      I personally think that's a weak argument. You could say that about virtually any industry. You pay for a car with cash? "You're benefiting off of the backs of people who are struggling to make their car payments." You get a good interest rate on your mortgage and pay it off early? "You're saving money off of the backs of people who are struggling to pay their mortgage / get foreclosed on"...

    • @libertarian4323
      @libertarian4323 Před 2 lety +22

      It's actually a really nonsensical and completely illogical point. If you fall for their reasoning (or lack thereof) here, then you also shouldn't collect interest on your bank account, because the bank only pays you interest because they make the money by making home loans, car loans, etc that "people struggle to pay back." They make an a la carte appeal to emotion with no logic behind it. Based on this kind of reasoning, our entire financial system shouldn't exist.

    This idea is BONKERS, but your in-laws clearly love you. You have 24 months, figure out what the trip is going to cost and pool the money monthly. You can get interest on the money just sitting there and then everyone can decide what their budget would allow. Have a family competition to see who can contribute the most or have the grandkids do a lemonade stand to help out. This guarantees you getting exactly what your family wants for this trip. "Points Programs" ALWAYS have fine print/stipulations/dates when/where you can use them. Why do you want the added stress?

    It’s a horrible idea, no question, and I often agree with John’s advice, but he went a little too holier than thou on this one. The problem isn’t the credit card system, it’s the people who use them irresponsibly. Do credit card companies LOVE people who overspend and make late payments? Yes. So, don’t do that. I’ve owned a credit card for 30 years and have never paid a penny of interest. Having said that, I’ll be darned if I’m going to feel guilty for using any points I earn because somebody else doesn’t know financial responsibility. The way you “don’t play the game” is to pay your card off in full every single month. I hate to sound harsh, but I’m not responsible for other people’s spending habits, and I’m not taking them into consideration when deciding on how to navigate mine.

If you *really* want to help them, search them out and subsidize a few. In the meantime, like everybody else, I have paid my share of interest in my younger years and now I'm in a position to nick the CC companies a few points. Yes, i'm going to do it. No, I'm not going on the guilt trip you're trying to lay on me (and others) for utilizing the rules to my advantage. Sorry I can't agree with you on this one. I sleep well at night also.

    This has to be a fake call. 1 million points would be like 10k depending on card. My card you would have to spend 500k. That would take me 25 years. Even if the guy has 8 kids this isn't going to be fast. A couple of years. I mean sure. Some cards give extra rewards for things like groceries. But groceries are cheap. I spend 2.5k annually on food. Even with a 5x on food it's 40 years. I feel like this was let through so they could make fun of credit card people instead of spend time on something educational.
    I do this stuff. But my trips are cheap. I like camping and adventuring. Some of my trips are like 100-200 for a full week. So my rewards either pays for a few trips or is additional into my investments. Im never delusional to think I'm pulling out a million points in a short window. This is absurd.
    I mean.. it is a fun thought experiment. And if it is real. Wish the guy good luck. But this feels more like a fake call.

      Any points/rewards/cash back card that "pays you back" only does so because a degree of its users let a balance accumulate. If everyone were disciplined enough to pay it off every month, I assure you that they would either cut back your rewards, or up the fees that they charge the merchants, possibly to the point where some merchants may not accept that particular card anymore. A lot of places don't take AMEX. Some don't even take Discover.
      Your "rewards" usually come from those merchant fees. Retailers them embed that expense in their prices and pass on to the customer, no matter how you pay.
      So yeah, if you're disciplined enough to pay it off every month and never use it for impulse buys, you might as well use the CC at the grocery store get the points.
      But I would never run every mindless purchase I could on a CC just for sake of racking up points, so I could get a trinkety reward back, just to spend even more money, when I could instead be investing that money.
