    This video explains my process in the building, painting and weathering of Kinetic Lockheed F-104G Starfighter in 1/48 scale. I start the video by building the scale model kit using Tamiya and AK Interactive glues and Mr Hobby tools. The key to building the Kinetic Lockheed F-104G Starfighter in 1/48 scale is to carefully read the instructions and assemble, using the tutorial as a guide. Take care in assembling the scale model kit so the the parts fit accurately and align as intended, this is the easiest way of speeding up the build.
    To paint the Kinetic Lockheed F-104G Starfighter in 1/48 scale it is best to use an airbrush. This video is designed to cover the airbrush basics so that you can see the thinning of paint and application onto the scale model kit. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used in this video along with Ak Interactive Real Colors, Tamiya Acrylics, Mr Hobby Lacquer and Alclad II Metal effect Lacquers. Thinning paint is very importan so I will explain how to do that using the correct thinners for each paint type.
    Decals are applied with the aid of Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. This is a much more inetnse product than Micro Sol an Set solution and helps conform even the thickest decals onto the Kinetic Lockheed F-104G Starfighter in 1/48 scale model kit details.
    The final part is the weathering using more AK Interactive weathering products as well as artists oil paints from Winsor & Newton and Abteilung 502, weathering washes from AMMO by Mig Jimenez and finally VMS Pigments. I start the weathering process using an enamel wash to bring out the panel lines on the scale model kit. Here I use oil washes from AMMO. To seal those in I use a clear acrylic coat from VMS Matte varnish. Further and more detailed weathering follows using artist oil paints which enable me to add streaks, grime and bleaching onto the model to give it a more aged, used and weathered effect. The VMS matte clearcoat varnish is airbrushed onto the Kinetic Lockheed F-104G Starfighter in 1/48 scale. This matte varnish will help the weathering process as the matte finish allows more oil paint to stain the model surface. Dust and mud weathering effects are created using VMS pigments to imitate the weathering on tyres and undercarriage/landing gear.
    Final assembly of the Kinetic Lockheed F-104G Starfighter in 1/48 scale model kit is completed using VMS super glue. All of the final small parts and lights are added onto the model kit to complete the model build.

    This is an incredible build. The F-104 was a great choice. It is one of my all time favorite fighters. Your weathering techniques is outstanding, and what I appreciate is how you use other colors than black to highlight the panels, so many overuse and misunderstand that. A five star build out of five stars.

    That takes me back. Despite living in the far SW UK we saw a interesting mix of fighters, maritime and transport aircraft. On our bike rides we go past the airfield and one time 8 Belgium F-104s howled across in formation and landed in the colours of the kit.

    Great kit from Kinetic but I wasn’t feeling the kit’s offering of decal options so went ahead and bought some aftermarket ones which were great. I used the really thorough walk around as my base build and then several others to get an idea for the weathering.

      The Inner Nerd Scale Modelling I really love that you feel the same as I do about the black panel liner stuff. I look at the beautiful builds and then people do the black. I just gape and keep wondering why people would do that to their work. Some even use that on minis...

Using things at hand can be much more cost effective than paying for a model specific item. Sometimes with a much more realistic result. Again, great video.

    • @TLTeo
      @TLTeo Před 3 lety +2

      The size of the wings is actually deceptive because it's so light. The 104 had comparable wing loading to, e.g., the Harrier, F105 and Jaguar, and less than the Tornado, F111, Su-24 or Mig-27 to name a few.

    • @DavidSmith-ss1cg
      @DavidSmith-ss1cg Před 3 lety +1

      I have actually wondered if this type of design(like the Messerschmitt Bf-109, it is mostly a monstrous engine with wings and tail, and the space for a pilot) somehow appeals to German pilots.
      This plane, like many of the US "Century Series" of jets in the late 1050s and early 1960s, is just so damned good looking. They have a reputation as dangerous to the pilots, too, and the F-104 was no exception.
      Fantastic job on the build, and extra thanks for explaining how you go about selecting the colors and applications to get the fine weathering effects. The tip about spraying through masks is one I'll have to try, too.
      Keep up the great work; we'll be watching!

    The F-104 out-fought everything from that time period. Computer simulations have shown that the faster jet did much better during the age of guns, since it could control the pace of the fight, leaving and re-entering battle as desired. I have like 10 F-104 books, but they all seem to have the same pictures.
    Art books have provided me a much-needed escape from real life. When life was difficult I'd set up my easy chair with coffee, a desk lamp and a stack of art books beside me. They kept me going during the hardest times. My art books are the best investments I ever made.
    My 3 favorite books are:
    - Wonderworks by Michael Whelan
    - Beyond the Horizon by John Harris
    - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

    A good build and I like your videos. You've got the balance right between building and commentary. I must say I get bored when people talk for ages with no action, I think we need to see what is going on rather than listen to loads waffle. I agree with others on panel lining and washes. I hate it when some people cover the model with thick dark washes. It over emphasises panel lines and makes the model look too dark and like the model is dirty, and I don't mean authentic dirty.

    I think it would be awesome if you made the f104 a USAF version which I think looks so cool and iconic

    My Kinetic Gold 1/48 F-104J has just arrived at my local hobby store and I’m heading there tomorrow to pick it up, this is the video that made me buy it. Looks like one of the best f104 kits out there currently. Kinetic gold is absolutely fantastic

      @@TheInnerNerd yeah man I’m on step 13 and I’m absolutely loving it! I’m taking my sweet old time with it and just finished outing together the fuselage halves. Tomorrow going to finish the tiny details and the landing gear, fantastic kit and can’t thank you enough for this video. It’s the reason why I got the kit and I fricken love it

    My favourite aircraft, of course you should do another one! I vote for an Italian model, they had some cool camos too.

    I would LOVE to see a 1970s USAF F104 Starfighter painted in the highly polished aluminum chase plane livery. That one would be a challenge! Those observation chase planes were used for dignitary and high ranking officer reviews of new planes. These F104s were kept much cleaner than usual and the bare aluminum was polished up like chrome plating.

      Kinetic have now made the F-104C version so I will definitely be building that sometime in the future. That one comes with a NMF scheme which looks amazing on these things... Anyway more models to build first! Thanks for watching and stay tuned :)
