As the muscle cars were fading away, the manufacturers started offering some cool packages on their pickups and persuaded many to buy their first pickup . This Dodge was the best example of those pickups being offered being more than stripes and custom wheels with the unique wood trim, wood floor in the box and most of all those pipes that really set it apart. If you were around at the time you were very aware of these pickups and if you are seeing one for the first time here you will be impressed and become a fan. Gina is a smart lady. When she had an opportunity to learn about cars she did. To all the young people out there, learn as much as you can about cars and whatever as it will always pay off down the road. Thanks Gina and Lou for bringing this level of variety to My Car Story.

Thanks. Interestingly I bought my FIRST PICK,UP truck in 2007( GMC CANYON LE/2 W drive/4 CYL/ air/Cruise/AUTO/tilt/PS& PB/ tow / light package.....) first new Vehicle In Years, as my first “two”: 70 CORONET 383/loaded,; & 77 TRans AM Spec/ Hurst/loaded., were sort of PERFORMANCE...Actually, the 2007 CANYON was perfect size ( about half as big as the newer pick ups, reasonable mileage & price).. Now I kind of like the CYC,LONES, TRX, ETC. TRUCKS, BOTH big Regular, & the smaller trucks,

I think a Lil Red Express like Gina's is best owned by a Gen X'er or Boomer who knows how to adjust a carb, and has great memories of that era. I got my license in '87, and was a car crazed teen. Every time I saw a Lil Red Express on the road, I was salivating like a puppy, wishing I could afford one☺

I have I imagined THAT TransAm, with a lightweight recent Engine of some 500 HP, AS SOME Pontiac Engineers would have Really Built It!, The gas Crisis in 1974-80,etc : was a real, bummer on engines then: can imagine my 77 Trans Am , withsome of today’s engine/tires ( the FITTED UNiroyal P6 were barely OK)

Ha! This reminds me of the episode from the “Home Improvement” television show when Tim dropped the I-beam from the crane onto Jill’s ‘55 Chevy Nomad. At the end Jill wanted to fix the Nomad and keep driving it because, “These kids like to pull up next to me at a red light and rev their engines. Then I rev MY engine and waste them off the line!” I can imagine the “dislikes” will be from those young’ins in their coffee-can, Rice-burners who endured the same thing with this nice lady, until the lack of the aerodynamics of the truck took over!

Oh now that was fun and what a fun lady too! I so remember these trucks and the Warlock that was green too. When I bought my new 1979 Dodge Aspen SE there was one in the showroom floor. I wanted it soo bad but it was much more money than my loaded up Aspen SE. These trucks were sure head turners and I loved them soo much. I am so glad she got the truck she always wanted as they are very scarce in this kind of conditon. Boy that 360 engine really throws you back doesn't it Lou! Nice it had air and power steering and brakes and a nice stereo from the factory. Just a all around fun vehicle! Now that is really a keeper! Thanks for sharing Lou this was fun!

As a Dodge service tech when those trucks were new I can tell you a little about the emission standards for them. In 1975 EPA mandated catalytic converters on all cars and light trucks below a certain GVW. The 100 series trucks fell into this category. By increasing the GVW by 500 LBS. they were above the requirement. That's why in 1975 the 1500 series trucks came out. This was true for all of the big 3 manufactures. Dodge knew that starting in 1979 the government was going to raise the GVW requirement. So in 1978 they decided to have one last hurrah and built the little red express. By the way it was the fastest 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile vehicle produced by any domestic manufacture in 1978. The truck carried on into 1979 but had catalytic converters on it. If you noticed the emission decal on that truck said catalyst on it. The converters didn't slow it down that much as it was using the police interceptor engine.

I've always loved those trucks and this one is in such good condition. I was in my early 20's when this came out and it was a time of smog devices and low horse power. I think the pickups could get away with a little less of the junk on them and could put out more power. The stacks always made people look twice when they saw one. Ram should put the stacks on the TRX and make it really impressive.

The L code 360s had all the best parts that Chrysler had left and when found in trucks, really moved ( No ELBs. Cats were added on some to meet some states emission requirements). 1 of the fastest domestic vehicles you could buy in 79. Only the ultra rare 78s with the U code 440s were faster...

Fastest 0-60 in 1978 and 1979. Beat out the Corvette even! Yes they all were automatics and all had 360 EF1 police engine 225 Horsepower. Could order a 8 track or factory CB radio along with the AM/FM Stereo. Another fact is the red paint. 1978 had "Bright Canyon Red" paint and the 1979 had "Medium Canyon Red". A little darker red then 1978. Hood was different as well as the headlights. Single in 1978 and the quads in 1979. That steering wheel is unique to 1979, as the 1978 used the Tuff wheel.

LOL!!! "It's just a sexy truck," LOL!!!! Hell yeah. As a kid, with all the down sized cars, detuned engines, and Honda's invading the US car market, it was the last true hotrod on the road. These trucks were the fastest US production auto produced in 78 and 79. I was 12years old, when these hit the market and I was so pissed off when my Dad bought another boring Chevy Scottsdale. These trucks had it all: guys thought they were cool looking, girls thought they were "sexy" or cute, fast, and macho..... It summed up the time to a T. But then again, this might be the last true Chrysler innovation of the old school car engineers, until the Viper hit the road. I mean seriously, at the time, there was nothing on the road like it and custom trucks were not manufactured. Another Chrysler innovation they never got credit. Thanks Lou. Lots of good memories in one rig. Very cool.
