I used to drive one in the 90's.. in my early 20's as Sea Food Delivery Person
I can tell you that throttle is just a switch either the throttle is closed or it's wide open 😂
and you gotta let the engine rev real hard because it simply cannot handle steep hills with cargo
real fun to drive! good fuel economy..tight turning radius gets the job done
pretty reliable piece of kit.. it's been 30 years and I still see that good old Suzuki delivery van in the streets!
I thought it was a live commentary of WWII. 😂
Just to add some info from someone who bought one of these new. I got mine on 'G' day. August 1st 1989. Bought it from a dealer in Ponteland, north of Newcastle. We haggled around with a few dealers and got it new for £4999! Ours was the same colour - Cargo Blue. The choice was yellow, white, red or blue. Ours was the basic spec. No radio (and so therefore no aerial) and no rear wiper. I cannot remember if a fitted radio was even an option. There was an option for a 5th gear I think. (Maybe wrong on that though).
Original spec had absolutely no lining in the cargo bay - nothing to protect the paint. The side walls all around had the grey pressed cardboard that is visible in your rear door.
We bought a large sheet of rubber and lined the floor. I never bothered with plywood. I then squirted waxoyl everywhere (had it dripping out of the chassis). Living right by the coast I was worried about corrosion which was horrendous back then. I had a Honda Acty that, no kidding, needed a full respray when TWO years old! Shocking really.
Fuel economy was dreadful and the typical conversation, when meeting other owners, was around the poor MPG.
My fuel cap seal failed, so you might want to check on that. It would leak fuel out of the filler if the tank was full and you turned left! Changing the plugs I found very difficult and I was told that, in the trade, these vans were so difficult to work on, that the nickname was the 'Bedford Bastard'.
I sold mine in 1995.
Great story bud😎
Nice to hear a story of another Rascal and from back in the day when it was new :-) A radio was an option, you'll see our radio in the video - not very hi-tech with it's MW and LW and single speak ;-) Interesting about the Acty, I know early Honda's did rust - really good thinking about protecting your Rascal, especially given as you say, that you lived by the sea. About the fuel cap - appreciate you sharing that, ours is perfect though. Glad the video brought back some memories.
The cutest little van ever made.
Great video. Really enjoyed hearing the history of the van too.
Hope you keep it going for many more years!
I've just bought one 😁
An AM-only radio with no cassette player is amazingly basic for the late 80s. What an amazing time capsule though! The only other Rascal I've seen on CZcams was missing massive chunks of body panels, including almost the entire offside front arch!
I'm 18, really trying to get ahold of one as my first car
I remember seeing this van at a Cumbrian car show just after you bought it.....Still had the price stickers in the windscreen!
Ive been looking at this on Ebay, its great, a credit to you. If I had the coin I would have no hesitation in buying this van. Good luck with your sale.
Love it!
This little van reminds me of my old Toyota Lite ace I used to have.
In comparison, the LiteAce is huge! We had a few of those Kei vans in central Europe and I always have a laugh when I see one because they're so short, narrow, yet tall. The Subaru Libero was definitely sold here, and I think we also had the Daihatsu Hijet and the Suzuki Carry. Few of them lasted very long, some died of engine failures but I suspect most were claimed by tinworm. By the end of the 90s most of them were gone.
This is my dream car
Beautiful litle van👍👍👍
Same car as Suzuki Super Carry or Daewoo Damas :)) 👍
Amazing
What a cute little van…. The shape of it reminds me of the van from Scooby Do, the Mystery Machine…..
Just wondering, were any of these vans ever made with automatic transmissions?
I’m guessing it kind of light weight judging from the slamming of the driver side door.
The van looks almost show room new.
What ever you’re doing to maintain it, keep doing it!
I'm fairly sure you could get automatic ones in Japan but not sure about Europe. Over here automatic transmissions still don't have the greatest reputation, many people are proud of only driving manuals.
Used to drive them in the 80s
Would love this
Oh god I love it. Send it to a yank like me will you?
Nice car...

Hello sir I need same car please, can you tell me something
Acá en Chile llegó como ASIA modelo" tower". 1999 - 2001
El Asia Towner es un Daihatsu Hijet, el Bedford/GME Rascal está basado en el Suzuki Carry de octava generación.
I didn't realise they still made that type of roller skate
I had a Honda acti pick up and a Bedford rascal van, always wanted a Subaru sumo though.
