What do you think is the best flower for the window box?

- I realized that the window boxes I made this time would be more convenient if they were removable. Also, this would be fun to decorate seasonally. Anyway, you never know unless you try everything.
This place is part of my homestead.
The animals (LAMP, YONA, and GWIN) stay in the main house, except when I bring them here occasionally. They don't sleep curled up together, but they don't fight and keep a good distance from each other.
This is not a how-to video.
The method I'm using is not necessarily the right one. Nowadays, you can find out the right way to do things by searching on Google. If you only want results, that's fine too.
But for me, the most important thing is not whether a method is right or wrong, but to experience firsthand why it succeeds or fails.
All work is done personally and at my own risk.

Hello Brooke I say plant Impatiens in a swath of multi colored hues. One of the most vibrant annuals recommended for growing and thrives in shade! Impatiens are also perfect additions for window boxes and large containers. An array of almost any colour imaginable are guaranteed to light up any dull area of your garden and great for window boxes. 😁👍

May I suggest you line your box with heavy plastic so you don’t end up with water and soil draining out of your pots? Prevents rotting the wood. I learned the hard way.

Pansies! not too big, different colours and flowers for a long time
I just love the charming home you've built for yourself. Petunias, geraniums, zinnias, nasturtiums, and begonias are good choices for main-theme flowers. Fill in with things like inch plant, ivy, euonymus, heather, or vinca, which will cascade over the edge of the box. Impatiens do well in shady locations. More subtle choices include coleus, heliotrope, and salvia.
I truly enjoy watching your videos! You do such beautiful work. It is a pleasure to watch you continually build, and improve upon, your homestead, which fits so beautifully and naturally into the surrounding area. The window box and shutters are lovely, and make the cabin look wonderfully homey. As for the question of what to plant in the window box, I'd turn it into miniature herb garden with maybe some lemon balm, chamomile, and other smaller size tea and medicinal herbs. I think it might be nice to have such a little garden right there so close upon the kitchen area.

le dernier plan, sur votre fauteuil en bois, à coté de la petite fenêtre est très réussi et donne une bonne idée de toutes vos réalisations ( : rembarde en bois, fenetre, jardinière, fauteuil, ect...)! à la semaine prochaine!

Having Swiss heritage myself, I always enjoy spotting the Swiss things you have. For flowers, I would choose pansies for the cooler seasons and red geraniums during the heat of summer. Some white alyssum with the geraniums would be nice.
Bearing in mind that the cat will be on and in that window box and it will always be shaded, I like the idea of pansies but have to put my foot and trowel down over white alyssum. Quite frankly, it smells like cat urine. lol Mini trailing violets would be another hardly shade lover. I would also go crazy with spring bulbs.... snowdrops and mini daffs do great in shady areas.
@@l.m.2404 You're right that some varieties of alyssum have putrid smells! I should have been more specific and said "sweet alyssum" which is called that because it smells good.
Good point, WV Blue. Rockcress is another great choice and is edible. Cheers.

I like the final touches to the window… and the addition of the window box… this season I had Nasturtiums on my patio… for the first time… very pretty orange-ish and yellows… I also like snapdragon and petunias… but whatever colors or type of flowers you like will look nice in the flower box… again… nice job 👍!!!

Definitely pansy! For a smaller version, viola is wonderful. Short version of snapdragon is also great for colder temperatures.

Glad to see that you added a strip of wood to the shutters (wouldn't have been functional without it). 2) From now on I will only plant eatable flowers and plants. Because who knows how far the big greedy industries will go with the artificially made shortages in the future.

Hi there! I would use blue and yellow flowers that would live in the shade. That way, with the red shutters, you have all three primary colors.🐝🤗❤️

Such a beautiful flower box! Very nice touch. Gwin absolutely adores you, and wants to be a part of all that you do. Such a sweet chatterbox. He has much to discuss with you.
As for what I’d plant for the window box… Well, it’s too far up to plant catnip for Gwin, so that would have to be in a ground planter box right below the window box. In the window box some red and white geraniums, because they are cheery. Then a few forget-me-nots to let those I love know they will always be remembered and held within my heart. This I’d accent with some twining ivy vine that tells how love grows. Inside among the flowers for some whimsical cheer I’d set a small flat topped rock and then I’d place a cat figurine that looks like Gwin on top of the rock. Peeking out of the midst of the flowers I’d place a dog figurine that looks like Lamp.

Going with your colors of white, burgundy and nature green all around your house. Japanese fern Athyrieum nipponicum "Burgundy" wihich is zone 3 to zone 9. Blooms from spring to autumn. To add flowers, the Pellargornium x hortorum would be easy and fun. White, red whatever color you like but the best part is you can do cuttings. Just leave the cuttings in water until it roots and you multiply your flowers all year long. No matter what you choose, it will be beautiful.

The dianthus will be good for a while. They like cold. Great window box plants for spring are wax begonia and asparagus fern. Pink are more vigorous. Red and white grow smaller.

Tuberous begonias in a deep red would be nice. Begonia boliviensis 'Mistral' series are awesome for containers. They love shade and bloom continuously until the cold weather. Easy to grow.

As a true swiss guy, I would say that geraniums would be the best flowers to put there!
How about lavender, sage and thyme? The color, fragrance and the culinary properties would be a nice addition!

Plectranthus, also called 'velvet elvis', they grow in shade, your box doesn't look like it will get much light.

If your porch is as shady as I think it is, you may not be able to grow flowers in the window box. Also, closing your shutters will be an issue with flowers in that box.
