Xaoc Devices Batumi and Samara II | 10 LFO-based patch ideas

This is a video about creative uses for low-frequency oscillators, or LFOs. It's focused on the Xaoc Devices Batumi quad LFO, used here alongside the Samara II utility module.
Although Batumi has been around for nearly a decade now, it’s still one of the best options for anyone looking to add some powerful LFO-based modulation to a Eurorack system.
You can just use it as four very capable independent LFOs, and that’s probably what a lot of people end up doing. But if you dig a little deeper into the modes which link all four channels, and pair it with a mixing and utility module like the Samara II, you can do all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff with it - from generating more complex waveshapes right through to drum pattern triggers and polyphonic arpeggiation.
If you own one or both of them, I hope this video gives you some ideas for things to try, and even if you don’t own these specific units, quite a few of these techniques can be achieved with other modules.

Love my Batumi. Had it for close to a decade. Got a few fresh ideas from this video. I like using Batumi as a drum sequencer, such a versatile module, pairs really nice with a precision adder too. I agree, the expander is essential. Thanks, great informative video.
Great video with plenty of creative ideas. I loved the brilliant trick of +5V shifting three CVs by patching -5V to inverting inputs of Samara.

That phase modulation idea for drum triggers sounds great for creating wonky beats... you've got me trying to work out how I could do that myself with different gear!

Nice video! There surprisingly aren't too many video's out there on Batumi tutorials.
Relatively late to Eurorack (three years *gulp*) and even later to Xaoc- got my Zadar just a few months back. However, I’ve just secured a good deal on a Batumi and expander and really looking forward to to it- plus I think my Klavis Mixwitch can handle a lot of what Samara is doing here…

Really interesting. Can I check - for the poly arpeggiator -are you using three quantisers or is there some way of generating the quantised values with one and then using to drive the voices?
I'm using three quantisers (via three channels of the Quantermain app in Ornament and Crime)

Bought a Batumi and just assumed Samara II was the logical extension. Only thing I don't get... why is 'green' negative voltage? Love your video!!
Red=positive/hot is the industry standard and common sense
@@pe00000001 That is true but I was specifically calling out green - negative. Cause you know... green - ground is the industry standard and common sense.
@@BlackMan614 Green is not a standard for ground, at least not in DC power setups where ground is black. You may be confusing it with AC networks where ground is yellow/green stripes. However, ground is not bound to any polarity. Not sure what the point is.
Hmmm I know the Alm Pro Workout does more but this does make me want that hands on control. Mainly to use in to a quantiser. What reverb are we hearing. Thanks
If I remember rightly the reverb in these patches was added in Ableton - it varies a bit from patch to patch but I think most of them used Soundtoys Little Plate.
This is great. Can someone help me understand sending a trigger to the reset of the Batumi? How many triggers would it need to reset the cycle say every couple of bars? Does that make sense? I'm using Pamela's New Workout with a Gate.
To reset it every two bars with a gate from PNW, you just need to set the PNW channel modifier to /8 and patch it to the reset input.

Yeah, that's a fair point. I do speak quite fast in real life so I'll do my best to slow down a bit for future videos. In the meantime, you could try it at 0.75 speed if it's a real problem! :)
