Seed Processing

  • October at Johnny's Research Farm means it's time to finish the harvest and process seeds. This video shows how seed is extracted from pumpkins and peppers.
The process is fairly straightforward. Fruits, in this case, pumpkins are gathered and pulverized. The seed is separated from the pulp by use of machine called a vine harvester, which is essentially a giant food mill. The seed is then cleaned, rinsed off with water and taken to the drier where it is heat-dried for about a day.

Pepper seed extraction is basically the same, but a much smaller machine is used. Johnny's farm employees previously extracted pepper seed by hand, but this new machine makes the job much easier and faster.

AlexGreenDrums The machine is a Vine Seed Harvester that was built here on Johnny’s Farm. It was patterned after vine seed harvesters common in the western states during the middle part of the 20th century. Small machines like this are not made any more although there are a handful of machine shops that will make one.

Functionally speaking, if one were to put wine grapes, specifically the pomace, ( the skin holding the seed inside once the grape is smashed at a winery), would you be able to put that in there to get the same results? Long story short is it compatible with wine grapes? Thank you!

Tim MacDougall Hi Tim, Functionally speaking, the vine harvester is basically a backwards food mill in that the seed comes out into a reservoir and the flesh and pulp get expelled out the end as waste. The seeds then continue their processing in a machine called a "coner" which basically washes the remaining pulp residue from the seeds. Both pieces of equipment are PTO driven and require a constant flow of water. The vine harvester consists of a chop-per, rotating screen drum, and seed reservoir with a gate. The "coner" has a cone shaped screen and water chute. Our Assistant Farm Manger, Becky, provided the basic information and if you have more specific questions, she would be happy to talk with you. Her email address is btraylor@johnnyseeds.com.
