  • The A-Z of Wine is taking a look at VIOGNIER
    Viognier is a white wine grape variety. It is the only permitted grape for the French wine Condrieu in the Rhône Valley. Outside of the Rhône, Viognier can be found in regions of North and South America as well as Australia, New Zealand, the Cape Winelands in South Africa and Israel. In some wine regions, the variety is co-fermented with the red wine grape Syrah where it can contribute to the colour and bouquet of the wine.
    Like Chardonnay, Viognier has the potential to produce full-bodied wines with a lush, soft character.

    Hi everyone. Thoughts on Viognier. Is it in your wine rack?

    Excellent video! I first discovered Viognier over 20 years ago, when I asked a wine seller for a recommendation and he pointed it out to me. I had been invited to dinner by some serious gourmet friends and was asked to pick a wine to accompany the meal they'd planned (I've since forgotten what it was, but I had thought some sort of dry red was called for). The Viognier (from Vichon, now unavailable) was a revelation! It was a perfect accompaniment to the meal, and Viognier has remained a favorite ever since!

    Pretty stunning examples of Viognier here in Hawkes Bay NZ, really lush, round, can be really high in alc, but we also produce some leaner examples if harvested earier. 2019 and 2020 being warmer years so richer bigger examples. First time was actually in Marlborough, lots of apricot and peach and yummy custard spice. Lots of potential down here in NZ. Great post mate 👍

      Thanks for the comment. NZ Viognier isn't something I've seen much locally, so may have to go on an internet hunt. Cheers

    This grape has quickly become one that I recommend to friends who are tired of the usual round of whites. Easy drinking, and you get to sound fancy when you say vee-og-nee-rer. ;-)_

    Great video. I had Viognier over the years but while perfectly pleasant it’s never been ‘wine to write poetry about’. But then on our WSET 3 course they did a tasting of a AOC Condrieu (North Rhône) - wow Viognier with definition and elegance (not cheap though!).

      @TheGrapeExplorer  Před 4 lety

      Yes Condrieu probably the priciest of the Viogniers out there. Thanks for watching.

    i love Viognier. I often associate Viognier with sense of honeysuckle. Is honeysuckle common?

    • @TheGrapeExplorer

      I think it has this floral richness about it so yeah I definitely agree with that.

    I have had 1 bottle of it and I still preferred NZ SB. Maybe because although similar it may not be acidic enough. Thanks for your channel. Its great. I picked grapes ( for Gusbourne) last year and have been teaching myself about wine, with your help! I do have a bottle of the very same wine there chilling in my fridge, but a different vintage. Will enjoy comparing the flavours to your description.

    Only really discovered viognier as a single varietal last year, but it made an immediate impression and has been top of my list ever since. Currently have a bottle from Baron de Badassière that I'm looking forward to opening over the weekend.
    Enjoyed your video :)

    It's a good wine. I would put it in the middle of my white wines, in ranking. Great to try. Mine was from southern France (NW of Marseilles).
