They're intelligent in really incredible ways. Sea Lions remind me more of dogs. Obviously, they're still wild animals, so it's never a good idea to approach one that isn't accustomed to humans. Dolphins (almost all cetaceans really) have an almost human-like quality to them in how curious and socially/emotionally intelligent they are. They're among my favorite animals.
I live in San Diego so grew up with our Sea World here, which I love for its smaller size and more "accessible" feel, but some of our exhibits leave much to be desired. Orlando, however, really blows the other Sea World parks out of the water, no pun intended…excellent exhibits, size, variety, as well as theming, combining ride queues with exhibits, and various interactive things. That’s not to say Sea World SD and Texas fail, cause they don’t… even here, it may be a smaller park but SWSD does a lot behind the scenes as far as local, Southern California marine animal welfare and rescue. God knows there are a lot that need help here. From cetaceans and pinnipeds to sea turtles and birds. A I don’t know about the other SW parks, but here, SWSD is also a regional center for rehabbing marine animals from all over SoCal, from as far north as Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, at least. From there, animals generally go to Monterey or other facilities.. If other rescue centers are full or lacking the tools needed, they’ll often ask SeaWorld to step in. So apart from the orcas and the _Blackfish_ controversy, and the fact that keeping large cetaceans in captivity is highly questionable… yeah, SW is not entirely evil. Lol.
I haven't been to Seaworld in over a decade, and my strongest memories are from the 2 overnight 'youth camp' experiences I did sometime in the late 00's. We slept in the Shark exhibit one year and the Arctic exhibit the other, and I remember the wonder of seeing the belugas with the lights off
Very much hoping San Diego gets some of these upgrades. Orlando’s sea lion, shark, dolphin, and penguin exhibits are vastly superior - I want SeaWorld’s OG park to have some of this treatment.
