    Hey Everyone,
    In this video, I will talk to you about my absolute favorite pair of tap shoes I have ever owned. After many years and many brands of tap shoes, I have recently come to realize that the very best pair for my personal feet are the Miller & Ben SporTaps.
    If you decide to order them, tell them you heard about the shoes from me, and they will throw in a free tap shoe repair kit worth $28. The price of the shoes is somewhere in the $200's depending on colors and sizes. You can find them at... www.tapemporium.com
    Enjoy!

    this goat leather tip may be a deal breaker for me! I have a terrible time breaking Miller and Bens in! thanks!!! Realize this is old, but went looking for this video after your class just now :)

      Also, lighter colors tend to be easier to break in than dark ones, just FYI.

    I was lucky to find them in my size in stock, so it arrived fast. I mentioned about you and they did, in fact, send the repair kit! I'm still in the break in process, so I can't fully comment on them. Thanks for the video!

      +Cristina Hirayama Definitely curious what you end up thinking of them! You'll have to show them to me this week before you leave NY!

    Hi Shelby... as an adult intermediate with zero previous advice before I began tap in my late 20's (and am now late 40s!), I am looking for advice as to what shoes may be best to help me improve my tap sounds and also making sounds on time. The only ones I have ever had were the 2" heel mary jane Capezio with rubber applied to ball and taps installed after. No particular trouble with them except screws got stripped keeping them looser so had to apply rubber cement after a bit. That said I always felt they were rigid and I had difficulty making loud enough sounds and also making them on time, and felt that this may have been because of the stiff leather sole - just feeling my feet in the various dance shoes I've been in my whole life. I know split soles are not recommended generally speaking, but I just wonder if, as a lifelong Ukrianian dancer, classical ballet (en pointe,) jazz and modern dancer (and figure skater) before tap whether the split sole may allow my foot to be more flexible and better control my taps. I am not planning any crazy toe stands or wings anytime soon; I just want clearer taps and on time (which the latter is also partly practice, but as I started as a beginner in recreational tap, little technical advice was given - and didn't want to be in a class with 13 year olds - no shade to my teacher whom I love! That's just not how that adult rec class was structured). Anyhoo I am kind of wanting to get back into tap and improve on my own, so wondered with my dance history whether the Capezio split sole may suit my particular goals as an intermediate, or whether I should just go back with a leather sole oxford for health and safety. Like am I likely to slip, fall or sprain my ankle doing basics like maxi fords, time steps, paradiddles, pick up shuffles or any sort of turns? Doesn't seem likely to me but who knows, as right now I am a tad overweight and out of shape, and perhaps some others here may have some suggestions. Sorry for the long message, I am taking lots away from your videos all the way to here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada! Thank-you Shelby for reading, any and all suggestions, advice and or recommendations are welcome and appreciated!!! :)

      I would never recommend a split sole shoe because they do not have the support needed for safely and efficiently tap dancing. That said, there are many options for you so it really depends on your price range for this.

    Thanks for doing these review videos. It's so hard to get good reviews when it comes to Tap shoes and you've definitely helped me make up my mind for what pair of shoes I want to invest in in the future. I have a suggestion for future reviews. Where I live there's a very limited supply of choices when it comes to picking out tap shoes, at least if you want to get them locally. This means that as a tap teacher, I have students constantly coming up to me, especially beginners who are about to buy their first pair of shoes, asking where and which shoes they should get. I usually recommend to purchase online, since the local offering tends to be... lacking, but this is a tough question for me to answer specifically. Mostly because it's been so long since I went for more budget-friendly models of shoes and the quality of those has changed so much. My recommendation for you is this, could you maybe do reviews on the brands/models/special qualities of shoes that you recommend for your students (again, particularly beginners). And since beginners are usually on a budget, maybe you could address those that are available within the realm of $100? Thank you so much for even considering this request. Love, love, love your videos! Please keep this up! :)

    I absolutely love your videos! I was wondering if I could ask you a question. As a tap dancer and teacher, do you think it is better to wear full sole tap shoes or split sole? Thanks!

    • @shelbykaufman
      @shelbykaufman  Před 3 lety

      100 percent full sole! I would NEVER recommend split sole tap shoes to anyone ever. Hope that helps!

    hi, i just wanted to say i love your videos!!
    i mean you"re very friendly, clear at explaining and you have a voice that's nice to listen to!
    i do have one question ( since i am a beginner) what does breaking the shoes in mean?
    does it mean that the wood at the bottom is getting more flexible or something?
    i'm from a coutry where we don't speak english so " breaking" sounds like you're destroying your shoe!!😂😂
    lots of love and greetz from the netherlands

    • @shelbykaufman
      @shelbykaufman  Před 8 lety

      +Dani Van Velthoven When we get our shoes, especially professional ones, the leather is hard, and the soles are hard, so we need to work to get the shoes molded to our feet and more flexible. The process of doing that, though, hurts our feet, so most people wear new tap shoes only a little bit at a time until they are able to be danced in for longer without pain.

    Would you mind telling me how the sizes compare to your Jason Samuels? I want to get a pair of the Sports Taps, but live in MS so will be ordering online & want the sizing to be accurate.

      +Jennifer Rhodes Wood I believe I have 7.5's in the J Sams and 38's in Miller and Bens. I was told I should be a 37.5 but my heels feel a little snug so I ordered up and put my arch supports in them. Honestly they are still slightly big, but it bothers me more when tap shoes are too small and push on my toes.

    Hi Shelby, have you ever tried JustTap or Ruben Sanchez shoes? I'm looking at buying another pair of shoes and I have the Tap Masters Ben and Millers for 5 years that are fully worn in but still give me blisters. I haven't met anyone with the Justtap or Ruben Sanchez shoes...

    • @shelbykaufman
      @shelbykaufman  Před 6 lety

      I have tried them on, but never bought them. They are not a great shoe in my opinion (an opinion shared by many tap dancers around the world who have written articles about them, etc.) There are so many better choices to try from multiple brands.

      @shelbykaufman  Před 8 lety

      +Angel Cavanaugh I'm not actually sure if there is a place on the online order form to mention that... I usually call to order my shoes. Also, I am not sure if they are still doing the free kits or not, but you should definitely at least ask.

  • @kathrynhoke4830

    How do you recommend we order from Miller and Ben?
    Their website layout looks like it was created by the same people who made the craigslist website; it feels sketchy to order over their website.
    Should we call? I live in Alaska, so I can’t make it into their shop.
    My right foot is a half size bigger than my left. I heard that you can trace your feet and send them that. Is that true?
    Is the deal on the repair kit still available?
    Thank you in advance!

    • @shelbykaufman
      @shelbykaufman  Před 5 lety
