  • In this episode Naomi & Kyle will show us their self-built school bus. Without any previous experience, they decided to jump in this journey and build their own tiny house on wheels. It took them two years to build it and today they are travelling in their beautiful skoolie, making lots of memories on the road. They will share the story of how they ended up choosing this lifestyle and more about the building process.

Out of all the bus conversion videos I have watched, I have learned more from you straight forward tape. Your no nonsense advice is invaluable. I purchased a 2005 Ford mini bus last July. I've only taken out the seats. I can't tell you how hard that process was... I was stubborn. I wanted to do it all by myself. Finally, I let my son help me. Now, my bus is parked at my home. Other than placing things inside and having diagnostic test on the engine,, I have not been doing anything because of the weather. You touched on things I did not know such as placing the outlets upside down.
The engine is in good condition. I plan to have all the electrical, plumbing, cabinetry done professionally.
I am going to watch your video again. I do have questions I want to ask you, later.
Little something about me. February 12, I will be turning 71. I am a veteran and have worked in education. I am tired of my lonely, depressed life, so I need to make a change. I will try to get in touch. Thank you for your informative video. Carol

I love it. Absolutely nothing wrong with going with the "Engine of the Economy" option for your bus build. You don't need to kill yourself trying to build a bus in 3 months or kill your dream by taking 3 years to build your bus. Earn the money and then hire experts to do what you want and get the bus done right the first time and then hit the road.
Just make sure you get really good instruction manuals so you can run/repair things if needed down the road. Especially if you're out in the wilderness.

nicely done. However i am surprised you eliminated so many windows, thus removing all the natural light. That is one of the beautiful things of bus builds is all the windows and natural light that comes in and the fantastic views of your surroundings.

    • @AlternativeHouse
      @AlternativeHouse  Před 2 lety +33

That's true. But on the other side, you need so many blinders and curtains. And in summer it gets super hot and in winter cold just because you have so many windows. That being said, you always have to choose between comfort and aesthetics. :)

Kyle: At about 42:48 minutes into the video you make a comment that before being financially responsible for others (I’m guessing you’re saying, “before you have kids”) you two want to get out while you can and travel the country. Well…, I’m with you on that idea. I wish we’d done it that way.
For us, almost 60 years later our kids are all grown, out of school with multiple degrees, and live all over the country.
We’ve got lots of grandkids. We’re both retired and financially in good shape. And our bodies are literally, physically breaking down. We’re both too worn out to travel.
We once looked forward to our “golden years“ as a time when we could travel all over and see this, or see that. But now all we see are the insides of doctors offices and hospitals - anew new shoulder here, a new hip there. That’s our life.
The best thing I can say to you is “Do it now. See what you want to see.“ Because when you’re our ages maybe, like us today, you physically can’t do it.
    Good for you!!!

You have a beautiful conversion...I just wanted to add that insurance is a fantastic investment bc I've seen videos of both fires and weather damage and it's sickening how fast all that you've put in it is lost...like 15 minutes and that's all it took for something that cost multiple of thousands to become absolutely worthless. And that's for ones you just buy. For something you put your time and labor into... I've seen that some people have something called 'fireballs' they hang near anything electric. That is definitely on my 'gotta have' list. 🤗

I have lived in campers chasing turnarounds my entire childhood & as an adult 1984-2019. I knew exactly what storage solutions & rooms/spaces that were the most important to me. I am surprised by all the storage solutions you chose to give up! I know how hot windows can be and anything over 35+ feet needs two roof airs. ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO, WEST TEXAS 110-118 Summers are NO JOKE. The air NEVER stops even with reflectix. Anyhow you guys gave up a ton of windows, it feels like a single wide trailer or a conex inside without the windows! You should have put a long skiny backslash window (even non-functional) would open up that area DRASTICALLY. Why such small overhead cabinets? If you actually looked at how little of stuff you guys have inside I bet a bus half that size would have worked and saved a ton on gas & oil changes alone.

Awesome tour! Very informative in a chill, relaxed way. I'm interested in your build, it's clever and Beautiful at the same time! If affordable I would have an electrician do my solar work on bus. Thank You for Sharing your bus and greatly appreciated!

Great job! We have just begun our skoolie build. Its stripped and the roof is raised. We also plan to live on our skoolie.

Your bus looks like a lot of 1 bd. Apt. In nyc. Would cost 1,800 -2,200 month!!!

Love the home! Only thing I would be worried about is visiting cold places. propaine gels when it gets cold enough. Also makes it easier for ignorant people to steal you're tanks. I hope that never happens. The home is Amazing!! Thank you for the tour.

I would have put more windows in so you had more natural light. Heck of a raise roof. Love the ceiling.

Beautiful build and as an RV tech you have almost everything right. Almost because the one mistake that you made and this is not my opinion it is because of my experiance and many people I know . Alstate is the one thing you did wrong. God forbid you do not have a major accident or a fire because Alstate will in the end pay out a fraction of what they claim.. Be safe
