Maybe we have a different definition for shred. Because Corgan shreds like a beast, imo.
For sure. They mention he's not shred when they weren't shredding.
Haha I found that funny because they play I am one and that clearly has some sick shredding licks
Came here to say that as well... Dude's fingers move like lightning when he wants them to
I ran to the comments as soon as i heard that
Yeah, his early stuff on Gish was freaking insane
"he's not a shred guy" - Billy was in a metal band called Hexxen before Pumpkins and tranferred loads of shredding licks and solos into his later work. There's metal solos all over pumpkins stuff, just with a different tone and approach.
I was just thinking that. Good call. There's definitely bits of shred sprinkled everywhere in his music
His 1st band was the Marked.
Billy Corgan is clearly the most underrated “shred guy”, of his era! Haha
Of any era for that matter, definitely a top 100 guitarist.
Caiden Walters i’ve been saying that my entire 13 years on this planet
Did you say Billy Corgan isn't a shred guy? Have you listened to the solos on Siamese Dream? Did you see them live during that era?
Soma
@@KeeperOfPoops do you come on here once a year or something to comment that? Does Soma have a solo on it or something? XD
Yeah, even his stuff on _Gish_ is freaking interesting. When I first heard I Am One I was absolutely blown away
Or just search a video called Billy Corgan Guitar Solo 1985. There 18 year old Billy shreds so hard
Geek USA is a good one
Yaaaay!!!! One of my favourite bands - you guys did a great job :-)
Mine too!
Sound like Weezer?
CHAPPERS!
I'll be seeing them in 5 days in Oklahoma City! Feel like a kid at Christmas!!
mpactdesignmedia saw them In Dallas on the 18th of July it was badass.
8:05 billy not a shred guy??? have you not listened to any of gish/siamese dream? there are some wicked solos on those records..
Soma
William Allison Exactly!
viktor knezevic yes some of his solos are pretty fast.
not to mention Geek USA and Quiet. the solos Billy does in those songs are insane.
His pre pumpkins band when he was still basically just a kid, he was completely a shredder. He might have toned it down throughout the years, but he's still got chops.
1- use a strat
2- use a JCM800 on low sensitivity master cranked and use preamp as your volume
3- OP AMP*** Big Muff pedal.
4- not a shred guy...? 🙄🤦♂️
Right!!!
it would also help to load your strat with lace sensor single coil config humbuckers
this is like dollar store discount rob and lee
Without busting the bank, the video says
Billy Corgan is not a shred guy??? 🤔😂 god, he’s such an underrated guitarist.
Disagree with the guitar choice as it wasn't used on any of their classic recordings. Needs to be a 70's looking stat with lace sensor pickups, or other humbuckers in a single coil form factor. I would have gone for a squier deluxe hot rails strat (even looks like the old billy corgan signature fenders). A big muff, mxr distortion +, and some kind of phaser
Great shout mate
Robindra Neogi Yeah, but they probably wanna sell some of the reverend's.
Yeah, sounds about right to me, but I am a little unsure about the latest MXRs. If you can find one of those old early 80's MXR Dst+, try it with a Muff. Pretty sure he used the old ones.
I'm going to try a Red Witch distortion into a Muff Pi.
Big Muff Pi + MXR Distortion + MXR Phase 90 (Speed all the way down) + Boss Harmonizer + Boss DD-7 (Reverse setting). Boom. Basic Siamese Dream rig.
I agree it doesn't have to be the same exact gear, but disagree they got the sound right, it sounded too muddy to me and only focussed on one aspect of their sound rather than the dreamy spaced out bits that are just as important.
I just don't think it was particularly informative, Corgan signature guitar and big muff are obvious choices that people could arrive at after a cursory google, would prefer these videos go into some detail of the key equipment a band used and how it contributed to the sound, in this case 70's strat with lace sensors, and then make a case for another guitar being able to get the similar sound, the reverend guitar is very different I think.
With the pedals, big muff is a solid choice, but there are many cheap alternatives that are just as good, and then they could have incorporated a phaser and delay for the more quieter parts. Could have also discussed dual fuzz pedals like the devi ever rocket that give both a solid rhythm fuzz, and the super nasal lead tone, maybe touched on his Corgan's use of the EHX micro synth for lead tones, or even e-bows.
I know they have a limited budget and are limited by the stock that is in the store, but think this was a missed opportunity as the Pumpkins really had some of the best and most varied guitar textures
Billy Corgan is not a shred guy?! are you kidding me? You guys must have never listened to Gish... DO!
His 1985 hexen tapes really prove them wrong
For Smashing Pumpkins in regards to Billy
Gish: Strat with regular single coils (Billy's was a 70s with flat pole pickups) while plugged into an ADA MP-1 Preamp using his Marshall JCM800 (modded to use KT 88 power tubes) as the power amp. Pretty straight forward other than some leslie type effects for Crush.
Siamese Dream: Strat with lace sensor pickups into an opamp version Big Muff (Plenty of clones online) into just the JCM 800 while using a MXR Distortion II for guitar solos. As far as effects, EHX Micro Synth for the melting guitar solo effect on Today, Ebow for the infamous 40 guitar track part in Soma, and just about a lot of other ones.
Mellon Collie: Strat with lace sensors still plugged into a Marshall JMP-1 Preamp utilizing an Eventide Harmonizer rack unit for his trippy effects along with other rack units and being powered by the Mesa Strategy 500 Power amp (The power amp was what gave that JMP-1 the low end...pretty sure he used KT88s in that too) as far as effects...mainly rack units and a few pedals along the way.
Haven't really taken the time to check up on his recent rig but lately but that's the quick summary of it. James Iha usually had the same gear with a few different effects here and there like the Digitech Rack Unit for the solo to Zero.
Love how much you know. I've always been a casual Pumpkins listener, and remember when my friends got into melancholy back in the day. Being a metal guy that's also a recent strat convert, and kinda wanting to stick to single coils, I find myself taking more of an interest these days. Particularly, Zero is often stuck in my head. I know their crunch sound is fuzz based, and it sounds pretty awesome imo. What I'm really curious about atm tho, is what in the living hell James Iha is doing with that solo in Zero. I just figured he was doing some whammy/pitch shifting, a la Tom Morello. From watching a couple live videos though, it looks like he's using a sharpie or some kind of pen as a slide. His strumming technique makes me wonder if he uses it as a strumming implement as well. Perhaps you could shed some light here?
Any info on what he's using for the stratospheric bends in the cherub rock solo?
@@W0oDy97 not completely sure but from what I remembered it was naturally flanged by slowing down the tape by hand for the whooshing sounds while he bends. I'm pretty sure there might be the microsynth in there as well.
@@Breaker197 live, it might be the whammy setting on the Digitech rack unit set to two octaves up and he just screws around with it or maybe plays some scales. James was using that setting on other songs.
@@Guacavelli billy used the elctro harmonix electric mistress for the Leslie effected on fish and a little on Siamese he also used a orange on some track on melon collie
"how to sound like smashing pumpkins"
Doesn't use strats that Billy used throughout nearly every album
But.... the're not trying to sell strats ;)
He’s also fully converted to using line 6, which would have been cheaper.
Yes ... they don't make it anymore, but he had a sig Strat with DiMarzio hot-rail-style pickups.
Also didn’t use the op amp big muff billy designed
@@tylerzane7579 I don't think he designed it it was just reissued with his endorsement
Fuck yeah! Easily my favorite alternative band of the 90's.
A while ago Billy did a quick video (it was called Stompland and you can find it here on youtube) showing off a bunch of his pedals that he has used throughout the years. He showed one of his Siamese Dream Muffs with the settings still marked on it. Volume 12 o'clock, Tone 1 o'clock, Sustain at full blast.
He also said he used a Phase 100 for solos with the speed all the way down and chose random settings for the intensity
Lastly he also showed off the MXR Distortion II he used through the Muff on solos with the Siamese markings as well. 4, 11, 11, 2 (o'clock)
As for a future suggestion, I'd say CKY. They have such a unique sound.
Yeah that V4 muff is the key to the tone. It's so much more aggressive.
I saw them live in 97 and it was one of my favorite shows ever..
Easily my favorite alternative band of the 90's
I was wondering what your fave was, now I can rest easy.
@@powerboon2k thanks for the weird douchey comment no one asked for as well.
holy shit the guy with the afro lost a lot of weight
He is Rabea
Yeah super proud of Rabea
Sounds like The Cure
Please
Jazzmaster and a shit ton of chorus on it, oh and reverb. Lots of reverb usually. Robert Smith's tone is simple but, DEFINELTY, his own unique tone.
Y'all haven't done STP yet. Btw this is a great episode and y'all always do an excellent job! Thank you for still doing these on a regular schedule and not stopping as this is a wonderful series and I do believe the community loves these!
couldn't you just buy a pumpkin and throw it on the ground
Hank Hill Only in the fall
Hank Hill 😂😂
Got dangit
How about series named "How to start a band without busting a BANK" Take some drums, guitar a bass gear, maybe some PA stuff (we all have to rehearse so some powered speaker and mic or some mixer) and show people how easy it is ;). Cheers from PL
sonic youth please!!!
bates that's a bottomless rabbit hole
bates I still have trouble understanding the 1000 tunings they use
Rene Perez happens we have a nice feeling in this world and I think it’s going well to get a bit out there for a while but we will have a nice weekend and then I’ll get to you as soon bruh bruh was the one that you yyhhhhhhhhhhhbb
Yessyesssss
"billy corgan - hes not a shred guy" what
That was pretty awesome. Brought back some nostalgia feels. Good job guys!
Billy Corgan not a shred guy? He’s an amazing guitar player with some great solos. Also the video of him shredding with a les Paul with a bigsby before the pumpkins, come on
"Sound like Smashing Pumpkins" yeah...you might want to start with vintage strats first, and not Reverend guitars he just started to use a few years ago. seriously, that should be your first step. I am One and Today are both played wrong, and that kills me..
Cherub rock also
I've never heard such bad covers... You can tell these guys aren't fans of the band. Billy ISNT a shred guy?
@@andeh37 fr
It sounds sooooooooooo bad wow. You have to be a fan to play something right they obviously don't get it
A vintage strat, for under 1500 including amp and pedals? lol sure.
So what they're not fans, they recreate sounds based on requests and popular bands. By that logic they have to be fans of about 50 bands by now...
That was GREAT. I loved it....only wish that it was longer and that we got to hear Rabea play some leads over those awesome crunchy rhythms. Good job!!! Bang on.
Sound like sonic youth!
Good luck getting all those weird tunings
Yessss
SUCH a great band!!! Billy Corgan is really underrated as a lead guitarist too.
Been waiting for this one!
Yes finally! Great job guys!!!
About freaking time
Qotsa by busting
yes!!
Just buy the shoup
Try finding Ampeg V4s anywhere
I've been waiting for this one!
Wasn't blown away. Was expecting a Strat, JMP-1, Big Muff and Phase 90.
YAAASSS!! I've been waiting for this one!!!
Challenging groups:
Sound like Dinosaur Jr.
Sound like Ween.
Jammie! Ween - Mustang into an Electro Harmonix Polychorus and then into a Tascam 4-Track direct.. That’s Pure Guava.
OH YES
Now please do Radiohead, Death From Above and Pixies, also Jack White's tone on his solo projects
Radiohead is coming soon and hopefully next week or the weeks after
Yes, Rebea said in his about doing the 'sound like' videos on his own channel that they're doing it, I'm really excited. Radiohead best band ever
Yes on the Jack please
I really want Radiohead. However, I see very little in it unless they DO bust the bank as if they want to make it relevant to the changes across the years there's surely got to be a lot of cool and varied nice stuff to pull it off convincingly...
Hell yes to Death From Above, best lead bass tone
Finally!! Cheers lads, I've been asking for this for ages & it didn't disappoint. I imagine some people might not be too happy with the choice of the Reverend but it's meant to be 'Sounds Like', not 'Looks Like' & those pick-ups totally nailed Billy's tone. Well done!
Been waiting for this one
i love you guys for doing this
my all time favorite band
8:05 well he did play all of the guitar parts (including the solos) and bass parts on the albums with the classic lineup. plus, his background was as a lead guitarist in metal bands. he definitely shreds on occasion. especially live.
Beautiful job as always gentleman.
Love watching you guys play together. Another good vid.
Some "Sounds Like" I'd love to see: Pete Townshend (Tommy or Who's Next-era), J Mascis and Joe Bonamassa!
Dinosaur JR! it's all about the fuzz and the marshall and the J Mascis signature squier of course!
I know! But I'd just love to see the amount of Fuzz-pedals they'd gather for it!
Yes pls for Pete Townshend! :)
The Marshall? Like... one? I think you mean THE WALL of Marshalls! ;)
Now that the Op-Amp Big Muff reissue is out it's also super affordable. You can get an even closer sound than in this video and for much less. The Op-Amp version of Big Muff was the specific model used on Siamese Dream.
YEEESS I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS
Great video guys love the sound, love your show
James last name is pronounced "eeeehaw" :) not Eye-Ha. No biggie, just throwing it out there. Sounds great though, nailed the sound for me.
Mark Artyniuk My bad!!
LOL BILLYS NOT A SHRED GUY... see all of 1994
YESSSS!!! I've needed this for so long.
Nicely done guys. I'm happy to hear another DSL40 video (because I have one :) )
if i ever visit the UK, i have to stop by Andertons as one of my tourist destinations
"He's not a shred guy"
Do me a favor, and search "Billy Corgan Hexen tapes" on CZcams
That was so cool really look forward to your demo -reviews thanks guys
Nailed it! Sounded great guys
Sounds like Deep Purple please!
which guitarist? Ritchie or Steve
Ritchie Blackmore era even though i like Steve Morse
but they could do Both Deep Purple and Rainbow if they do Ritchie
William Allison agreed.
There is only one guitarist in Deep Purple. The day he left, it wasn't Deep Purple anymore.
Sounds like Ritchie Blackmore would probably be better.
I needed this episode
Well, you are welcome then... :-)
Nailed it. Love the reverend sound with the boost
Try and guess how many times Fro says,"It's worth pointing out," LOL! Love these guys, they always do a great job on these videos.
Please guys sound like Queensrÿche!!
they have to do Eyes Of A Stranger
I will never stop begging them to make Queensrÿche until they do them. Chris DeGarmo, Michael Wilton and Eddie Jackson are masters of the tone!
'Revolution Calling' would be a great song for Bea to get his teath into.
You gotta do some punk bands. NOFX, Pennywise, Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, etc.
I would love to see one on Propagandhi. The sound on How to Clean Everything is MASSIVE, even though it's really straightforward. haha, I guess the answer would just be to use a Marshall amp.
Lukey Pooky not a Mesa Dual Rec?
Really excellent sounds here, that Reverend sounds superb through the fuzzes
you did a great job in this episode, congrats!
Sound like metallica by busting the bank and now get the heavy rythm tones. From Creeping death ( RTL ) to Harvester of sorrow ( AFJA ). i love this show!!!
-1 for messing up the intro to "Cherub Rock". I totally thought you guys were phoning it in till Rabea pulled out the riff to "Quiet" as he was demoing the pedals. Way to throw in a deep cut Easter Egg for the hardcore fans :)
Word... Quiet has always been in my top 3 Pumpkins songs.
Quiet is one of their best songs
In what world is Quiet a deep cut? it's the second song on their most famous album...
Can I -1 for not adding the bend in the 1979 riff?
Sounds great guys, nailed it.
It's worth pointing out that you guys did a great job with this one
sound like dinosaur jr Please!!!
it's all about the fuzz, and the Marshalls and the J Mascis Squier which thy can get
Never clicked so fast.
Nailed it! Massive sound.
Sweet! Nice Job Guys!
Sound like Staind, only because I like me some Baritone droptuned guitars. Plus it would be cool to hear Bea rock out some old Staind tunes.👨🎤🤘
Weezer plz
OMG finally thanks so much guys
Well done, lads. Reminded me of one of the best times of my life.
If you want the true Pumpkins sound, you need the Op Amp version of the Big Muff really, but this does sound good! The good news is EHX just reissued it 😀
Phil Griffiths reissue doesn’t sound the same
The Altruistic Antihero JHS Pedals did a shoot out of all the reissues on their CZcams Channel. To my ear, they’re all nearly identical...especially the op amp version.
@@france.the_bastard Yes it does, I've owned both and the sound is indistinguishable.
Liked the video before watching it.. Keep up the mint work ladz! Weezer possibly up next??
Best show on CZcams! Keep going boys!
Thank you very much guys
You guys talking about octave and fuzz, you should do Baroness... been a while since you've done a proper metal/sludge/prog band
Could you guys make an Iron Maiden By busting the bank?
this time they should get Dave's Signature Fender Stratocaster and hopefully a Steve Harris bass rig
Oh, forgot to mention, great job on this one. Sounds pretty damn good.
Great job guys loved it!!!
If you guys could do a "Sound Like Dinosaur Jr." I'd love you forever :) they've had a bug influence on my music
Didn't they use fender lace sensor pickups?
Connor Balderaz Yes Billy did
yupp they did, but billy didnt like how the lace sounds for a clean tone because it loose a bit of articulation..
Connor Balderaz billy used to... but he later used signature DiMarzio single cool sized humbuckers.. now he uses the reverend, which he prefers.
Connor Balderaz yes but only in his strats
Thanks for that . Sound great
Nice job on this one 👍
sound like Sonic Youth
i know Thurston Moore has a signature Jazzmaster which they no longer make so a Jazzmaster is a shout straight away
but you can always get a Mustang or some regular Jazzmaster (cuz "they`ve played jazz" mostly, haha) and blast it with the screwdriver or drumstick!
i`m curious to watch guys playing sonic-tunes)))
1.Get any guitar
2.distortion pedal
3.set guitar on fire
that seems to be Hendrix-ish))
Yaroslav Ra Hendrix just destroyed a guitar he didn't explore the tonal capability of an enflamed jazzmaster
Closed Captions at 11:15 LOL! That sounds like my kind of guitar! XD
a lesbo custom
Thank you, guys! ;) You nailed it!
Finally! Awesomeness; pure awesomeness.
Anyone checked out Billy Corgan's Official Reverb Shop?? There's gear on there that I would do awful things to have. The Strat used on Today. The JMP-1s used on Mellon Collie. If you have $3Ok or more to spend, check it out.
eric johnson please
Noted...
Thanks for doing this one guys 😊😊 class video 👌👌👌👌
'I am one', great tune!! well done guys.
they play it wrong though, it should be 2 chords not 1 in the intro
My Mum said to me "You sound just like your father". Nailed that one then, I thought to myself.
Sound like Lil' Wayne please. I need to know how to sound like I just started playing guitar again.
Flip the guitar over and play off-handed.
Awesome work
love that pumpkins tone lately, awesome video. 🎸🔥🤘
Please do Sound Like George Lynch!!!!!
Dokken!
if Rabea can nail the In my Dreams solo i will totally watch it
CHERUB ROCK FOR THE WIN! and let me say you nailed this one!!!
can you do a sound like Mac Demarco?
he has a simple but fun rig
either him or George Benson (without using his signature gear cos they're expensive)
maybe even Hank Marvin of The Shadows
or A7X
and lemmie say while the DSL 40 is the big daddy of affordable Marshalls, i'm more sold on the Blackstar HT club 40 and for once i didn't just Pool out my usual requests and just narrowed it down to 3 cos Kai Burns says i do it EVERY TIME
DSL is hurt by what you said there...
Whoa that was awesome
Sounds great. Thanks
