    Steel wool in an old film canister. Punch a hole big enough for the needle. The steel wool cleans the gunk & sharpens the point of the needle.

      Marlon Rampy sometimes burning off the needle works also

      Ken Musil indeed...putting a flame to your brass dubbing brushes cleans out the old compacted dubbing. Fire is a good thing!!

      All great options, I will say this is easier and gives multiple options in sizes

      Can't beat steel wool. I've been using the same large sewing needle glued into the center of a cork since the 70's. Always good as new with steel wool.

    I just recently learned there was sush a thing as a pin vise.
    Cool tool. Nice tying table
    I clean my bodkin with 320 grit sandpaper in 30 seconds.

      Thanks, yeah I like the table for sure! As for the bodkin, yeah I try to clean mine also, however still it doesn’t always come up as easily even with sand paper. I like how easy and quick it is to switch out needles and I can have fine or heavy ones also. But yeah I use both for sure.

    Here’s another tip that may be of interest, I take a small pill vial and fill it with steel wool. I put a hole in the top cap so that I can slide the Botkin into it. You move the Boykin in and out a few times and the Botkin is clean! I use the Botkin for all the same things that most Fly Tiers do, head cement, UV Resins, wax etc. My Botkin remain clean and ready for the next application. The Pin Vise is nice when you require a thicker handle. I make my own tools and handles in my wood shop with my Woodturning Vise where I can make my handles any size I want. You didn’t say what that gray substance is that you use to clean your Botkin. Try the steel wool. Best regards, Richard

      Yes, I’ve done that, and it still doesn’t come out perfect

    In that pack the larger needles are great for making extended mayfly bodies with silicone and dubbing.
    Great multi use idea though- for $15 bucks you have years and years of bodkins - thanks for sharing!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 4 lety

      Yeah man! Heck, it’s only $7.99!! The needles can be bought for $1 or less at your grocery store

    I have the same setup but I use a plier for cleaning the gunk. Pin the gunk with the tooth, spin it a few time and pull it out. Seems to work fine with a bit of muscle 😅.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před rokem

      Nice! Yeah I like this pin vise, still use it. And I do clean the needles occasionally but I find there are times it doesn’t want to come off too well and needles are cheap so, I will trade out often as well.

    I never thought of that; but I do use my wife's large-head sewing pins as botkins for as long as I can remember.

    You can use an exacto knife or hobby knife handle too, same idea and they have them at home depot for $3.57 with blades. I keep a bunch of them on my tying desk with different size needles and 1 with a blade in it.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 4 lety +1

      Sure, but it still won’t come out perfect. And that takes a while. What I like about this is it’s quick, and allows for different lengths and widths of needles

    • @georgeglantzis6707
      @georgeglantzis6707 Před 4 lety

      Not sure what you mean it won't come out perfect and that it takes a while? They fit any size needle I've found securely without cutting any eyes off and takes me maybe 30 seconds to change one. What matters is whatever works for you just giving another option cause just like you I hated buying a new bodkin or 2 every couple weeks. That said I enjoy the channel keep them coming, hope you had a happy holiday season and happy new year, cheers!!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 4 lety

      I’m sorry I misunderstood whatcha meant. I thought you meant use the exacto knife to shave off the goop on the bodkin. Haha! Sorry! I read it too quickly. Yes for sure, that’s a great option, and close to the same idea.
      My holidays were good, yours?

    Fine grit sandpaper will work, just clean after every tying session.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 4 lety

      For sure, don’t always do it though. Also it’s extra steps. Needles cost almost nothing, kinda nice to just replace which takes only a few seconds. Heck, use the sandpaper on the needle and keep that going for a while and replace when you want. I just like the versatility of this. But hey that’s just me

  • @phaselight
    @phaselight Před 4 lety

    Something I found that has helped is using a high grit sand paper. Also, if you have access to it, you can use blunt tip syringes. They have caps so you can use one for a long time

    Hi from Bonnie Scotland ,I use an engineers Pin Vise to hold my needle, it’s thin but has some weight to it.I first used it to tie my River Clyde flees 50 odd years ago as the jaws extend just enough to hold a small hook,rear end is threaded so a friend tapped a cleaned welding rod to fit and a block of brass as a base drilled to fit the rod and drilled at side , tapped for a Wingnut.Mums sewing threads and any feathers I could find and a Wooden Clothes Peg to hold the thread +a few half hitches. I clean pin with tissues then if cement builds up I rub the pin on the Knurled knob on my Dyna-King vices clamp.Please keep the vids coming,Happy and Prosperous New Year to you and yours,Cheers.

      It allows you to get different size and thicknesses. And I’ll tell ya I’ve got some bodkins that are so gunked up it’s hard to get the stuff off. But if you don’t see a need for one don’t worry
