Can someone explain to me how UIL works as far as advancing. I am not from Texas and where I am from we don't really have a "state" per say. I've always been intrigued in how UIL works

Bands are broken down into conferences from 1A-6A. At the regional level, bands get a rating from 1-5 with “1” being the best and “5” being the worst. On odd years bands in conference 3A and 5A that get a “1” advance to the Area Marching Contest. On even years, bands in conference 2A, 4A and 6A that get a “1” advance to area.
At the area Contest, there’s a preliminary round and a final round. Bands are ranked according to a point system. Depending on how many bands are in an area, they’ll take the top 7 or top 10 bands to the final round; and then at the final round, they’ll take the top 2-6 bands to state
On odd years, any 1A band that gets a “1” will advance to state since there aren’t that many 1A bands

Doge from San Antonio, great job of breaking it down! Now let's go a little bit further... at each Area contest, that area is guaranteed 2 bands to go to state, even if the highest rating given at the region level is a 2! then, for every 5 bands at the area contest, you add one more band going to State. so, if you have 25 bands at area, your area is guaranteed to send 5 bands to State! (See Area C)
