  • Orangeburg piping first started being installed in the late 1800s. It is a composite material combined of old wood chippings and tar. It is said to last 50 years, but odds are you're only going to get 30 years out of it. The problem with these pipes is that they are soft, they compress, and they also get holes in them. This can lead to clogs down the line.
