The 1st time I heard this song was at a concert in a casnio. They showed a video with it. As I watched & listened, I suddenly became aware that"Joe" could have been my father and everybody else's at the concert. I no sooner began to tell my girl friend, that it reminded me of my late father, the video showed an elderly lady kneeling in front of a gravesite. I began to cry. Years later I still can't tell the story without "tearing up"

Thanks for the beautiful song and video, Joe! My daddy fought that war in Europe as well. He came home, laid his rifle down and picked up the Gospel Sword and preached some 45 years until his death in 1994.........16years in Paris, TX and 24 in Perry, OK. We owe such a debt to those like my dad and your parents. God Bless.

Thank you. My dad got busted-up a bit in that war. Keeping the memory of your parents alive is a loving tribute to the generation that conquered the forces of evil. Its easy to forget, perhaps, that the blessings we now enjoy were purchased at the cost of much loss and suffering. Many of the brave soldiers are too humble to recount their bravery. Let us continue to do so in gratitude on their behalf, our fathers and mothers who endured the war so that we might be spared. Thanks Joe and ORboys!

Thanks to your Parents for laying there lives on the lines for our freedoms Joe.
I also come from Military heritage, & I try to thank every veteran I come across in real life, whether if it's noticing a base sticker on someone's vehicle, veteran license plates, or if they are wearing some type of VFW or other type of Military clothing, I will at least try to make the attempt to thank them for their service to our country.
It doesn't matter if it's home or abroad, these veterans deserve our respect, even though most give the ultimate price with their lives, the ones who survive, suffer on a daily basis, especially if they served in Vietnam or wars before.
GOD BLESS OUR VETERAN BROTHERS & SISTERS!!

What a love story! This is definately one of the top Oak Ridgeboys songs ever!!! As a war veteran, I fully understand the "Old wounds" that come back to haunt us all. They are safely in the arms of our father now.

This is so beautiful. I am so blessed that I have a marriage that is still that strong after 48 years, so I can just feel their pain at the end, knowing that one of them has to go first. May they rest safely in the wonderful arms of Jesus. God Bless you for sharing this story with the world.

Simply the most beautiful patriotic song I have ever heard in my life,I honestly can't put my finger on it,but this song really puts a lump in my throat,if I had to guess as to why I would say as a veteran of war myself I just relate to those words where the song says the " the battle still echoes in his head and his old wounds come back to haunt him.

Same here, Stephen. What beautiful and patriotic tribute. I work at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV, and this really hit home for me. I still can't watch it with dry eyes.

My family and my husband's family consist of many veterans, some here, some not, and some who have died giving "the ultimate sacrifce" serving this great country of ours in Viet Nam and Afghanistan. Thank you for your beautiful parents. My husband is involved with escorting veterans home when they return from the war through his membership in the American Legion Riders. To see their faces when the motorcycles escort them home is a sight so emotionally filled with love and pride.

Just bought the book for my Mom, Dad just passed away August 11, 2009, the day after my Mom's birthday. She cries everytime she hears the song & read the book in one sitting, she couldn't put it down.

Outstanding,,,,it gave me chills! Played it over and over. This song hit home since my father, a wounded Marine in Korea was born, worked and raised a family in Philly. Someone needs to put a CD together with songs like this and have the proceeds go to a Veteran's group! THANK YOU to anyone whoever wore the uniform...USA : Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

This video is the greatest. It brings tears every time I hear it. My dad was in the army. My 84 year old mother wants it on DVD for Christmas and if there is any way possible, she will have it...and the book!
