    This is beautifully made. I would offer a few refinements. The falcon perch itself would be better made in a half moon so that if the bird bates to the opposite side of where the leash runs, the leash will slide off the perch and not go over the top with the possibility of hanging the bird up. The back needs to be made so that there is no possibility of getting falcon's primaries behind it between it and the wall. Lastly, the use of astroturf is hard to clean... after going through almost every substrate over the last 50 years, the best solution for me is boat-deck material. Mutes are easily wiped up avoiding any chance of old poop on astroturf. I use carpet padding underneath and you can even build in a slight grade so that poop runs back toward the cat litter. This is a beautiful perch. Thanks for the video. R

      Good points. Rounded edges are always superior to sharp and hard angles for bird applications. The turf could also be secured with velcro on all surfaces for regular removal and cleaning. I like the mute container, but a safer design would have mesh or hardware cloth across the opening to prevent a falcon from landing or falling into the hole. (In that case, the leash is secured under the shelf and above the screen mat) The health and safety of the falcon should always be the primary consideration in all designs and fabrications. Excellent workmanship here but not all in the best interest of the bird.

    Clever idea fella. Now I know I came to the right place. What I would like to do is make pruches outside my house for small birds, finches, nuthatches and such. I would like to put them high on my house which is about twenty feet high. My house is a single floor level domain. Reason is the birds make mud strew nests on top of my outside floodlighting which in number is 6 total. For whatever reason the birds prefer open nests. When the bulbs burn out we try to paste them on the new bulbs with success. When the birds come back without a nest it takes them a while making new nests. Something flat would work but I do not know what would work best.
    Thanks Falconry Told.

    a lot of peregrines nearly slice compared to desert falcons or hybrids - so the height of the perch relative to the platform and size of the cut out are hard to get right sometimes. I have found the height of the perch, the diameter of the cut-out at the sides, and the width of the platform at the sides is the most important measurement to maintain a clean platform from mutes. As the bird almost always sits sideways (especially for peregrines). I would stress re-designing the mute catch system with a more robust channeled blocks that firmly hold the plastic tray in snugly...as you know, if the tub got knocked out it could be catastrophic. I agree with the comment below - to use a half-moon type shape for the perch to avoid hang-ups. Can be deeper than a true half circle but contoured. Nice work!

    Such a Great video. One of the best tierces peregrines that I ever flew was a hacked tiercel from Ralph. When Ralph told me it was time to come get him he was on a shelf perch in Melissa’s kitchen just like the one he described. The Vinyl Nagahide landing surface was soft and easily cleaned. The shelf was an elipse covered with plastic door matting. I wish i had built mine like his sooner because being the bouncy tiercel that he was when we got back to Texas his bating on the indoor outdoor green astroturf landing pad wore down his primary tips. Quickly the design was changed to the one Ralph describes and that is what has worked well over the years. Bruce Haak and Dean Keddy Hector use this design as well. It’s super easy to clean and cant hurt any feathers. The carpet padding can be purchased at Home Depot and the vinyl can be bought at fabric stores. Thanks Ralph. Truly cannot thank you enough. Izzy, your videos teach and inspire. Please never quit!!

    Ralph and John have made some good suggestions on design improvements. However, I'd certainly be interested in recommended dimensions for larger falcons, particularly with regards to height of perch in relation to level of and diameter of the cut away platform the bird bates onto. My experience is that a falcon such as a female peregrine/male hybrid with a good crop will still shoot a mute out rather than direct drop. Obviously in the interest of hygiene it's important that the mutes reach the litter tray instead of edges of the platform but sometimes the diameter of the cut away can be too big unless the perch is lowered ...which in turn makes it less attractive as a roosting perch.
    FYI i would avoid the screw in leash securing ring. It's out of sight and often out of mind under the perch or in the wall beneath and I had one pull out once after some extended time. Could have been disastrous. Ever since I now bolt it with nut bolt and split washer and hide the nut in a recess under the top padding. Thanks for sharing the video.

    Are the measurements correct in your link? I tried to make this myself and it seems to be a huge perch. 56" across is over 4 1/2 feet and 3+feet deep. How do you even reach your bird to unleash or tether to the eyelet? I really want this for my home, but it seems way too big. I also have a Gyrfalcon so the bird is the same as your video.

    • @FalconryTold
      @FalconryTold  Před 5 lety +2

      No hang ups, no issues whatsoever. My bird is mostly gyr so it mutes straight down, but even with a Peregrine I wouldn’t go that much wide with the mute catcher dimensions. I would say it probably doesn’t need to extend out from the wall quite so far, because you’re tethering it to the side dimensions anyways, so at its furthest bate towards the front it has 8 inches or so of remaining real-estate before the edge... it could go in 4-5 inches. Though the bigger the perch the better, I’m at the edge of where any bigger and you wouldn’t be able to reach the leash knot from the front of the perch bending over. 4-5 inches less would make it much more comfortable to tether your bird from the front, rather than the sides. Also, note how the tether ring is at the landing perch level? That’s a must. Keep the leash tether point at level with the birds feet to prevent any tail damage, that aspect of my perch is also right on the money. Happy with it so far!

  • @christiansworldofwonder9059

    • @kenna6903
      @kenna6903 Před 2 lety

      Kestrels should be mostly inside birds due to weight management, predation and other factors. A set up similar to this ( much smaller of course) would work well. A good kestrel book would be 'American Kestrels in Modern Falconry' by Matthew Mullenix.

    • @FalconryTold
      @FalconryTold  Před 5 lety +1

      Good question, I've thought about that a bit myself and a bit of research reveals some decent solutions... Having multiple turf cutouts with velcro so that they can be removed/replaced and cleaned, but then you have to deal with the range past the edge of the perch... A clear shield of some sort or just an extended set of flooring covers that can be replaced/cleaned frequently as well... Having accipiters in the house is much more complicated.
