- Defunct Games reviews Baja: Edge of Control HD by THQ Nordic, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
If you're a long-time fan of Baja: Edge of Control, then go, let the nostalgia bask over you as you race through more than a thousand miles of rough terrain. But for pretty much everybody else, Baja: Edge of Control HD feels more like an outdated relic from the past than a must-own racing game. It's not bad, but the off-road genre has seen a lot of progress in the past nine years. This one is only for the die-hard fans.

I actually think this game is pretty damn good
It defnitely is but it's the type of game that isn't perhaps as immediate as people want. Most people aren't prepared to play it long enough to know truly if theyd like it or not. Took me ages before I really started getting into it and I'm glad I didn't write it off
This game is awesome! Absolutely baffled at the negative reactions. Give it chance. White knuckles racing, you are really on the edge of control! Never crashed on me even once, super smooth 60 fps. check your computer bro
a tip for ya. Use the clutch at the start of the race to effectively turbo from the revs being so high. Clutch use also extends to moments where your vehicle is forced into a slow situation ie hitting into another vehicle and you need to ramp the revs back up so you bite back into the track. Even in a slow air time you can force your revs up so that when you land you're then catapulted forward at a greater speed. Clutch use is evertything in this game . Most people that play this wont even realise this aspect though as it's badly explained to begin with. Most people form their opinion with only a little time with this game but it's one that improves as your understanding of the nuances improves
Excellent game
Dam dude i literally got some nostalgia cause when i was a little kid i freaking loved that game man, i literally forgot about it man,im just heart warmed by this, and i just bought the game again and im loving it after not playing this game for YEARS
So you say there are over a dozen racing games similar to Baja EoC that you would recommend over Baja, would you care to list any? In my personal opinion, I have never experienced any racing game similar to Baja in really any sense. For instance, I honestly cannot think of any other game new or old that brings the Baja 1000 to a game like Baja EoC had. Albeit its not a perfect game in any sense but the originality of the game alone would sell me.
I agree.. Which games?? There's nothing like it. Sadly.
@Stormer248 Do you know any good freeroam offroading games? My friend had a birthday party with a great one but I cant find or it or think of the name off the op of my head. I know it had dirt bikes, atvs, and dune buggys. Any chance you could help?
@Stormer248 it was on an xbox one, I've been trying to find it for a while
@@lego8637 it was most probably FUEL game
he said racing games not baja or off road games
My #2 racing game of all time!
I might actually give this one a shot. The Baja events were always my favorite across the Dirt series, I just wished the tracks were bigger and the handling less forgiving. This seems to offer just that, if only far less pretty and polished.
Question of the Day, tough choice, but I'll have to go for Motorstorm. There just aren't enough racing games that let you crush the competition in a freakin' monster truck. Never gets old.
You will not regret it, the physics still hold up (MIND THE THROTTLE IN FAST VEHICLES) and the Baja 1000 is 3 hours long and you won't see the same turn twice.
It's pure point-to-point bliss.
Can you upgrade the trucks ect
I played this game for the first time 2022, and honestly, I dont get the hate. It's a genuinely fun game, the parts wear is a really neat gimmick, the difficulty curve is a good way to keep a masochist engaged, the physics are fun, and I live seeing the body panels flex and slop around, something I havent seen in ANY other game. It feels like MXvsATX Unleashed with baja vehicles instead of helicopters and dirt bikes, but with maps that remind me of a more extreme version of smugglers run. It runs pretty stable on ps4 (now ps5 too) the only issues I have with it are the stock vw beetle engine sounds they gave the service helicopter, and the inevitable crash everytime I get about 67% through the Baja 1000 event (after an nearly 2 hours of sweating) but otherwise, it genuinely feels like a healthy mix of all the arcade off road racers from the ps2 era, but with a simulated twist, and a small, but fantastic sound track (though it does get repetitive. I love Rise Against, but I can only listen to Drones so many times). I got it on sale for $6, and if you can find it for that, its absolutely worth $6. Anything over $10 is a little steep though.
Wonder if they can make any money on this. The reason for this Port (not remaster) is Nordic buying all the THQ IP's on the cheap
What was the game u showed with the guy with the gun on the train in the beginning
It's one of the games in the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection compilation on PlayStation 4. I believe it's Uncharted 2.
I enjoy outdated arcade racers. I’ll buy this. It’s on sale right now
Bah, darn new YT design! You kind of disappeard from the front page for me lol. But all good and set up again now :)
First off, you kinda broke my heart at 0:15 ..... :'(
Second, uh, no, the game looks boring to be honest. Probly gonna stick to Gas Guzzlers Extreme. While there's less off road, it still seems to be more fun than this. Then again, car combat always is/was fun! :D
Gotta try "Pure" tho! I always thought that was that boring, booooooring off road game but I think I mixed that up with "Fuel" for all those years lol.
Thanks for the review and tell your allergy to gtfo! All the best :) o/
Can you play 2 player in this?
Yes. The game supports up to four-player split-screen play.
Herbert Cunanan I used to own this game. Back in the old version. There is a spit screen feature.
Not recommended to play on PS5 as it has a lot of UI graphical glitches that will make you feel real motion sickness. Better to play it on an actual PS4 as intended. Still glitched but on a much more manageable level.
I bought the game over dirt 5 on sale for $7
@ $ 6 it's very good! 😁😉
Mario kart Wii or NFS Undercover
Too bad this is the only game of its kind. Which makes it rare. Desert racing is hardcore and much Under rated. Most dedicated drivers out there
More arcade like... count me in!
Did you recently change your channel's name?
Defunct Games I did. Sorry for the confusion.
Just caught me off guard. Must have been recently, because I usually spend most of my days refreshing your page waiting for something to change. This just in: I'm a bit of a stalker.
Defunct Games lol this game reminds me of like a better version of midways off-road challenge on n64. Thus why I'm checking it out. Weird I know.
I was willing to give this game a try given the small price tag, but the mention of repeating the same race dozens of times brings back painful memories of Trackmania on PS4, and I'm never going through this crap again! It became so difficult about halfway through the campaign, I could spend nearly an hour on a single race! It was then that I finally understood what "mind-numbing" meant, and immediately sold the game in the process. Well, I have a copy of Redout waiting for me so I hope it will finally be the first PS4 arcade racer that I won't have to sell. Haven't played much else to be honest, NFS-whatever and Flatout 4, but so far they've all been hugely disappointing (or downright garbage, like NFS).
Baja is the sort of game that rewards massively but only if you enjoy satisfaction gained from learning how best to play it. I think Redout would be more accessable for your taste
My favorite racing game from 2008 would have to be Burnout Paradise. Admittedly, I did not play a lot of racing games that came out in that year.
I used to be a tester on the original game. The selling point for Baja was the fact that it was an off-road game that was modeled after real life environments, something that most other off-road games didn't have. I know it had its own dedicated following from fans of the actual Baja race.
That's great information, Travis. Now that you mention it, I can see the appeal of having large environments modeled off of real life locations. Perhaps that was mentioned more in the marketing at the time, but the game didn't do much to clue me in on this, which is a shame. I'm looking at it a little differently based on this new information.
I'll admit to scratching my head wondering why they chose this game to remaster. It didn't seem to sell all that well, but I can see how a dedicated fan-base could be loud and active about getting a new version. I'm glad the fans will get the definitive version (after they hammer out the bugs).
I would imagine that the best reason to remaster this is that it was cost effective. That and THQ Nordic is trying to reestablish old THQ brands.
game is garbage
only racing game of 2008 was NFS:undercover and it was not memorable at all.
like baja
Haha good review and i got nostalgia from that top gear 3000 snes music :D
