  • The Donner Harmonic Square Pedal is an octave and pitch shift pedal that creates unique sounds. This sort of effects pedal is not my sort of thing usually, but I thought it was worth a shot! Find out about it at the website below.

    Been using this pedal for a few years. I mostly use it in the 2 octaves up position on a specific song, but I bought it to fake the bass one night when the bass player was absent. A signal splitter into this with the dry at 0 and the wet maxed, and then through the bass cab worked well, but it's a very versatile pedal. The middle positions almost works as a chorus.

    I have this pedal. I use it for three things---- to imitate a bass guitar,.to Imitate a 12 string guitar,and to simply play in a different key without having to learn new chord shapes for the same song. Now this is not going to sound as authentic as the guitars I mentioned but if you are pressed for cash or you just want those sounds once in a while without shelling out hundreds of more for those guitars, do what I do and use this pedal or one similar to it.

    I know this is an old video, but why not. A lot of the fun of pitch shifters comes when combined with other pedals. Driving an octave down into a thick fuzz sounds monstrous, running a heavily gated, synthy fuzz into a detune and playing quick staccato runs gives you a great sci fi feel, and running an octave up into a rotary speaker and reverb (or vibrato->trem->heavy spring reverb if you want something that sounds like an old B-movie soundtrack) and playing palm muted arpeggios gives a great creepy organ sound.

    These things ALWAYS tend to NOT get the upper shifts right! The lowers always sound pretty natural, but when you go ABOVE the guitars natural range, they sound synthy and unnatural! You could NEVER get a realistic 12 string emulation with these, tho this 1 didn't do it TOO badly!
    They COULD make it sound better when going higher but DON'T!
    I can get a far more realistic 12 string sound on a recording by doubling up a recorded track then shifting the 2nd track up 1 octave, and it sounds GREAT!

If you blend the wet signal right, it adds a nice keyboardlike sound to your guitar, that blended with like a delay, slow phaser, and volume pedal can lead to some real cool organlike tones but yeah not the greatest for a 12 string sound, ok if dialed in moderately

    Well, the static interval pitch shifting has limited uses - you certainly can't shred over all of the scale tones, or you'll get what you got, minor or major thirds very much not in scale. You'd need to be mindful where you can play these intervals, and then hit those notes, and not sound out of tune. It's too much of a mental load for me while improvising. If I have to think about it, I could probably just play those intervals without a pedal.
    Intelligent harmonizer effects where you dial the scale in and the effect varies the interval it creates depending on what step you play are a lot more useful. With those, you can solo over scales (but probably would still have to watch it in the blues). But these static interval pitch shifters the Chinese manufacturers keep putting out there just make me think they're throwing in features without understanding how to use them.
    But minor third pitch shifting would sound good over diminished chords. :)

    If you turn the knob so that it is all effect and no original signal, you can play a song in another key.

    Grrrrrr why doesn’t it do +1 semitone? It starts at +2 and I would need the 1.

    • @anthonydouglas1854
      @anthonydouglas1854 Před 5 lety

      Use the middle setting (detune) and go up or down 10 cents, that's the closest you'll get to 1 semitone

      It starts at plus or minus 2 semi tones, however you can use the detune setting and go up or down by 10 cents and that's the closest you'd get to going up or down 1 semitone
