Mary Chapin's voice is like a good wine - the older, the better...
I've been looking for answers to two questions, and now have answered one. I wasn't sure who had written "Sometimes Just the Sky," but confirmed my guess it was Mary-Chapin Carpenter herself. I've also wondered about the lovely photography showing up on her site, pictures that show the beauty of her home and immediate surroundings. I'm pretty sure the answer is the same: Mary herself probably took those photos. For all of it, Mary thank you.

I am new to MCC. Someone shared a concert from home #BeMighty covid19 and I got into her you tube where I heard an interview about this song. She was inspired by an interview of Patti Smith who said that we can all be inspired by " sometimes just the sky." Lo and behold MCC was so inspired. I have always listened to Patti Smith and Joan Baez ; thanks to deep dive on you tube I see MCC connected to both of her sister artists . I am appreciating her even though I missed all these years. I am her age, but was not on the scene to catch her before. Newly grateful!

Many years ago my late wife Carol and I heard you singing Passionate Kisses on Radio Clyde. I was painting the back bedroom while she drove our 3 kids on a day out to Troon. First thing she said when she came home was " I heard this great singer singing Passionate Kisses ". Remember also your first visit to Glasgow standing at the side before an encore saying to yourself "Please please please".

This song is so amazing. It's helped me through the pandemic as well as others, but this is just damn flawless.
Listening to each song on this album tonight brings me to one sure thing that you have hit home these past 14 months...we are all connected to one another even though we may not truly know one another..perhaps just being under one beautiful sky. Life is a gift...have known that years back at a young age of understanding massive stroke recovery and what it takes to learn to speak and walk again. Having recognised and reported on it early, our scientists took quite the right step, but it caused a knee-jerk reaction of note internationally.
Sad sad times, indeed, as many plans for long overdue family visits have to be cancelled.
But it is First Advent Sunday, and that provides a bit of distraction! MCC's music, the DVD release, the news that the day book will enjoy a second print run - all that keeps inspiring me.
I hope that MCC's shoulder is mending well. 🙏

@@ursulamulder110 yes, today I will light the first 🕯 of the 4 as well while many friends will light their first candle on the 🕎 . We are all so very connected as MCC professes. Quite the community she has joined us all to. Amazing what sharing some reflections can spark when the 🌎 is facing global hardship.
Good to hear science has been ready for many variants since the spring/summer, but sad to see the knee-jerk reactions 'round the world when another variantis mentioned. Mass communications paints the worst picture to promote fear and worry. "No Fear" is a song I call up often along with her "Edge of The World" and play percussions along side with some African instruments I still keep in the house.
We are blessed to have MCC'S reflections out in print soon with such eye-catching photos and a 34+ year career documented in pictoral format for sure!!
Wonderful to check in on you and yes, photos from Instagram showed most of MCC's family home for their 🇺🇸 Thanksgiving fortunately and finally this year. Preparing some of the meal must have been good rehab for her injury and the soul. She just needed 2 hands to feature a bottle of their local VA winery's for their meal. 😉. Nice to see she was in the frame this year, as she is most always behind the camera. Looks like her little sis, Sophie may have been taking the shots this year. Wonderful to see how the kids are growing, and such beautiful smiles on them all. They are just good folk!!
Here's to having faith in ourselves and others so that hope continues to foster in us all Ursula, as we bring 2021 to a close and look to another year filled with " the great unknown" yet to be written for us all.

I was having the same thoughts, but didn't remember I had commented here, but thought you had. Deja vu (all over again!). My heart swells, my eyes fill by 3 minutes in. Good medicine. Good kind of satisfying sadness. Helpful to revisit and turn things over in admiration. A letting go process.
Ulla, there's an audio archive (that may have a video too) with a handful of interviews and some songs on the site of retired NPR host interviewer The Diane Rehm Show. (She knew Chapin's parent(s).)
I may delete the following in a week: Wednesday, I heard echoes of "concerts are coming back" from 2 other performers that made me balk with anxiety on the one hand, but curiosity overtook me. I checked Tangle wood, which seemed rescheduled from 2020 and then suspended until more definitive information on protocols 2021. Then I checked Wolf Trap. Not the same approach. There were still cancelled concerts in June. But then July started showing concerts from 2020 rescheduled to these 2021 calendars. Mary Chapin Carpenter was Aug 28, 2021 rescheduled from another day of Aug 2020. The tickets tab was blotto yesterday, but said starting at $30, but today tab was less visible and the words were gone. The concert ticketholders of 2020 will use their tickets. Hopefully, MCC will be fully vaccinated by then, but I do not know if that is ample time for the audience to be fully immunized. (Wildly trying to find an appmt myself and in a pipe dream, I checked getting there by $36, but covid on a 5 hr bus, argh.)
3/18/2020 to 3/21/2021 "Songs from Home" acoustic solo episodes by Mary Chapin Carpenter closing song choice was this same piece, "Sometimes Just the Sky." This is visually stunning and familiar from many photographs she has shared with people for the duration. It wasn't because of the bowed string orchestration, but "...filled up eyes..." indeed.

Same here. I liked her music then and thought that she was great. And she looked like she had a lot of fun doing it as well. Life got in the way and I have just recently re-discovered her. She is one of the best Singer/Song Writers out there. Period.

Just love her singing these soft thought provoking soothing lyrics and melodies. I could listen to her for hours. Her concert in Wis. last July , too short. I liked to hear her sing all these soft beautiful song in a concert in a small intricate venue. Just Mary and the audience and peace.

This song to me is a summation of MCC’s career. It would have been a wonder to have a video showing this specific style of recording and to see this special musician showing that side of her creative performances.
