I don't understand why people say that she needs to have actually met Joanne to write about her..Her aunt's death was a tragedy that affected her whole family. Joanne died young and she didn't die a "natural death" she died of Lupus (a disease that runs in Gaga's family). Joanne was her father's only sibling..so Gaga would have witnessed the aftermath of this loss while she was growing up. Plus Gaga is inevitably linked to Joanne..her name is Stefani Joanne..Joanne's name was Joanne Stefani..Duh she'd have some kind of connection with her aunt even though she died. Plus please remember she wrote this song for her grandmother and father, so it's written in their perspective. They're the ones speaking in "Girl where do you think you're going?"

Lady Gaga's parents have a restaurant in New York City a few blocks away from my house. And it's called Joanne! I've eaten there once, it's pretty good actually. It's amazing that this poor woman's passing inspired both a wonderful restaurant and a wonderful album.
I've wanted to go to New York for a long time. I'd definitely go to their restaurant when i go, i'd imagine they do some proper top notch Italian food there :)
Hopefully i'd be able to reserve a table there, does it often get very busy, even on weekdays?
You're so lucky. I live all the way in California and literally the first place I want to eat at is that restaurant whenever I visit NYC(I visited my boyfriend once in RI and we took a road trip to JFK, I saw the outside of the city but haven't been in it).
I live in California, and when I flew out there on a business trip a few years back, Joanne Trattoria was on my to do list. I got there at 6pm but they didn't have room until 9pm. So I basically explored the area by myself late night for 3 hours. Bought some one wine on the same block as the restaurant, saw the music school that Gaga went to, walked the streets and through the park, while this song was playing repeatedly in my head. The experience was calming, beautiful, yet haunting.
When I went back to Joanne's, a seat opened up, and I had the most delicious and filling meal. It is a very charming restaurant, and the staff are extremely friendly. Thank you to Gaga, and Joanne for the wonderful experience, may your spirit rest in peace.

LG can sing the phone book and still sound amazing. She can sing anything you challenge her with. She is an incredible show woman. She's so funny, bubbly, cheeky, even. I love her personality. My older sister loved Lady Gaga. My family always knew to get her something of Gaga’s for either her birthday or Christmas. Unfortunately she passed away 2 and a half weeks ago. Now it hurts hearing anything of Gaga’s but I will be playing this song at her viewing. This song will never not make me cry while hearing it because of the memories that are now stained within it.

When I found out that her aunt had died from this disease and that she had dedicated this album and this song to her, I was moved, because it's not just a tribute to her, but to all of us who fight against this damn disease every day. I hope the world becomes more aware about lupus thanks to this 💜

She got diagnosed with it years ago, and it wasn’t until a few years ago that I learned the extent that it affects her. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. I had the same reaction as you did when I found out that Gaga’s aunt had Lupus and passed away. Lady Gaga is talented and she is such a beautiful, and amazing human being. Well, didn’t expect to be in tears after this one. While the songs done for her Aunty it will hit home with anyone who has ever lost someone, but also with anyone who has been a little lost. Bravo.
I also had an aunt who's name was Joanne, she was also a Texas girl. Beauty pageant girl, one of the most glamorous people I've ever met still to this day. We lost her to Alcoholism when I was 14 years old. I always felt a very strong connection to her, like I understood her. I unfortunately started drinking not long after that, I also became an alcoholic, just got sober a year ago. She was a very broken person, those seem to run in my family. This song is such a beautiful reminder of all the parts of her that weren't broken though. Her smile could light up a whole room there was so much love in it. But so much pain behind her eyes. It can be a cruel world, I feel like it chewed her up and spit her out. She deserved better. I really love this song though it is such a beautiful homage to lost loved ones. My heart goes out to anyone who's mourning a loved one

My daughter doesn't speak to me any longer and it's been 4 years. I sent her this song because I miss her so much and want her to know I will always love her. Joanne has no idea how many lives she has touched in losing her own. I live with Lupus as well. All of those that suffered before us has paved an easier road for us. Lady Gaga is emotionally intelligent. It can be a blessing or a cruse. I am surrounded by people that keep their feelings close to the vest. I wonder if some of them feel at all. I wish I could give them a little of my own feelings at times.

i will always remember how i listened to this song in my earbuds in the hospital at 3am as i watched my beloved great grandma take her last breath in the hospital after having suffered a stroke on christmas. it helped me through the grieving process so much. this song was immensely healing for me and i know it has been for so many others and it is one of the many reasons why it’s my favorite song of all time.

gaga is the most talented artist out there these days, fight me. writing all of her songs by herself, having the most powerful, angelic voice, nearly all of her music videos tell a story and could pass as a short movie with lyrics that actually mean something and you can hear the passion and emotions in her voice. she is not just making some mainstream music to get that money. with every song she makes she wants to get a message out there. gaga is one of the most iconic music artists in history.
Totally agree. It is like when you watch her music videos/short films you are transported to her world and she holds your hand and takes you through a journey. She really is the biggest artist in the industry because she has a maturity and is a visionary. I also think her intelligence, both cognitive and emotional intelligence combined with her discipline for passion, her work ethic, her strength, her bravery makes her the best artist on Earth. I'm partway through the Gaga documentary on Netflix, and it got to a part where Lady Gaga played this song to her gran about her daughter. I had to come out and play the whole thing here to hear the lyrics in full. It's just had me in floods of tears- coz this song means something to me, too. It's what i would say to my own baby that i lost. I lost my baby through an ectopic pregnancy, but i always believed my baby was a girl. Her heart was beating inside me, and i will never forget watching that on a scan. And she will be 7 years old next month in heaven.
