- How to change out your ATF fluid yourself on a Mazda 6 - Do it yourself.
ATF oil I use: amzn.to/2sCmNF8
or
Genuine Mazda ATF: amzn.to/2u4ZN6j
Drain bolts are usually 20-30 ft lb of torque or a general rule of thumb: 1/4 turn past hand tight
Great video. As an alternative approach, I use a small 12volt transfer pump to pump the old oil out thru the dip stick and then send the new fluid back down the dipstick. I get out about 2.75qts per drain/fill cycle and it takes almost zero time. My 6 has 222k miles on it and I always use Valvoline Max-Life full synthetic multi-vehicle ATF fluid. No need to jack the car drop bottom shroud, back out the fill plug, climb under the car, etc - especially if you are going to go thru multiple drain fills and drive car around between. This car is rock solid and reliable - son is taking it to college.
nice~!
thanks for the post, I tried extraction, it works for my 06 Mazda 6 as well
Suppose to take 3.5 quarts lol
Awesome video with many explained details I got the 2010 Mazda 6 very similar I got the transmission hose going tru the radiator that I need to replace cause is leaking not much but I going to replace it.
Good video , however the drain plug looks exactly like mine its NOT magnetic.
There is a donut magnet inside the pan when you remove the pan .
Note ;that the pan hold about 1 more liter of oil ,that does not drain from the plug due to the way the drain is welded to the pan.
Also, there is a replaceable plastic filter that should be replaced.
Some of the pan bolts are a bit of a pain, but you can remove them with a 10mm swivel.
I used ATV silicone and ditched the rubber gasket that came with the filter kit, and torqued the pan bolts to spec.
Hi there. Just curious why did you ditch the Rrubber gasket. Was it the Bec & Arnley filter kit? Is that gasket no good. Asking cos Im considering the same kit. Also any tips on getting to those hard to access pan bolts hidden by the fender well? What were the torc specs for the bolts?
Recommended fluid for mazda6 is ATF M-V, AFAIK Mercon-V is not the same. Are you sure that you are using right fluid?
Yes, been running it for 100k miles now...
Always follow the owner's manual. Whatever they say to put in, you want to make sure you follow that.
Wb atf LV
Adam Domonski I’m going to try that...hoping it will suffice until I can get it to a transmission shop.
Hi sir
I have 2011 2.0 (petrol ) with 5 automatic
I found while check with car computer the p0841 that code mean pressure low in transmission , i dont have any problems or check lamps but i see the dipstick and the colore of fluid is like grey or black and i wanna to change it for first time (180000 km ) and i don’t find atf v for mazda here in libya but theres dealer for valvoline Oil i wan’t to ask is this oil work with hot weather like libya in summer , second how many liters that i need ,third change filter or leave it .
Thank you ...best regards
Excellent video thank you, quick question do I also change the transmission filter, I don't know where it is, can you give some direction with that thank you I have a 2011 Mazda 6 i and its the 2.5 liter 4 Cylinder Automatic
Information that I've seen is that this vehicle requires M5 fluid. That is not the same as Mercon V
I could be wrong, but saw specifically that point. that is for the 2.5 L auto transmission. I believe the 6 cyl. is different.
The viscosity is different between those two fluids.
M5 has greater viscosity at lower temperatures. Please research and verify for yourself
For sure there is better fluid, the one I used is still working good today!
I hate that undercarriage
I have a 2009 Mazda speed 6 with the 3.7 the manual says use jws3309 fluid do you know if I absolutely need to use that type of fluid or would a valvoline equivalent be fine?
Hello...I have a 2011 mazda 3 and my manual book says to use Mazda ATF M-5...would it harm my transmission if I use the valvoline Mercon 5? Thanks!
Yes according to the Mazda website you must use M5 transmission fluid do not use Mercon it is a lower viscosity. M5or MV is not an abbreviation for Mercon 5 or Mercon V..... the only place I can find M5 transmission fluid is through Amazon and it's 13.45 a bottle
Hey man good informative video. How many drain and refills should you do to completely get the old tranny fluid out? I’ve changed my transmission fluid but it’s gone back to brown. Should it be changed twice every 800 miles?
Did you try dropping the pan, replacing the transmission filter, cleaning out the pan and the donut magnet on the inside of the pan?
Hi @drewtalks great video !! How many litres or millilitres do you need to typically fill when you first flush the transmission fluid from the sump? Also once the initial fill has been done, do you go for a quick drive, cycle through the gears and then refill a little after that ? how many millilitres etc ? Thanks and regards
I do it all at once, I cannot remember right now I thought it was about 2.5 quarts
I have the same car and I noticed that the key was actually in the ignition in this video. Have you had issues with the keyless entry system or other electrical problems? I have had some of these issues with no resolve.
Yo
Do you recommend flushing or changing? Will it make much of a difference maintenance wise and in the long run?
Yo
Have you noticed wear on the fluid because of heavy manual/automatic use ?? Seems whenever I use the left gate and manually control my shift the fluid gets darker quicker.
i do not inspect it that regularly...maybe someone else can comment?
I have the maxlife multi-vehicle atf fluid in mine for 61k miles now at 135k total mileage on vehicle. It has been 6 years since you posted this video? How did your transmission hold up?
Still going strong!
Nice. Do you know where the transmission fluid filter?
no sorry
Hi I don’t find the red dipstick that you have in your video. I only got the small grey dipstick held by a bolt. Is that the right dipstick? Thank you in advance.
That is the right one. If you havent already figured it out lol
my 2013 has no dipstick ,, wtf
Hey bud. I have a question! I have 2013 mazda 6. Im doing a transmission refill. I located the little grey dip stick located on the firewall of the transmission. It was held in place with a little bolt. I was just curious, do you refill from the same place the little grey dipstick is or is there another location? Thanks!!
yup grey dipstick kind of a pain get the right funnel and makes your life much easier
my god you change your ATF a lot. how often do you change the actual filter?
on a side note wanted to point out 2 things you may or may not be aware of. a lot of newer cars don't come with dipsticks for checking ATF anymore. also you want to sniff the ATF as well, if it smells burnt you may have some problems
well i only change the oil twice per year (i run synthetic oil) and as i mentioned this method doesn't take out ALL the atf im just rotating out atf
DrewTalks , I get what you are saying, probably a good method. I was still going by the old 3k mile oil change theory. my bad
never said how often you change the filter
Country Cledus bb
Would this be the same for the 3.7l v6? I’m assuming you have the 4 cylinder?
yes
The atf pan is not the same...
ohhh woops misread your question i thought you said 4 cylinder no they are different...
DrewTalks where is the recommended jack stand points?
550th video congrats
wowowowow have to keep going now!
yeah
My 2011 mazda 6 got 50k miles but I dont know if the previous owner ever changed the automatic transmission fluid. Should I change it?
ehhhhh it depends on how it was driven, if you have extra cash I would but it will be fine...
I thought you can pull the transmission fluid lower cooler line and let it pump out while adding more while on or whatever can get it all out /changed? My cvt is a different story. Also funnels suck. You can get a nice pump for 7$ on Amazon with a hose so much nicer imo. Do you torque the plug? I'm paranoid and torque stuff since I had a geo easy to break things lol
Papa Linus that works great in old Americana where every plug was a gargantuan. These 8mm pos I can think it isn't tight yet and break the little bigger off in there. Maybe I should stop working out...
Pap linus you may be right, but for someone who doesnt wrench on a car much why guess when you can be exact with a torque wrench
Which one of these lower cooler hoses should we pull out? I mean which one is the return ?
Hey I have the same car and the transmission oil pan gasket is leaking. My worry is I’ll get all the bolts off and the oil pan (tranny) won’t come off because of the subframe. Do you know if this will be an issue?
i do not...That would be a major design flaw though that you have to remove the subframe or lift the engine to get it off....
I got the same issue too...so stupid design
You should be using ATF Type M
How do I know if I need to change the transmission fluid? I just bought a 2010 Mazda 6.
if your unsure when it was changed, change it anyways
Did yo change the oil filter or just the oil?
both
How many bottle of ATF did u put in 2 and a half??
3.5 quartz
FOR AUTOMATIC YOU NEED TO PUT 8.14 L
No
For version 3.7 use mercon v? Or type iv?
@@LITTLEROCK2517 ??
ummm my 2011 mazda 6 dont have a dipstick....and i looked everywhere under the break fluid area?????
is it automatic?
yeap
The 2010+ are different so it's likely a sealed transmission. There will be no dip stick
Hot 1LE is it still possible to change the at oil on 2011 Mazda 6 as it’s a sealed transmission
For the cars that don't have a dipstick, there is a little stopper in the same location, secured by a bolt. Undo the bolt and treat that access hole the same way you would access the dipstick hole for filling.
nice
I have a Mazda 6 2009 2.5 liter grand touring I. And 8mm Allen wrench did not fit the transmission plug...
hmmmm works for mine maybe we have a different motor try google
That was my fuck up it was a standard set not metric. FACE PALM
Mine has 91k miles btw, runs like a fucking dream. Thanks for your help drew.
ALSO to get the clicking to go away what exactly did you tell the dealership about lubing your axle or something? Dude at my dealership said they would have to pull the boots off and he also said something about the CVT joints? I'm not sure but it only clicks when i go from park to reverse at the moment and it happens about 50% of the time..
you need a pump to flush the atf all out you missed atleast 8 quarts of fluid... only way is to flush it
you have a link to the manual?
He already informed us that you cant get all of it out. The point is to change it frequently (as he said, every other oil change), or drain it 2- 4 times in a row to dilute the old fluid enough to where it's mostly clean
You don’t have to flush anything
Trying to drive an automictic like a manual... that's pretty special
Commenting on a CZcams video about it being special..more special?
Your using the wrong fluid but to each their own
Many years later, still running, approaching 180k miles!
Hi!!
HELLO!
Hi, I have a Mazda Model 6 2009 I do not know what kind of oil is suitable for gearboxes, what volume is suitable?

there is multiple models google and make sure you have the right model there is a 6cyl and 4 cyl
@@drewtalks My car is a 4-cylinder 2.0
omg jack up the car unscrew 6 screws and fill the oil. mechanic shops want hundreds of dollars for this simple work....
LoL right?
@@drewtalks just did it today. spilled about half quart while putting it in. come back to tell everyone, and saw that u did mention it. DO NOT pour too fast. the air inside can only go thought the dipstick opening.
If the cost includes replacing the filter inside the pan, I can see why. I replaced my filter and its a bit of a pain.
@@MikePatey-ho8mh Any tips on removing those hard to access pan bolts/ Also what torque are the bolts please?
So you don't show how to get the pan off?...brilliant I just wasted my time watching this video
Thank you for your video, saved me money for my girlfriend.
Lol nice, tell your gf hi
