    Susan Maher, you are ABSOLUTELY spot on, I have been in racing all my working life. While I have so much respect for all the wonderful great NHR recent champions. The true great was ABSOLUTELY ARKLE, I was privileged to witness many of his wins m, it was ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING, that in many of the big handicaps, he was asked to carry between 12 and 13 stone, and OBLITERATED the opposition, the the 4 times he thrashed the great MILL HOUSE was ASTONISHING, I have never ever witnessed any horse sprinting up the Cheltenham and Sandown hills With the speed of a sprinter

    Oaksey wrote a wonderful piece on one of Arkle's rare defeats when he was carrying huge weight. ""Head low, dog-tired, giving 32lb to one rival and 26lb to the other, Arkle gained ground up the Cheltenham hill. With everything against him, he never for one moment thought of giving up and even now, shutting my eyes, I can see the angle of his out-thrust neck with every nerve and sinew strained to the limit and beyond."

    One things for sure, 1965 was the most special year in racing history. It was the year of the greatest Chaser of the 20th Century (Arkle) and the greatest flat horse (Seabird). What a privilege and honour it must have been to be a race fan in those years! :)

    • @leehackett1614
      @leehackett1614 Před 7 lety +1

      05PtVxUI
      Basically, a hurdle race is where horses jump over hurdles (unsurprisingly) and a chase is short for steeplechase, where horses run over fences.
      Hurdles are the smaller objects as they have to be a minimum of three-and-a-half feet high, whereas fences must be a minimum of four-and-a-half-feet high.
      Also the term Novice is most likely used because many horses will compete in hurdles to start with and then go onto fences as chases are usually the stronger encounters and as the horse gets a bit older it requires more of a jumping technique as their speed might not be what it was, so they’re likely to switch to fences.

A horse rising 6lb in the ratings is like Usain bolt getting handicapped with a 30 gram chocolate bar strapped to his body. Small rises don't make too much difference. 6lb to a 500lb beast isn't much, 10 or 12lb isn't either.

    Yes he was a good horse. But as all of us were not around at that time how can a comparison be made between golden miller and arkle. golden miller won the Cheltenham gold cup 5 times carrying top weight and in between he won the grand national. What else has to be taken into consideration is the style of fences I believe up until the 50.s the fences were straight upright as was the grand national and the distances were further. For a horse to jump an upright fence takes a lot of courage because the horse will take off at the distance that the fence stands at. e.g. 4ft fence horse takes off 4ft from the fence and lands 4ft on the other side, if however you have a sloping fence the horse can get to the bottom of the fence because the slope makes it more comfortable for the horse to jump. So do give golden miller his proper title which should be one of the greatest steeple chasers along with arkle.

      There was one horse shipwrecked off ireland who swam about 50miles to get to land. Some people found the horse contacted the authorities and the trainer went and collected the horse which went onto win the grand national in 1904. The horses name was moiffa and was on route from new zealand. I believe in 1901there was another shipwreck in which two horses were involved one survived the other did not. I am not sure that moiffa is the horse who had to swim to get to the national and then take part. I have to do more research.

Why Timeform rates him as the best ever (I have to say that this particular accolade is a bit of a stretch as Golden Miller should also be on the same mark.)? All the horses you have mentioned are greats in their own way but, and this is where Arkle excelled, none of them were ever able to match his achievements in handicapped races.
