"Kiko is almost like mother courage. It's to invoke power within people, the subtle and profound gentle power that can be provoked within music to empower people and give them their strength back." -Lisa Gerrard
You could spend a lifetime and maybe still not hear everything they've done there's such a volume of musical works. I've followed them since 88-89 and still manage to find new works and new versions of old songs on youtube. They could literally have there own xm channel.
@@deadreckoner5276 Lisa Gerrard is singing in her own language. This process is called "glossolalia" (Greek word actually) :) She always sings from her soul.
Greek 'aromas' are everywhere in this song! The 9/8 Zeimbekiko rhythm, the bouzouki instrument! Been Greek and a big fun on Dead Can Dance, I really enjoy this!
This is probably my favourite DCD track of all time. From the rhythm to all the elements, instruments. The break after the extended bridge at 5:24 always gets me to tears when the strings come in. It's like sinking into a warm bath that is most likely akin to getting back into the womb where all is right on an existential level. Followed by a magnificent solo that soothes the worst traumas.
This 9/8 rhythm and especially the instrumental part after 5.24 is very similar in sound and melody to greek dance/rhythm of zeibekiko! (the title perhaps comes from that...). A masterpiece! (like many others form DCD...)
For me it's the best song from DCD. What a goosepumps. My dream, someday, will be to stay at Cliffs of Moher, in a cloud weather and listenig this song. How I desire it!!!!
Magnificence personified.... This sound can not be exhausted.. It will never get old ... Come to my funeral approx 2050 and enjoy this tune one more time.
The beat of this song is based on the Greek “zeimbekiko” a very popular music genre in Greece with “bouzouki” as the lead organ. Here is played at a slower tempo, hence the name of the song zeimbe - kiko -.
bouzouki is the Irish Mandolin. it's just like the little baby verson with a full elongated neck. Glad you understand and appreciate it's Beauty fine Lass!
Beautiful melody, have seen them live twice, once in Thessaloniki and once in Herodium Theatre in Athens. Truly magical. Bouzouki here used is similar to many greek traditional music pieces.
I have always loved DCD, everything they have done is amazing. And will be an inspiration for generations to come. Kiko is such a haunting melody it carries me away to an ancient desert in an ancient landscape. so power
*** SUPER FANTASTICO!!! *** 53 years young here. Friend of mine introduced me to them in the 80's & have ♡♡♡ them ever since till this day & the day & FORVER !
sweet Turkish traditional music vibes, they have this very relaxed, slow burn rhythm. So thankful for Xavier, that song made me learn to play instruments, and this journey into the world of sounds and melodies through the years still feels like thousands of orgasms
when Lisa Garret decided to stop with the band i was so upset,i was so worried that Brendan might not do any more music ,i was so impressed with his ark ,i never imagined his voice was so wonderful and beautiful ,as a rather held the lime light before .well so she should her voice is wonderful as well i do love all there stuff .been with me all my life and i am so thankful for them .made my life a billion times better xxxxxx

Welcome to the journey.
O qué suerte tienes por descubrirlo! You are lucky men!! DCD is a world of beauty music.
Better late than never. Enjoy!
It's a beautiful, mesmeric journey!
DCD never fails to transport into another, almost chthonian realm, traversing various otherworldly landscapes. True magic.

Beautiful, the way you said that
Wow baby, you are so intuitive
Completely agreed

For anyone wondering, this is zeibekiko rhythm. Very common in older Greek and Turkish music.
Do you know what language it is?
@@deadreckoner5276 Lisa Gerrard is singing in her own language. This process is called "glossolalia" (Greek word actually) :)
She always sings from her soul.
Kiko from the Greek word ''Zeibekiko'' which is the 9/8 traditional dance .A masterpiece of a song .

Truly a remarkable piece, love the bouzouki that Brendan plays very well, it gives a very Greek feel to the piece, can't stop listening to it either!
I think it's sounds more like a Morocco night, out in the desert, clear sky and a soft cold wind..
So good I threw plates!
Arabic you mean...its sounds middle eastern imo..
@@diecast4556 Actually it combines both Anatolian and Greek music. Possibly a way to search for the connecting point between them
Of course it does, this is zeibekiko rhythm, which is very common in older greek and turkish music :)
A fantastic creation from Dead Can Dance. Both Brendan and Lisa have amazing vocal talent. I would love to see them live one day.

May the creator bless all Greeks what a fabulous ancient people they are
Havent figured out yet if zeimbekiko is a dance of submission or pride. (It is danced with the head hanging down). Turkey and Greece
PEACE!
divine beauty 🔱 thank you so much dead can dance
As another user pointed, the bouzoki, specially by the end of the song... it's so beautiful, can make one cry

I saw them performing it live and it was first time I heard "Kiko". Bouzouki solo (starts around 5:30) made me shiver.
