  • #ICYMI: Our Asian elephant bachelor herd grew about 7,700 lbs. larger with the addition of Duncan, a nine-year-old Asian elephant, who arrived last week from Houston Zoo. This move came at the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Asian Elephant Species Survival Plan, and supports our ongoing efforts to help save and protect the endangered species.
Integrating a new elephant into an established herd is no small task, but we’re happy to share that Duncan is settling in well! Our incredible elephant care specialists are ensuring this transition goes smoothly for Duncan and they’re following his lead to make sure he’s comfortable and has everything he needs to thrive in his new home. We’re also happy to share that introductions with our bachelor boys have been going well. Duncan was introduced and warmly welcomed into the herd by 53-year-old Groucho and 14-year-old Chuck. Our animal care specialists will continue to introduce him to other members of the group as he settles in.
As he acclimates to his new home, Duncan may have access to the outdoor Toyota Elephant Passage habitat directly east of the Clayton F. Freiheit Elephant House or to behind-the-scenes indoor areas. In the meantime, check out this video of Duncan’s first time outside last week and watch as he explores part of Toyota Elephant Passage with Groucho. 🐘
