Martha is not only a superlative talent, she is a notably intelligent, educated and accomplished lady. For her fans she is always thoughtful and generous. She is all about her art, not her stardom. She has entertained appreciative audiences all over the globe.
This is great to see SOLO Martha from 1974 on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert which I remember staying up late to see when it was first broadcast. Her MCA solo debut album was awesome as one can hear from the 2 selections that are in this clip!
The Jamerson magic spotlight starts at 6:10 but he's all over the recording! Thank you so much for this very rare to see him playing live at all so this is a National Treasure! And Dennis Coffey on guitar one of the original Studio musicians and Funk Brothers as well... great post thanks so much!
Absolutely wonderful to see so much footage of Jamerson. It's rare indeed. What a genius. Great to see Martha Reeves too - I never realised how much charisma she had and such a distinctive singing style. And then Larry Graham right at the end - nice surprise!
Try this for a thought experiment. I thought that most of the Holland Dozier Holland songs that the Supremes made hits out of were dynamite songs. The only problem was that the Supremes sang them. Try to imagine Martha and the Vandellas doing Love is Like an Itching in My Heart, Come See About Me, Where Did Our Love Go, You Keep Me Hanging on, and others. Martha would have killed them.
Because The Supremes were more like pop artists, but Martha and The Vandellas were more soul, blues and funk artists. They both were great groups and loved one another's music. They did each other's songs. The Supremes did The Vandella's song "In My Lonely Room" and other songs too. They both sound good on each other's stuff especially when Florence was still with The Supremes.
What a treat to see all of these legends live! Wish this version of "Power of Love" had been the LP track as its so much more soulful and alive! The driving beat (thanks to Jamerson) is relentless!!
Man, when they say Jamerson loved open strings, I can see! He plays the line, and plays the open G (the string on the bottom of the neck), instead of playing the G on the D string!
Absolutely flaming fabulous. Martha Reeves, a marvelous, marvelous lady. I first saw Martha Reeves and Vandellas live at an outdoor show in Sacramento in the mid-80s. It was about 100 degrees. I was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt and was uncomfortably warm. The ladies stepped out of a stretch limo dressed to the nines in black, wigs in place and put on one hell of an hour-long show. Have I already used the word 'Fabulous!'? The ladies were and remain a truly class act. I've been looking for this solo concert for years. I'd buy it if it were available. So. Thank you for posting it Caroline.
You beat me to it. Everyone is going on about Jameson-rightfully so- and a few know Wah-Wah Watson, but it seems like everyone was ignoring “ Mr. Scorpio.”
What is even rarer here is that this is post Motown Jamerson. I especially like the last song, which is the one most featuring him. Just the best there ever was. No other way of putting it
just trying to work out the songs played: - Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" (Pete Moore, William "Smokey" Robinson, Marv Tarplin, Ronald White) - "Love (Makes Me Do Foolish Things)" (Holland-Dozier-Holland) - "Power Of Love" (dunno who wrote it)
JanetLeeuwerik The original background singers Annette Beard and Rosland Ashford tell a different story about name here on CZcams billed The Original Vandellas.
No... wait, I retract that! I got a better look... it is Keltner, he is on her albums around that time, of course... along with Gadson. Not used to seeing him without his trademark shades!
Linda Ronstadt sings "your no good" live on midnight special, one of the back up singers is also on this video, wearing the exact same light colored suit! czcams.com/video/haZPPBJC8Ic/video.html
After Martha realized that Berry had abandoned the Vandellas she suffered several nervous breakdown. To be up so high and dropped so low has that effect!
The woman singing in the background and wearing the yellow outfit looks like Clydie King; I assume the back-up group is "The Blackberries" (the same group that worked with Humble Pie).
Is that Jim Keltner on Drums? Its Hard to say but Keltner did some Recordings with her around that Time. That would be an even more fantastic Line up. Keltner and Jamerson together . Can someone help me out?
+Aubrey Simpson Yes sir, check The Temptations recording 'Sorry is A Sorry Word' at 1:45 one can see James Jamerson playing his bass in the background.
Other known footage of James Jamerson is from the Motortown Revue in 1963 where Jamerson appears at the end of the concert. There is also another clip of him playing "My Girl" inside Studio A for a TV segment. I hope there's more footage of him yet to be uncovered.
i am so honor to be able to see how James Jamerson moves.
unreal to see J. Jamerson alive and in action. The myth and the legend. What a thrill
anytime you find a clip with Jamerson it's a keeper
Martha is not only a superlative talent, she is a notably intelligent, educated and accomplished lady. For her fans she is always thoughtful and generous. She is all about her art, not her stardom. She has entertained appreciative audiences all over the globe.

This is great to see SOLO Martha from 1974 on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert which I remember staying up late to see when it was first broadcast. Her MCA solo debut album was awesome as one can hear from the 2 selections that are in this clip!

That's the stuff ay? Full tilt, like Don't Let The Jones' Get You Down by Temps
Absolutely wonderful to see so much footage of Jamerson. It's rare indeed. What a genius. Great to see Martha Reeves too - I never realised how much charisma she had and such a distinctive singing style. And then Larry Graham right at the end - nice surprise!

This is the first film I have ever seen of James Jamerson in action! Amazing, thanks so much.
Lawd this woman can sing her a## off I just love her soul. James Jamerson and Dennis Coffey the band aint nothing but the soulful truth.
I love this, from back in the day, Martha Reeves sound so good.
so rare to see Jamerson in any videos....a true legend and innovator who is an influence to so many...
Martha Reeves singing Where Did Our Love Go? Hmm. Can't see that myself!
Martha herself said that the Supremes songs were a bit too cute for her to sing.
Super Martha Reeves !
I'm only here for king James Jamerson

Her solo debut really is a wonderful album. It is sad so few have heard it.

What a treat to see all of these legends live! Wish this version of "Power of Love" had been the LP track as its so much more soulful and alive! The driving beat (thanks to Jamerson) is relentless!!
7:50 The reason why Martha loved James Jamerson
Man, when they say Jamerson loved open strings, I can see! He plays the line, and plays the open G (the string on the bottom of the neck), instead of playing the G on the D string!
This was great to watch. Thank you.
Martha an Van was Awesome hit after hit Martha was a Supestar

Jamerson....superb.
Martha is cute. CUTE.
Along with Jamerson and Watson that's Dennis Coffey on guitar.
You beat me to it. Everyone is going on about Jameson-rightfully so- and a few know Wah-Wah Watson, but it seems like everyone was ignoring “ Mr. Scorpio.”
Love the pig tails
She be good! i believe there's a song or two missing from this original don kirschner in concert..i think....crazy good!
Hi yes your right...Martha sang 'There's A Storm In My Soul/Wild Night & (I've Got To Use) My Imagination.
Excelllent. Martha Reeves.
What is even rarer here is that this is post Motown Jamerson. I especially like the last song, which is the one most featuring him. Just the best there ever was. No other way of putting it

I know it’s been said here loads of times on here.......but it’s JAMERSON!!!!! Is that Wah Wah Watson next to Dennis Coffey?
just trying to work out the songs played:
- Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" (Pete Moore, William "Smokey" Robinson, Marv Tarplin, Ronald White)
- "Love (Makes Me Do Foolish Things)" (Holland-Dozier-Holland)
- "Power Of Love" (dunno who wrote it)
Martha explaining the name Vandellas, search CZcams for: Martha Reeves visits Saginaw
JanetLeeuwerik The original background singers Annette Beard and Rosland Ashford tell a different story about name here on CZcams billed The Original Vandellas.
Would love to see the entire fabulosity.
Dennis Coffey is another Funk Brother in this video...
Mary Hartman Mary Hartman....xo
@thebarnkickers
Yep he is the master.
I would guess Jim keltner. He's on her album from around that time along with the others on that stage.
No... wait, I retract that!
The late great Clydie King

The Blackberries sung backup on this live.
Wow
and coffey as well!
Marthas great but the reason i'm really here.....6:08
Spirit calls.
Impressive.
After Martha realized that Berry had abandoned the Vandellas she suffered several nervous breakdown. To be up so high and dropped so low has that effect!
Same way Barry did Flo Ballard
Clydie King to Martha's left. Also see dennis Coffey on guitar, Who's the drummer?
roughtake Looks like a young Jim Keltner on the drums.
deinately KELTNER
Lawd. How long have i been taking aboutbthis and whee is the rest of it? Thanks for posting. You have a real treasure.
The woman singing in the background and wearing the yellow outfit looks like Clydie King; I assume the back-up group is "The Blackberries" (the same group that worked with Humble Pie).
these girls were called the Sweet Things, Clydie, Carolyn Willis and maxine willard, not the Blackberries
Carolyn Willis was one of the Honey Cone (Want Ads). I was so surprised to see her in this clip. She also sang with Seals and Crofts with a hit song.
Is that Jim Keltner on Drums? Its Hard to say but Keltner did some Recordings with her around that Time. That would be an even more fantastic Line up. Keltner and Jamerson together . Can someone help me out?
I think the second guitar player is Dennis Coffey.
Merci Caro ! Je retrouvais plus ma copie !
This is not Martha with the Vandellas. This her performing as a solo artist singing her version of Ain't It Peculiar from first solo album.
Shaun Gresham well, the Vandellas never really existed...they rotated over the years...:) But there was always one Martha Reeves! :)
niente male vero........?
i See a yellow flower dancin at 7.00
***** Yep, Thanks for this info !!!
By the way, this is actually just Martha Reeves (no Vandellas).
James Jamerson, also what’s the setlist? I’m just asking. Other than that, cool:).
6:11 FTW

+Aubrey Simpson Yes sir, check The Temptations recording 'Sorry is A Sorry Word' at 1:45 one can see James Jamerson playing his bass in the background.

I hope there's more footage of him yet to be uncovered.
and that clip is superb from 63 at the apollo backing up the miracles at the end of the show with benny Benjamen on drums.
Nathan Miller at the end of the Motown revue in 63 was that him jumping up and down with the bass on his back? Was so cool to see how lively he was!
is it the Tower of Power horn section?
Whats the year here
Then God appeared and spoke at 6:10
does anybody know the name of the first song of the video?
"ain't that peculiar"..
Thats called Church.
+ANonPaidAttorneySpokesperson do you maybe know where to find the original?
The original is found on the album "Moods of Marvin Gaye" (1966) sung by [you guessed it].
Gamble and Huff
No it's not, but the horn section is rockin.
Not the Vandellas
