  • Rishi Sunak wants all kids to learn maths until the age of 18 and stop it being socially acceptable to be bad at maths.
    Maybe he should start closer to home...

      It's a tired old cliche: a politician claiming the UK is falling behind because not enough of its children are doing maths or STEM subjects. The real reason the UK is falling behind is because people like Sunak run it - and in particular, run it into the ground. Compare the UK's R&D expenditure to countries like Germany, South Korea, Japan and the US and you begin to see where the problems start. Then look at the serial under-funding of public services, including schools, which means it is impossible to churn out skilled workers even if you overhaul things like national curricula. The fact of the matter is this: the Tories do not want a high-wage, world-leading economy because they run or represent businesses that require low investment and low skills. They are incapable of competing on a world stage, which is precisely why Brexit happened and precisely why they are diverting everyone's attention from their shambolic handling of the economy to illegal immigration.

As a proportion of the UK population (circa 68m) 45k is 0.066%, This means that if all 45k (the per annum figure) were given asylum and then the same proportion came to watch a game there'd be, rounding up, 10,007 After 10 years there'd be 10,070 fans. It'd literally take a life time to fill the last 500 places at this rate.

    A country of 65 million people can easily absorb what is in reality a very small number of refugees. Its not like they'll be heading for the dole office. I'd imagine people that have gone through so much to get here would embrace the opportunity in much the same way her parents did. Probably more so because they haven't had the advantage of a more welcoming society her parents enjoyed, unlike the one she advocates...

    • @McHab
      @McHab Před rokem +2

      Correct - those are small numbers compared to other countries. In 2022 even a small country like Austria had more asylum applications than the UK: 102.000 ( 2022), Spain had 109.000, France 141.000 , Germany 215.000 -( and those numbers do not include ukranian refugees). And the stats for the last 10 years show even a much higher difference. A document about Asylum statistics (House of Commons Library) states : "In 2021, there were around 9 asylum applications for every 10,000 people living in the UK. Across the EU27 there were 14 asylum applications for every 10,000 people. The UK was therefore below the average among EU countries for asylum applications per head of population, ranking 16th among EU27 countries plus the UK on this measure." Of course its not easy to deal with refugees, but I'm sure that Suellas intention is just to find scapegoats and distract from real issues.

    The UK has 1.6 trillion pounds of national debt. In figures that is 1600000000000 pounds. It is such an impossible figure to comprehend, that an easier way to understand it is to say that it is one million x one million x 1.6. The interest racks up at the rate of 42 pounds per second and the government can barely manage just to repay the interest. In layman's terms, every UK resident owes 25000 pounds... factor in personal debt (credit cards, mortgages) and it becomes 75000 pounds. Bankrupt Britain is surely the legacy of government that is appallingly bad at maths. You cannot run an economy be exporting nothing, importing everything you need and borrowing other countries' money to pay for it all. That is unsustainable and demonstrates not just bad maths but appalling crass stupidity!
