Mike Brewer made a two parter about her while she was in Afghanistan. Well worth a watch.
It's pronounced "O DEE UM" I was stationed there , flying Vampires.
Were they god/fun to fly
@@user-tc5bj4cd1i Yes, it was a nice little jet. No GPS or autopilot and of course no ejector seat!
By today’s standards the Vampire was fairly primitive, but it had a superb view and felt cosy and welcoming.
Thank you for spelling how to pronounce the word Odiham properly for the original poster. I was about to do the same. I was stationed there as an Engineer on 27 Sqn Chinooks 1998 to 1999 and absolutely loved the station.
@@Martinspans I was there a bit before you. My last trip was at the end of August 1951 when my National Service stint ended. Yes, it was a very nice station.
A colleague of mine actually used to fly these for a living and another colleague who was an instructor on these. Amazing!!! The only thing they pointed out was on the UK variant, the uk models have a bubble glass on the most rear windows. Other than that...they both agreed it's a really well done job
Could not resist the force ! Downloading now. Thanks for the video and first review
Let us know how you get on, where and how you fly and what your thoughts are too!
Excellent, as always ! Thx mate
Welcome! 🙂
Can't wait to fly it in DCS.
This is keeping me at bay until the DCS one comes out
wow, amazing CH47D chinook video
Excellent video! Currently downloading ...
How do you find it so far? 🙂
@@BritishAvgeek Pretty nice! Will be interesting to see what they can do with the new twin rotor flight model in SU15. At the moment it feels a bit sterile, and gauges like the torque indication do not really work.
Excellent video. What an amazing machine. In another life I would love to have been a pilot or part of a Chinook team. Awesome!
Yeah that'd have been epic!
Picked it up ,this should be fun ,another helicopter to get my head round👌
Enjoy!
Been up in those for real a few times with the Army. Back wash is pretty powerful when getting off.
Was nice and warming too when waiting to load up in Brecon :)
@@sketchy74 seen a few new recruits getting bowled over when their Bergan catches the backdraft. Once you know what to expect it doesn’t happen though. Best seat at the back low level with the ramp part way open, awesome view.
Great video! I will have to wait for my chance...Xbox on my desk.. I flew the "B" "C" and "D" models. This will bring back some great memories for sure. I noticed they left out the shakeing cockpit...they had a constant vibration going on..would be annoying on the sim I guess. Great Job!
Yeah probably would be odd in the sim
My absolute favorite helo. They fly around my house as well and you’re right, very distinct rotor sounds.
Osprey Cargo - Heavy Lift Division.
That would be epic! Won't beat some of the RAF Callsigns though like Doughnut 😂
How cool would it be to see a group flight of Osprey Cargo Chinooks lifting off at the same time, enroute and then coordinated landings. EPIC or Carnage! 😂 Can these be used on Vatsim?
@@copper_115 we were discussing this loosely in the Club Lounge members section of discord earlier 😂 providing they aren't military ops, and we fly VFR yes they can be used but it's a bit of a grey area 😅 I might be planning some sort of Chinook group flight next week...
I am a uk army cadet and I was lucky to fly in one it still is the best day of my life
Wus it loud?
@@pricelessppp yes very loud
Thanks for the great video! I was pretty sure I would pick this up but was waiting for one good overview before I did, off to buy it now!
Hope you enjoy it, do check back in and let us know how it's going!
@@BritishAvgeekHaving great fun so far. Certainly an interesting heli to fly, big and heavy so lots of momentum to manage, but also incredibly stable.
I managed to pick up the Humvee twice but both times broke the sling and rained a Humvee down onto the desert below 😬.
I'll have to check out the manual, I'd guess I was going faster than the limits of the hoist/sling.
Done many a trip in these beasties, although I never saw one this clean lol
😂 last time I was stood in the back of one there were some leaky oily pipes
@@BritishAvgeek par for the course right. Never saw one without something broken or inop either but the RAF boys just kept flying anyway.
It'll do a trip Doug 😁
Used to support 7 Squadron Chinooks from Odiham ( pronounced OhDeeham ) as a tac comms wing radio operator based at RAF Brize Norton in the 80s. Flew around Catterick in the left seat frequently...loved it.
Nice overview, I’ll have to take a closer look although the DCS version looks to be the one for me. This model looks ok although there’s quite a few differences in cockpit layout, seems to be an old US version, also noticed it has no rotorbrake? The forward cabin door looked to be huge! I would like to see it being thrown around a bit at low level that’s where the real fun starts. The bit that pops out of the ramp is called the ‘tongue’ and all Chinooks, Puma, Apache etc. are only ever called CAB’s never Helo, thanks for the video mate!
CH47Ds (US Variants) do not have a rotor brake IRL. Instead, the weight and friction of the blades is enough to bring the rotor to a full stop.
Hey guys thanks for the reply, yes rotorbrakes tend to be a UK thing, I guess the skins are more cosmetic that functional. You'll be please to know I've downloaded a copy and will have a good look over it soon. Quick one, there's no EAPS fitted but you've configured the start such that the switches need to be on? @@miltechsimulations
Does hdg alt hold work yet or not until su 15?
It only flashes yellow when I try to engage and does noting
Great video. How do you shutdown? I can’t seem to stop the propellers. Haven’t seen a video showing this. After a flight it would be good to finish the complete shutdown. Thanks
Condition levers to shut off.... The blades take quite a few minutes to slow down and stop
Great thanks for the quick reply 😊
That ramp area is way to clean lol
The D model actually had early gps in the mid 80’s 90’s
Looks fantastic. I might have missed it but what airfield did you start at with all the other Chinooks?
RAF Benson 🙂
@@BritishAvgeek Thanks. I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford.
Learned the hard way. Don’t run straight out the back, the exhaust will get ya crispy.
😂😂😂😂
Looking forward to this girl releasing on DCS also :)
Me to....probably ages away
I bet that'll be great fun!
Would love to do a group flight with some people
How can I get the Chinook to start "cold and dark" at tha airport? When I choose one of the airports that are with teh heli, it is always have the motors running!
Have you tried shutting them off, waiting for the rotors to stop then turning battery etc off before going back to the menu and respawning?
That may be the oddest pronunciation of Odiham I have ever heard!
Must be my midlands twang... We can rarely pronounce anything right 😂
Oh boy. Look at that! Nearly died on one once… a must have! 😂
😂 that's a story I'm interested to hear!
My biggest handicap at the moment is seamless navigation in the cockpit. What do I need to do or buy to achieve? Thx in advance
Old school charts and logs really, or use the GPS toggle in the EFB to toggle a little GPS unit on the centre console to appear for you
@@BritishAvgeek Ty. Sorry, by navigation I meant looking around the cockpit as well as the rest of the aircraft when modelled. Drone camera doesn't cut it. Thx
@@Mimiclobster oh when flying, I just have a keybind set to my right mouse click so when I click and hold, I can use Free Look to move my "head" around
Thank you. Will give this a try.
The correct pronunciation for the RAF Base Odiham is (O-DEE-HAM) and said without a break.!!
Why for a new sim has it got the old Mk2 cockpit? Project Julius included the Thales 4 multi function displays and a whole bunch of cockpit upgrades and that was back in 2013!
I'm not the developer so I have no idea. Probably easier to code the older one with analog displays than deal with digitisation
The new Glass Displays are for the most part still classified, very documentation is available, which makes it difficult to develop accurately.
We may consider a Glass Cockpit expansion in the future, if we manage to get enough data.
This is a rendition of a CH47, D variant, and as such all instruments are analog.
RAF Cosford also has a 4deg offset, but it is where most tri-service helicopter pilots get their training.
I'd have thought it was Shawbury? Interesting though thanks for sharing!
@@BritishAvgeek yes I meant Shawbury, but Cosford, Shawbury and Turn Hill all function as one in respect to tri-service helicopter pilot training, but yes Shawbury is the one with 4deg offset.
Did my trade training at RAF Cosford in the mid 80s. Fond memories.
@@coffeeguy6673 nice! I spent age 13-19 there as a weekend warrior for the air cadets 😂
Live next to RAF cosford and i can assure you the only heli that flys in and out is the air ambulance , there is basic flight training here in the vigilant fixed wing trainer and that is nowhere near as common these days .Shawbury is the main heli training base , couldnt comment on turn hill not round there much but i believe its an army barracks .
what are you using for control peripherals?
of all things, the boeing tca yoke and a honeycomb bravo with some thrustmaster tflight rudder pedals
@@BritishAvgeek hehe, almost the same setup as me. i find it difficult to control helo's and wondering if it's worth upgrading.
Nice video! Thank You. 👍 Where I can download this scenery?
Benson? FlightSim.to
Odiham is included in the Chinook payware package
Thx! @@BritishAvgeek
I'm hoping developers will create some weathered textures. The default external textures are too unrealistically new looking.
The noise is why it is called a "woka"
Everytime I try and taxi it just lifts off. How do I stop it and actually taxi?
Dear god, It's pronounced Oh-dee-yum dude.
ZA718 (Bravo November) has been retired, she lives in the museum at RAF Cosford. It is open to the public, if you wish to visit.
Depends where in the country you ask 😂 oh-dee-ham is how I've always known it but then I'm from the midlands 😅
ex RAF myself and worked supporting the Chinook squadrons from Odiham , I picked up on British Avgeeks pronunciation but I think we can forgive him , great video. Liked n subbed.
@@coffeeguy6673thanks please do 😂 you haven't heard me try and pronounce other places across the globe yet 😬
@@BritishAvgeek I’ll defend you, my mum still says Burn-ing-han and refuses to say Birmingham. Lol. I live on Guernsey, where most of the regions are in old Guernsey French. Believe me it took me years to pronounce most of them properly and I do feel sorry for visitors to the island who are never too sure to say a name in French, English or a mixture of the two 😅
@@andrewharper4296 😂😂 brilliant
I think Odiham has a silent h, I used to live there.
A new update will be available on March 10 or Monday
Oooh nice!
I used to drink when I flew too... now I'm a Penguin
not a goose?
Do they have a good safety record?
well, they'd had issues but they're a proper work horse and keep going. Check out that story of 'BN' that I mentioned, it's remarkable!
Will it be easy to handle on an Xbox controller ?
Not sure as I don't have a controller to test with
The cockpit looks nice but am I the only one who thinks - yes the CH47 is amazing, but I'm not sure if this simulation of the H47 is all that impressive...
What do we think of how it flies?
Doesn’t shake enough on start, shame it doesn’t have a minigun hanging out the door and the rest of the flare packs for Bosnia spec
Vibrations coming up in a future update.
as soon as i switch on the battery, the blades also start spinning? can anyone help me?
Hmm I've not experienced that myself yet but I'll click about
@@BritishAvgeek i just asked in the miltech discord server, its a hardware issue. fixed now tho thankfully!
I wish it had appropriate helicopter pilot avatars for the interior and exterior views. Feels odd to not see an appropriate pilot in the opposite seat when in the cockpit view. Just as disappointing to see default Asobo pilots in the external view.
This is being improved in today's update - we are adding custom pilot models.
How is the physics? I've heard DCS and X-PLANE has better Heli physics.
It won't be like DCS naturally... But otherwise nice enough and as good as it can be. Don't forget, tandem rotor support is coming soon native to MSFS too
its not vibrating enough
Was thinking the same, hopefully I can use fsrealistic to improve this somewhat.
flew in them alot in the 80s and crikey they shake and with the slap of the rotors you know you're in it !!
Hi! It'll be interesting to see what comes of future updates - might be perhaps tough in MSFS to replicate without making people feel weird with the screen shaking about while trying to fly it 😂
@@BritishAvgeek I've never flown in a Chinook but I have in a Wessex and Sea King. They vibrate a lot, so a Chinook will be no different.
Even Hawks have a fair bit of vibration at max chat down a Welsh valley. Seen it, done it.
Would be awesome to have a hydraulic seat setup for this that includes the vibration.
We hade some in Swedish airforce but equipment with sonar and another stuff for hunting submarines
Nice, bet they had a cool callsign!
You are referring to the CH-46 Sea Knight, used here in Sweden for hunting Russian submarines during the cold war in the 80s.
@@Yuushiboy they hade 2 version of Boeing Vertol 107
Like how they forget Xbox exist 😂 can't even fix the bugs on xbox let alone bring any new aircraft that is worth flying it's always for PC that is ignorant.
Sadly it's an entirely different experience on Xbox and tbh I think Microsoft just saw it as a way to make a few more million bucks. So many people experience CTDs on Xbox because it can barely handle the load MSFS demands on the system - which is why so much stuff comes out for PC and not on xbox
Profile name checks out.
Agree with Luke. Fact is, if you want to flightsim you NEED a pc. On another note, my sister’s bf was a CH47 pilot based Odiham. He was a v strange guy; completely unlike any other pilot and/or forces personnel I have ever known…idle thoughts for a Friday

Coming shortly. Had to buy direct from Miltech. Not yet on Marketplace.
I have a hard time to get the load sling up.
In what sense?
