Years ago Zoe Saldana played Nina Simone in a horrible movie that didn't even touch the surface of her known experience, lingered on addiction and gave her a horrible prosthetic. Is this how they saw her? Zoe was happily talking about her pride at playing a gritty role... This was a WHOLE REAL PERSON! Who hadn't even been dead long, Zoe has since apologized.
And this is why I hate biopics and rather watch the documentary.
OMG same!! I have OFTEN said i prefer a great documentary vs a biopic because the latter are usually simply vehicles for the main actor/actress.

Several years ago, I would have thought Billy Porter would have been a great fit for a James Baldwin biopic. But I too have had concerns about him playing this role, given his willful ignorance of Black leftist and socialist ideas, and an understanding of global oppression. I see the same thing happening to Bayard Rustin. His Communist Party history is being overshadowed by emphasizing his queerness.
My first trip to Europe was in 2008, and one of the first places I wanted to visit was St. Paul de-Vence, precisely because James Baldwin settled there. But the reason that his legacy is having the rough edges so to speak worn off is because neoliberalism loves to co-opt and redefine.
This is just a reminder that we need to keep educating and radicalizing our brothers and sisters. Because if it’s not Billy Porter, it’s someone else. No, let’s keep talking about James Baldwin. We need to keep talking about him _accurately_ and not co-signed by the very people who will not advance for the masses of us.
And if you’re burned out from educating, just stop. Let someone else you’ve taught do the teaching. There’s enough of us.

I read this interview a few weeks ago and was appalled about his ignorance of James Baldwin's actual politics and activism. Billy is going to wear box braids and hoop earrings all through this flick.

The best biopics about artists I’ve seen in recent years are about European men. I recommend watching “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain”. This movie should be the standard for biopics. The movie gives life to a deceased artist. “ At Eternity’s Gate” and the most well known “Loving Vincent” are incredible at showing the inner life of Van Gogh . This is what I want for James Baldwin and other black icons. A movie that encapsulates the essence and values of an artist, portrayed by an actor who truly has inhabited the mind of the subject. A stylistic, expressive auteur film that is done as if the diseased subject is taking part in the film making process.

I appreciate your take and the amount of effort and time you put into this content and I respect the way you have educated yourself. I'm a woman that realized I was queer very late in life but I always felt I related to Baldwin. I used to listen to his debates, talks and speeches and they often gave me strength. I hate when a revolutionary is trivialized down to some little cute key chain when their presence alone helped change the world. Billy Porter playing Baldwin is giving, "I know someone black and not straight, he'll be a fit!" I think biopics deserve actors that the public isnt familiar with, so the focus can be on the actual artist being featured. I think when the actor can actually relate and has done the deep diving the connection to the role is ASTRONOMICALLY BETTER than when they haven't. If Billy's beliefs differ so greatly what's the point of him taking on the role? I dont get it. It's def erasure if his project doesnt include the WHOLE truth!

I can't with Billy
I am not as familiar with Baldwin's legacy and wirk as you are but to me, looking 1t the entirety of Porter's justifications and thought processes as to why he is qualified for this artistic endeavor, it seems that3he confused being revolutionary with being driven and sassy. Sass isn't subversion. I'd trade a boring person with revolutionary ideas and political struggles over a sassy capital peon.

How much of Leemings biography is a literary analysis of Baldwin's work? Specifically, is it better/necessary to finish reading Baldwin's full catalogue of work before reading the bio?

Ok i have a lot to express about what I just watched.
First, I have to say Billy is a very smart man, educated, and is extremely culturally competent. I don’t think it’s fair to give an opinion based off of click bait information with limited context. I don’t think it’s fair to give an opinion with baseless information because 1. The film isn’t complete 2. You haven’t seen the script for the biopic (I’m assuming you have not read it) 3. You haven’t had an actual sit down conversation with Billy. I recognize and applaud you for being young, black, queer, cultured, a James Baldwin curator, and a published author. However, as of now your argument is based purely on assumptions and the little information you know about Billy and the project. To add, your critique has a tone of ownership and gate keeping when speaking to your sole experience with James Baldwin’s life and legacy. Your use of academic jargon in your video comes across a bit pretentious and a few points you made seems a bit self-serving? I feel there’s a place to have a critical discussion after you’ve read the script and/or seen the finished product but I feel you’re getting ahead of yourself here. The history, research, and time that Billy has done and is doing to give this biopic justice, is unknown to us. How about reach out to Billy personally, have a conversation with him, discuss his in depth approach to the Biopic and maybe if you feel the story that Billy is writing is displaying cultural erasure, then offer to help him get to the nuances in the story. Your video feels mean and that may not be your intention but that’s what I felt before making it to the 17:00 mark of your video.
Now this part raised an eyebrow: you called out Billy for actively participating in capitalism but around the 24:00 mark of your video you’re promoting your book? That comes across a bit toned deaf and hypocritical. That was just my reaction to what I watched.
At the end of the day, let’s find some solution based interventions instead of erasing and canceling people who are honestly making their best effort to do some good in this world.
How will we contend with the reality that a lot of people’s best efforts, intentions, or actions aren’t good enough, and could be actively detrimental to what they earnestly wish to support?
It IS a failure of Porter, script available to us or not, to wave away discussions on the ongoing land theft and g3nocide of Palestinian people. He could have easily cited Baldwin if he himself felt ill-equip or even the reality of self preservation as a Black queer man. But he didn’t. Instead, he walked the line of desiring to honor a Black queer intellect while stripping us from hearing that intellect.
Similar to the Fred Hampton movie, there is something to be said about the movie capturing the reality that a young black man and his community members were hunted and he, murdered, for feeding people. But the movie made it seem like it was all because of a select few boogeyman that aren’t in power anymore instead of a purposeful (and continued) ethos of the United States to kill revolutionary care and caregivers.
Don’t let up on him!

Following his legacy to a T makes you a fan with access if anything, your no more qualified than him, who I never been a fan of. But I do respect your reverence for James Baldwin, still irritating to hear black gay men only support him because he was a black gay man. Just finding out about him in college is wild! But you seem to have done your homework, honorably! I’ll never see Billy as an influential person on the level of provoking thought on any social level. He dresses ridiculous as a form of expression yes but also as his form of political expression. No real person highlighting social inequality is going to mark themselves to NOT be taken seriously, as James Baldwin was well beyond respected! They’re just two total different representations of black, two different representations of gay, two different representations of manhood. If Porter was sincere he would look at casting an actor who could inhabit the subject more fully. I feel he's virtue signalling and unfortunately I fear it will be another wasted opportunity like the Nina Simone Zoe Saldana- prosthetic nose fiasco.
