Five strangers find themselves trapped in an abandoned industrial space, metallic collars strapped around their necks. They are COLIN (23), a youth worker who’s too kind for his own good; HARRY (28), a stiff and studious soil analyst; KAYE (25) a confident up-and-coming R&B artist; NIDAL (30) a furious rapper rejected by the industry, and EVE (18), a ball of fear in pyjamas. A spotlight illuminates their captor, DYNAMO (20). She tells the disparate party that they have been carefully selected to play ‘Rhyme or Die’. A beat kicks in as she lays out the rules: Everyone has to improvise rhymes to the beat, and failure... is fatal.

I know! You can't game Dynamo! Originally we'd used the word 'purple' instead but then found that did in fact rhyme with the word 'hirple'. Its a random Scottish word but Dynamno would know it

When I first performed some spoken word
The stage felt hostile, the stakes felt high
As though if I failed I could, well... die
(I know it's a melodramatic line
Obviously I didn't die, and everything was fine)
I later used the inspiration
To write a short in one location

7:45 this scene of her is so good. The actor did a great job with the expressions and got me caught off guard.
I guess I posted my comment on this video too soon, since you brought it up first lol. The fact that Dynamo's smile faded into a "look of dismay" after Eve asked again "why are you doing this" got me wondering what was really going on. One could interpret that in many ways. Like for example, is Dynamo doing all this under duress herself? was she given orders to do all this?

This seemed to me like a combination of two things. One was an old Twilight Zone episode where a bunch of people wake up in a room with no way out. Turns out they're actually dolls in a trashcan. The second was, of course, Saw. But, since we never found out why this was happening, throw Cube in there, too.
That Twilight Zone episode sounds great, do you remember the name? I love the Cube but The Circle 2015 was more of a ref for us. Particularly in terms of the lighting and them being trapped on the spot

Actually there's a third movie this is related at. The movie is called the running man. There's also a character called Dynamo who's outfit is a bit similar and the character sang opera if I remember correctly. One nice fact also that the Finnish name for the movie is "juokse tai kuole" = run or die

the actors were so good, the change of look in the last guy’s face when he realized he couldnt rhyme with opponent was so subtle and oscar worthy. i love the antagonist too, really everyone did a phenomenal job

That's a very accomplished short. I liked the fact that there was no explanation, just dive right in! A contained, neat concept, fast-paced and gripping, even if rap is not your thing. Well done. I hope it does really well for you.

I know it's night but I had to return to this. The acting on the channel is truly chefs kiss. And now I'm rhyming again! Does the habit of doing this ever end. Yes, I know that was bad. Get off my back, Chad.
I really enjoyed this! In fact, I could see it very easily being a full length movie in the vein of Saw - although if I had one criticism it's that Dynamo's a really cool idea for a villain, but she needs a more striking design, like all the best horror villains do!
Omg the first guy who dies is Samuel Blenkin from Black Mirror's Loch Henry episode! So cool! Love this short :)

Omgggg the acting in this film is so good this is honestly one of my favorite horror short films I've ever watched. It's just ten minutes but from the start I was so invested in all of the characters and Dynamo's portrayal is absolutely fantastic I am obsessed

@@adele-muguettedelabernaque1357 I think its because of Villain. It depends on how you pronounce villain, but the most common way to say it it "vill-EN", not "vill-AIN" like with chain and vain. Villain looks like it rhymes on paper, but when you speak it, it doesn't. Idk if Dynamo(The one killing the characters) would let it slide if you said it like AIN but me personally, I wouldn't risk it.
To keep it safe in this situation, you would end the first line with insane or something

This was really good. Kinda like the death traps of some horror films but freestyle rhyming singing version.
More so than the actual deaths, I have to say I was a bit more unnerved by Dynamo’s excited way of talking. It spooked me a bit.
But all in all, I loved it

I'd die first just asking Dynamo too many questions about the specific rules of the game. Are we counting imperfect rhymes? Is syntax important? Is grammar important? Is there a word limit? What specifically is the time limit? Can we have a bathroom break?

@@maxrlincoln (don't yell at me for not rhyming. I can never match the timing) The best I could guess was either radiation burns like Gabriella's trap in Saw X or electrocution. I could probably think of something better if I got a proper look at the inside of her collar.

It's like if Jigsaw liked music and rhyme 😊😊 Really nice concept.
The fact that more than half of the characters in the "game" were racial minorities made me think of a scene from the movie Sorry to Bother You, in which the main character is forced to rap to entertain white people. The scene is symbolic of the way that the music industry has commercialized race and created an afterlife of slavery wherein Black people are still made to entertain white people just as the enslaved often were. Both that scene and the movie as a whole depict the way that white people have constructed a system in which racial minorities' best hope of thriving is to please the dominant race, which I feel is also symbolized in this short film by the phrase "Rhyme or die". Not sure if this message was the intention, but interpreting "Rhyme or Die" in the context I just described gives it a whole new level of power and meaning, so I thought I would point that out.
