- I caught up with the recently “Shopped" RGS #41 on a “Shakedown” run to Rockwood at Hermosa, Friday 11/17/23. In part 1, I chase the test run to Rockwood and record this historic event at several locations along the way. Several stops are made to inspect, lubricate and deal with a hot journal box on the tender on this break in run.
This 142-year-old locomotive looks great and sounds good.
More, including "SHAKEDOWN", Pacing With Tonnage, • The Rio Grande Souther... and soon, Part 2.
Part 2 will include the Rockwood departure, Shalona Crossing, Pinkerton Siding, Hermosa and “Pacing” in the dark to Trimble
The #41 was purchased by Knotts Berry Farm in 1951 and has spent the last 72 years running clockwise around the less than a mile circle. I first rode the #41 at 5 in mid 1950's, again in the mid 90's and mid 2000's. It was awesome to hear, see her running straight at 20+ MPH and pulling a grade.
The #41 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1881 as a 2-8-0 Consolidation, for the D&RG as #409 "Red Cliff", sold to the RGS and renumbered #41 in 1916 and classified as a "C-19" in 1921.
The 70-year-old RGS #41 was purchased by Knotts Berry Farm for the Ghost Town & Calico Railroad in Buena Park, CA. In Feb. 2022 the #41 was trucked to Durango for a complete rebuild and has been off limits to unauthorized photographs and videos till now.
It still amazes me that D&S managed to do this, seeing how the engine is owned by Knotts Berry Farm in California. Sure, this is only temporary, but it's nice seeing 41 getting to go faster than 5-10 miles an hour for once and for the first time in 7 decades. I sure would've loved to see this irl myself, but I've seen this engine a lot over the year so that is something I'm ok with.
The D&S gas been doing outside work for a while now and are very capable. Thanks for watching and
commenting.
@@whitcraft4578 Np and thx.
So exciting. The "going around in little circles for 70 years" brought tears to my eyes!
It's a pretty good gig though! Thanks, for watching and don't be sad.
Beautiful engine; beautiful whistle.
What a great viewing of #41. Never seen this steam engine before. Great photography of the train. Enjoyed watching. 👍👍
Thanks stephen, for watching and your nice comment.
A fantastic video of a fantastic locomotive. It makes me happy to see 41 back in Colorado under fire. I know it’s coming back to Knott’s but how wonderful to have the D and S work on the engine and test run it! I did not think this would ever happen! Fantastic!
It just feels so weird (in a good way) to see a locomotive that’s been in California for so long back in Colorado. It’s quite amazing what the Durango & Silverton can do!
Thanks, for watching and commenting.
Thank you, Bob! What a joy to see this gem.
Thanks Sheepdawg, for watching and your nice comment.
Hello Bob, very nice to see that another C-19 has been reconditioned. The sound of the steam whistle and the bell is great. A fantastic steam locomotive for the D&S, I'm already looking forward to the next video. Thanks for showing and best regards. Wolfgang
Fantastic!!
Thanks, glad you think so!
Putting on an amazing show on her old stomping grounds it’s interesting that before she worked for RGS she worked for D&RG as locomotive number 409
Thanks, for watching and commenting.
Fantastic coverage Bob!! Love this one and such a cool little locomotive. Thank you and looking forward to Pt II.
Thanks William, for watching and your "Fantastic" comment. Part 2 soon. Meanwhile will some Pacing work? czcams.com/video/QngWd_8XHBk/video.html
@@whitcraft4578 Yes sir! This is perfect.
Beautiful day for a work out. 😊
Yes it was, for me too
Is no one going to mention how it is the first time in 70 years that an RGS steam engine was in Durango?
42 is on display at the museum. I’m not sure for how long but she definitely is there. But she’s not in the best condition.
Sorry, I worded that wrong, I meant in operation, like 40
You just did. LOL Thanks, for watching and commenting.
The should pull #42 out of the museum and have the two side by side
Great photo opportunity.
Knotsberry ought to bring the 41 out to Durango more often.
Would be nice, only takes tons of money. Actually heard 340 is next.
I wonder if they will put her by her sister, 42. It would be a nice reunion for the 2 gems.
Agreed! Thanks, for watching and commenting.
Will Knotts alternate steam engine 340 Green River be rebuilt in Colorado also soon????
Good to see 41 stretching her legs again.
IT WAS AWESOME!
When is it returning to Knott's?
Knott's currently has #340 running around, so there's no rush
Is RGS #42 salvageable?
Sure, send cash, tons.
back on home rails... sort of
I live an hour east of a 3-foot narrow gauge railroad called the Huckleberry Railroad, and it has another one of Knotts Berry Farm's former locomotives, Denver and Rio Grande K-27 #464, though she's out of service right now, you can see it on their railfans weekend when they give tours of their restoration shop
