    Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. Now then, think of your typical Honda SUV buyer and I imagine you'll picture a sensible, pragmatic and practical person. Therefore, the new HR-V Sport may seem a bit...brash. This is a small SUV with big alloys, pumped up looks, glossy black detailing and a double exhaust, so it's clear it means business.
    It's able to back this up as well, thanks to a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol which offers 182hp along with 240Nm of torque (177 lb ft), meaning you'll hit 62mph in just under 8 seconds, and the top speed is 134mph. That's for the 6-speed manual however, you will lose a bit of performance if you go for the CVT. Power can only be fed to the front wheels, so those looking for AWD are going to be disappointed.
    You'll need somewhat deep pockets for the Sport, as it starts from £28,420, offering standard features such as 18" alloys, sport styling, rear privacy glass, double exhaust, LED lights both front and rear, 7" touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth, navigation, but NO smartphone connectivity, half leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual zone climate control, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors.
    When it comes to safety features, the HR-V Sport has got that covered, offering standard features such as 6 airbags, autonomous emergency braking, high beam assist, traffic sign recognition, and speed limiter. This was enough to secure the HR-V five stars from Euro NCAP, which is bound to give peace of mind for those looking to use the car to move the family about.
    Fuel economy, not a sexy subject, but an important one. As you would expect, this version of the HR-V is not going to be the kindest to your bank balance when it comes to consumption. On a combined run Honda states that this engine can offer up to 42.2mpg for the manual gearbox, and 39.2 for the CVT. When fitted to the manual, this 1.5 litre petrol emits 151g/km of CO2, whilst the CVT version emits 163g/km.

    Looks like a practical and 'warm' hatch on steroids. I like Honda, though and I would buy one of these for the combination of practicality and a bit of performance fun. Good video.

    Magic seats, where the seat base lifts up and locks in place to liberate floor to ceiling capacity no other rival has!

      It's really amazing. I think when you leave one up, from outside at night it can look the seat is missing, lol

    I've just had my car tax, sorry, road fund licence, come through for my Cr-v Hybrid. I must admit i was surprised at £135 for the year. My Mrs has a Cr-z, it's £20 a year lol. The Hr-v will be a fun car to drive though.

    Was really looking forward to this review. Great job as always. I test drove one of these. Fabulous engine! Manual gearbox all the way.

    Which manual gear boxes do you prefer in general, Honda or Ford? Also, does it depend on the specific model? For example, which do you like better, the Civic Sport 6-speed or the Ford Focus 6-speed?

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  Před 4 lety

      Oh, that's a good question. They're both very good to to be honest, but the only Civic I've driven is the Type R - I've never driven a standard Civic. So let's compare the Type R to the latest Focus ST, I prefer the Type R's change, but there's not THAT much in it. Thanks for watching.

    Does this HRV suffer with the oil and fuel issue seeing its the 1.5T version. or was this corrected on this model?

      Hello Ren, thank you for watching. I'm honestly not sure, I'd need to look in it and get back to you.

    How HR-V Sport compares to Suzuki Vitara Sport? Driving enjoyment and after all comfort.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  Před 4 lety

      Hi Biorkas, thanks for watching and for commenting. That's a bit tricky to answer as it's been a very long time since I drove the Vitara Sport (in fact, that model is no longer sold in the UK). From memory, the Vitara worked out to be better value, but the build quality wasn't quite as good as the interior looked cheaper than the HR-V. Both cars offer fizzy engines and fantastic gearboxes, but the Vitara was offered with 4WD, whereas the HR-V isn't. I also found the Vitara a bit more fun, a bit more characterful, with a better engine note. The Vitara also felt a little more nimble in the corners.

    Another fantastic review, informative and entertaining. Thank you! I am so frustrated with Honda.. I would almost certainly be driving one if only they could get their infotainment screens/systems sorted out and had slightly better spec such as electric tailgate and electric seats... similar issues with Toyota although I believe both brands now have CarPlay/android auto available (and I hear the new Honda Jazz has a vastly improved entertainment system)… Hopefully that will get moved into the HRV/CRV/civic very soon!

    Great review, thanks. The spec/engine set up at Honda is strange at the moment - unable to select top EX models with the top 1.5 turbo engine. As for the infotainment and missing spec enough said the better.

    If you buy the Honda HRV Sport WATCH OUT for engine oil dilution problems. The Honda 1.5 Turbo engine, Which is taken from the current Civic and CR-V, has been known to cause unburnt fuel to mix with the engine oil. This fact comes from a Honda fan.

    • @barryhudson6846
      @barryhudson6846 Před 3 lety +7

      This is a common trait of all direct injection engines not just the HRV Sport. This is merely scaremongering from other car manufacturers who are unable to attain the same performance and economy figures as this cracking engine. I have one. Don’t be put off!

    • @jdmguy44
      @jdmguy44 Před 23 dny

      Software tweaks by Honda fix this. However more importantly use the specific oil grade also as stipulated by Honda and this is a non issue. Every single direct injection engine will have some oil dilution in any case.

    I wish Honda would do away with these CVT gearboxes. Aside of the convenience of not having to change gear, it's worse on performance and economy (surely the point of a CVT is efficiency?), and probably quite annoying until it settles down. It'll also be around a grand dearer. The manually adjustable rear view mirror is peculiar given the price, and it doesn't look like you get either a wireless charging pad or any sort of modern USB charging ports, but safety does look to be strong, and the mirrors apparently tilt when you select reverse.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  Před 4 lety +2

      CVTs are a weird one as it's only really the Japanese that use them. And yes, the passenger side door mirror does tilt down when you select reverse - I did film that, but I could not find a way of putting the clip in to video without it looking shoehorned it. Thanks for watching Stephan.

      It makes choosing the manual gearbox in the Honda easier - as Aaron said, the Honda 6-speed is excellent, so it's not a chore to change gear, it's a real pleasure!

    • @paulrobinson3528
      @paulrobinson3528 Před 4 lety +1

      I used to work for Rover at Longbridge and used to drive the cvt's alot, 200/25 and 400/45 being Honda's underneath & hated them. Bought myself a Cr-v Hybrid with E-cvt and it's a world away from those, so nice but do think something like a VW dsg style box would be better. The only place really for a cvt is for cars doing straight line racing, the cvt always keeps the engine at peak power, not losing power between gear changes or waiting for the engine to get back to peak power for the next gear change.

      The CVT in my 2019 2L civic LX is pretty good actually. Cruises nicely in lover revs and plenty of torque delivery when punching it. Just have to get used to it. Also, btw. android auto and apple car play are standard on all 2019 2020 Civic, HR-V and CR-V in Canada. Great vid.

    Your review is spot on, this HR-V is dated and not the best ride quality unfortunately. Here in the States, they dropped the 6-speed manual option. It's a no go for me.

    We love that it doesn't have apple or android! The car doesn't literally need to BE a mobile phone! :)
