only there because it's Christmas. Could they have written it differently and found plausible explanations for the coincidence of them both being there? Perhaps, but they didn't. Because they were making a Christmas movie.
    (3) Bloody as it is, it's essentially a feel good movie. We cheer when John chalks up another bad guy. We cheer louder when he follows the kill with a pithy one-liner. And we go batshit crazy at the end when Hollie punches out the reporter. Well, they did in my cinema, anyway (and I should tell you I'm a Brit and as a rule we don't cheer in cinemas. Maybe more common now, but in the 80s, nope. No way.)
    (4) After the first twenty minutes or so, no one dies who we care about all that much. We have some sympathy for the security guards downstairs, and we feel bad about Takagi, but after that it's deserved death all the way (you might argue that the cops outside the building and in the armoured car don't deserve it, but the way the movie plays at the very least our sympathy is tempered by how thick-headed they are going in the way they do). Other than that the gang members get what's coming to them, as does Ellis, and the FBI guys were set up as massive pricks precisely so that we shed no tears when their helicopter goes down.
    (5) There are movies which we consider Christmas movies that don't even take place exclusively at Christmas. Only the third act of It's A Wonderful Life is set at Christmas, for example. And whilst I'd never argue that It's a Wonderful Life is not a Christmas movie - you could argue that it is less of one than Die Hard. Not only does a good chunk of the film not take place at Christmas, but also the bad guy doesn't get his comeuppance. Potter steals the money and gets to keep it with zero consequences.
Going back to Die Hard - take Christmas away and the story doesn't work. It is possible to make a movie set at Christmas that isn't a Christmas movie, but to do that Christmas has to be an afterthought. Maybe it's only set at Christmas because the filmmaker wants the visuals and to use Christmas music. Or perhaps they're just setting it at Christmas because that's when it's due to be released. You spot those movies by the same test - can you take Christmas out of the equation without hurting the story?
It should be noted that Bruce Willis is on record denying that it's a Christmas movie. But charming as Bruce is as a screen presence, that doesn't make him right, and both the director and writer of the film have said quite clearly they think it is.

What a fantastic Christmas Reaction! 😅 So salty from the beginning, and just did not get hydrated the entire time, until maybe the end! Firstly, I don’t care if it’s considered Christmas or not, it’s a really good movie. I feel there are a lot of Shakespearean elements in it, like the story ark range of bad guys(from Hans to Ellis to the reporter) all look alike, the call backs like the glass from the explosion (“..who gives a fuck about glass?”) and then Johns feet, and a bunch more other stuff. As to the “Christmas Movie” aspect, one thing many might not get to is how it was snowing, in LA, in the end(you said raining), and the family was back together(like “Home Alone 1”). Speaking of Home Alone, how is that a Christmas Movie?! The horrible family, traveling to Paris(had to look it up, never seen it), where Christmas doesn’t even exist, leaves a poor kid behind, cuz they are all so narcissistic 😂, I’m kidding! I haven’t seen any of them, but they are definitely Christmas movies. The only Christmas movie I really like, besides “The Christmas Story”, which I was very late to, but have seen, is the version of “A Christmas Carol”, with George C. Scott, as Scrooge. That’s a very good rendition, in my opinion. The original story is amazing, if you read it. Dickens, tho a bit formulaic, is a favorite of mine! Great reaction, again! You are such an interesting individual, you make revisiting something I’ve enjoyed in the past really fun!🌷💐

While calling Die Hard a Christmas movie has always been a little tongue-in-cheek, I do have a defense for it.
Here in the U.S., and maybe elsewhere too, we consider It's a Wonderful Life to be a Christmas movie. Die Hard shares enough characteristics with it to justify the same designation.
    - Both movies have plots that have nothing to do with Christmas.
    - The protagonist in both movies finds himself in the midst of a disastrous emergency.
    - Both movies have an antagonist who is motivated solely by greed.
    - Someone fires a gun at least once in each movie.
    - At some point in time a Christmas carol or traditional Christmas song is sung.
    - The protagonist in each movie is kissed by a person who is not his wife
    - The protagonist removes at least one article of clothing at some point in each movie
    - The plot of each movie involves the reconciliation of a strained family relationship.
    - Someone falls off the edge of a high structure in each movie.
So there you go. If we can call It's a Wonderful Life a Christmas movie, we have to call Die Hard a Christmas movie. I rest my case.

Sts it might be nice to remember that now, 20 Dec, we are only 2 days away from the 'original winter feast' as celebrated for 100s of years before 'Xmas' hijacked it and moved it 2-3 days forward. Winter solstice, on 22nd Dec, was always the thing before our modern Xmas. Then people used to eat well, drink too much, give little gifts, kiss under a mistletoe, go around singing songs to ward off evil spirits, decorate houses with branches and worship a dressed winter man. Sounds familiar, as those 'pagan' rites have survived till today in the form of 'Xmas'. Btw., Grusse aus Finnland mit viel Schnee heute und Tschussi. Frohe Weihnachten / Season's Greetings!

The reason it is a Christmas movie is because of the themes. Family, friendship, redemption, reconciliation, love. It is presented in an unorthodox format, true, but those ARE the themes of the traditional Christmas movie as we understand it.
Everything John does, he does to save his wife. Because he just wants to reconcile with her and spend Christmas with her and the children. He's a reluctant hero drawn into a disaster, but he rises to the occasion because everything he loves is at stake.
Powell has a wife of his own to get home to, pregnant with their first child. He seems to have it good for the most part. But he has demons in his past. He hasn't been the same as a man or an officer ever since he shot that kid. He needs to learn that he can be forgiven and still be a good man despite his mistakes.
These are all textbook Christmas themes. They don't have to be just in Christmas films, but they fit squarely in with the traditional meaning of the season. That God came to earth in human form as a sign of good will and love to all humanity. Because he wanted to reconcile with us and forgive us for our sins and mistakes.
That's my essay. Whether you're convinced or not, I certainly believe that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. As much a Christmas movie as Home Alone!
