      Why do actuaries in Asia work nowhere close to normal hours as 'westerner' counterparts... listening to actuaries in US, Canada and Europe talk about their work is very depressing. You commented elsewhere about fellows making 6 figures or "similar everywhere in the world" but this is quite far from the truth in SEA (ex-SG/HK), unless you've got at least a decade of experience and managing team(s). Sorry for being rant-y but several of us watched this and got intense emotional reactions!

    • @VLifeJournal
      @VLifeJournal  Před 3 lety

      Lol no worries, I understand your “rant”. I also chat with some friends working in Asia recently and it seems like the longer hours may due to there are less number of actuaries available on the team and thus each needs to take on more work. Here the work is perhaps more structured and routine. Their pays are also good but like you said, by the time they go back to Asia they are already fellows with some leadership experience and that is where my comment originated from, which is definitely skewed.

    How relevant are the exams/math computations in every day actuarial work? (seeing how you work mostly out of Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)

    • @VLifeJournal
      @VLifeJournal  Před 9 měsíci

      Good question. Actually Excel is still one of the common tools for math computations and data/stats analysis in the actuarial field.
      The math and problem-solving skills acquired through exams are still the bedrock of actuarial work. They enable actuaries to understand complex concepts, develop models, and make informed decisions. So, while the day-to-day might involve less math, the math knowledge underpins everything we do.

    Thank you for posting! Which software or programming languages do you use the most? Is it advisable to have a masters?

    • @VLifeJournal
      @VLifeJournal  Před 3 lety +4

      Hi Louis, Excel is definitely the top application that we use (and VBA). There are other actuarial applications like AXIS but one can only learn it on the job. I talk a little bit more about this at 13:30 mark on this video czcams.com/video/B5lA-nBETlI/video.html
      I wouldn't recommend getting a master in actuarial science unless you use it as an opportunity for career switch by leveraging the university's alumni network or career center. Hope that helps and feel free to let me know if you have other questions.

    • @VLifeJournal
      @VLifeJournal  Před 2 lety +2

      The answer would be it depends - depend on what you like, what you are good at, your desired career prospects and more. I don't think there will ever be a definite answer for which job is better between the two. You can check out other videos about what actuaries do and there is also a video about Actuary and Accountant in this page to help you do more research and make an informed decision: www.vlifejournal.com/actuarial

    Can an actuary work after he/she attains 60 years of age?
    Is there any formal retirement age for actuary?

    • @VLifeJournal
      @VLifeJournal  Před 3 lety +4

      Absolutely. I believe retirement age depends on the country. In Canada, people typically retire at age 65. There are some actuaries come back to work part time as consultants after a few years off after their retirements as well.

    • @VLifeJournal
      @VLifeJournal  Před rokem

      It is true although I want to point out that it may not be because they are actuaries that they earn so; instead, their roles have such compensation and that they happen to be an actuary. For example, you can find interview on my channel with a former CEO of Sun Life who is an actuary (although CEOs can come from many backgrounds, eg MBA, accountant etc). You can check out salary sources for actuaries in this video czcams.com/video/miYUdN7TwfE/video.html
