  • The beautiful, ungovernable Rjukan waterfall had the power, and the engineer, Sam Eyde, and the physicist, Kristian Birkeland, had the know-how.
Fertilizer was in great demand all over the world because of the booming, global population. This was a vital factor for the construction of a large-scale hydro-electric power station and one of the world's most sophisticated electrochemical processing plants of the era.
The remote Vestfjord Valley, where 50 families lived in 1907, experienced an industrial revolution. Barely ten years later, the valley had become a busy industrial community, with 10,000 inhabitants and a network of contacts in all corners of the world.
Rjukan was home to the first heavy industrial plant in Norway. You will still find a concentrated form of Norway'

    The sun mirror in Rjukan
The founder of the town Rjukan, Mr Sam Eyde, launched the idea in 1913 of a “Solspeil”, or sun mirror, above Rjukan. He saw the importance of the “sun in Rjukan” as well in the winter. He also had a need to give his workers the opportunities for sunlight in the winter. This idea is one of the few Sam Eyde did not manage to follow through to completion.
Instead, his successors built a gondola in 1928 to transport Rjukan´s inhabitants to the winter sunshine. This gondola is called Krossobanen. It remains functional and is an important connection between the town and the mountains, where the sun´s rays are limited in the winter months. Krossobanen transports thousands of people to the mountains every year.
Also in this video, you will see how expensive Norway Food shopping can be and we tour our Airbnb that we stayed in the town of Rjukan.

I like an early start but 04.00.....never been to Norway but my brother went to Iceland, which he loved but said man was it expensive. The supermarket looked very much like the ones in the UK and the kids sure seemed to enjoy their breakfast. The AirB&B seemed pretty fair, nice and clean and those views were superb but what a great idea the sun mirrors were, need to get that Vitamin D in to everyone, cheers Alan.

Had to smile when I saw you guys walk inside with the outdoor shoes on. That is a "no no" in 99.9% of the homes in Norway ;)

@@chasingadeline You probably saw the shoe rack just inside the door to the apartment :)
I'd be a bit careful with the drone these days. People and authorities are a bit on edge due to the current situation in the world. They have arrested several Russians with drones already that are not permitted to use drones now.
So make sure you don't go to close to airports (5km) and petroleum installations like refineries and gas terminals. Also power stations and power substations might be risky.
People might report you and you'll have to waste time talking to the police and such.
Såheim and Vemork power stations are beautiful buildings for sure. They don't really make good looking power stations like this anymore.
The Såheim building is quite large as most of the mass was for the factory. Only the front lower row of the building houses the turbines. Originally 11 turbines, but today only 3 in the east part of the hall replacing some of the original ones. They were added in 1959, 1961 and 1973

This is my town, and it is not a mountain town (just 250 m above the sea), it is a valley town.
During the war there was a lot of partisan sabotage missions, because the Germans wanted to use heavy water produced here for atomic bombs, ah I hear the last part of the video now, there will be a follow up, nice.
    Take care!

Thank you for pointing that out. We loved visiting Rjukan!!! I wish we had more time to see more of that part of Norway. The main reason we went here was to see the museum and see how Norwegian held stop the Nazis giving atomic bomb.

Tax is always included in the prices (except if it's only marketing to other businesses and not citizens). You'll get a receipt that shows how much of it you paid in tax, but it's not something people think about, even if VAT may vary between certain products. There are other special tax/fees also, like on sugar (due to being unhealthy), these are also always included in the prize and does not even show up on your receipt. The only "unfair" prizing you'll find, is on return fees for bottles and cans, usually the fee is not included and you'll see "(+ pant)" behind the prize. Returning bottles, is easy in Norway, though.

@@BrimirMe thank you for sharing. yes, I remember saying a video showing how easy it is to recycle bottles in Norway. Here in California, it's not so easy.

It is 15% tax, but it is always included in the price. What is not included is the deposits on bottles which is usually 2 NOK/0,2 USD per bottle/can. You get that back if you recycle your used can at the store.
