How did I never find this channel before researching silverados? Former Engineer, doing car reviews, with an amusing rating system, and no signs of shilling for local dealerships or mfgs, AND doing restos/mods??. This is like everything I want in a youtube channel.
I love how I always know what to expect when I see your videos. Humorous thorough and concise.
The Porsche 944 S2 from 1989-91 had a 3.0 liter 4 cylinder with 208 hp. Wow! Has technology changed over the years.
Isuzu has a 3L turbo engine but it's diesel, which IMO is better suited to off road
A year later i saw this i had a chuckle at these numbers. Our old suburban with the 454 had the exact same HP/TQ figures in 1997!!! What a riot.
I'd opt for the 8 over the 4 any day, especially since the 4 is turbocharged and can drop half it's displacement. That 4 might be great new, but I very much doubt it will age well. Also, when did a low end truck costing over 50 grand become a good deal. I must be getting old.....GET OFF MY LAWN !
It’s running technology from diesel engines and a fully forged bottom end to aid in long term durability, per GM.
@@sleeper.simulant7327 also I drive a truck for a company, a big diesel one, and boy am I glad I didn’t pay for that turbo being replaced, just picked the truck up the other day and it cost multiple thousands on the invoice. I’m in the wrong business, replacing parts on super expensive junk that was literally designed to break seems very lucrative
@@monkmoto1887 Speaking as a mechanic, it's only lucrative if you own a stealership.
Holy, 430lb-ft out of a 4cyl is pretty impressive for a factory output. So long as the rods stay on the block, that is. The definitely need a 2 door sporty car that would be ~1/2 the price of the Corvette with this engine. The drone footage was cool to add to your production too.
@@franktags136 For the sake of the buyers, let's hope Chevy engineered this little engine to take all that torque. Guess only time will tell, so it might be wise to avoid being an early adopter on this one.
@@paulm749 they didn’t. These 2.7 turbos all suffer from horrific fuel mpg. See to try to keep it from detonating they run a very rich fuel map in the ECU this results in the engine running overly rich to prevent it from blowing itself to bits. The engine is seriously over boosted and over stressed and they come in blown up quite often. You absolutely have to flog the piss out of it to get it to preform. It’s also paired with the 8 speed automatic a transmission known as the destruct-o-matic for its problems with hard shifting, juddering and other issues. For a truck that works do not pay 50k plus to GM, if it’s gotta be GM buy anything with an older LS based V8 and a 6 speed auto, those don’t blow up. Seen to many of there’s traded back in cause the owner wants better MPG
yep, the revised 4 cylinder Turbo from GM, people asked for more torque, so they added more.
I just bought a 2023 Sierra Elevation 2.7 based a lot on Sara's review I watched a year ago. I came back to the video to watch it again after having purchased and driven a similar model, very happy so far.
Really cool with the drone shots - worked really well on the off road parts - I think you got the balance right as well - so many people go overboard with a drone as soon as they get one. Also nice to see you still barking mad - don't ever change you and you sense of humour are the main reason why people watch this channel!!
This was just a test, I bought one of my own after filming this to use in the future.
WoW. .. I love the undercarriage assessment you give in your reviews. And that you take the time to research oddities that appear with these newer vehicles. This sets you apart from ALL of the other car reviewers out there
I was waiting for the "She's a bleeder" comment when talking about the backpressure valve.
Tackling those two hills with so little drama was truly impressive! And I agree with you that sometimes, the lower trim levels are just more desirable cars.
We didn't have Z71's when I grew up and we didn't gouge our oil pans open every 10 miles w/o skid plates, how did we do it?
Props to GM for sticking with a regular oil filter and not going to a cartridge.
Thank you so much Sarah you do a phenomenal job at reviewing these vehicles I've been looking to get one but I wanted to wait a couple of years to see what other versions they came out with.
Cool drone shots! 😎 Nice addition to the reviews 👍
Love the aerial drone and panning shots!
Love my 2021. Can't believe they up graded the tourque from 2021 to 2022. I have 384 ftlbs compared to 420 or 430 ftlbs. Quick and nimble.
Wow! Awesome vid!! You brought out all the real cool engineering of this truck!!
I have heard about this truck with this engine nad been wondering what it's like.
Thanks for doing this truck that a lot of reviewers might ignore. You do a good job selling it, I kind of want one!
I have a 2021 GMC 2.7 LTE version. When I got it I traded a 2017 5.3v8 and wanted another v8 but none were available. I was hesitant about the 2.7 but I soon learned to love it and I have gotten as high as 29.9 mpg on a long distance drive.
@@dwightneisler3844 - Two wheel drive or four? And you find it powerful enough? Thanks!
@@randolfo1265 4x4. LTE version. Plenty powerful. I only tow a 12 ft trailer with a Zero-turn mower, no problems.
Shutting down cylinders to save fuel is dumb. It causes premature cylinder wear to the "off" cylinders. Honda did it with the Odysseys in the 2000's and they are notorious for oil burning once you get some miles on them. Dumb... love the lab coat look 😍
GM has been doing this since the 1970s, at least. Maybe longer, but I'm too brainfried from work to remember right now. The premature cylinder wear isn't the only problem that they've had by far.
@@robertt9342 It's normal for a small amount of oil to squeeze past the cylinder rings as the piston cycles, and it combusts with the air and fuel already in the cylinder without a problem. When Honda designed its cylinder deactivation system they didn't account for the quantity of oil that would pool up in the cylinder without combustion actively clearing it out. As a result, the oil would all combust at once when the cylinder was reactivated and cause issues with the piston rings and egr.
Premature wear from no combustion causing cylinders to be mechanically forced down instead of with help. Causes extra strain on bearings and cylinder walls. It’s terrible for engines
Just love the sound of technical measurements done in metric units, and aluminum pronounced correctly.
I just like that it has the handle gear shifter on the dash where it belongs!!! Their new pho-dodge tiny shifter in the center console blocks valuable space where I need to set drive thru food bags on toad trips!
These trucks are nice and the 4cyl is highly underestimated, i love the simplicity.. my new work truck is a 3500 4x4 and we often use it on muddy snow packed roads in remote locations, the traction system when using off road mode works fantastic, no need to spin tires throwing mud everywhere , it just goes right thru .. thanks for the review
I love the 2.7s, driven a few at the last job i was at, the turbo is quite loud, and the truck has torque for days. Sounded like a tractor in some of those shots
Ya know that +- switch on the column shifter is actually VERY useful while 4x4 and much better than console shift too. 👍
Nice drone shots, thanks for the new perspective.
Another awesome video Sarah.
I think the 5.3 would be a better long lasting combo. Boosted 4's don't always hold up that well.
Boosted 4 cylinder Will hold up as long as not abused or pushed beyond there means and maintain properly.I smile at the fuel pump ⛽ every 420 mi between visits 😃
Modern ones hold up pretty well. Also this 2.7 runs a forged bottom end and they mimicked technology from diesels to make the engine more durable for more extended periods of time…
@@sleeper.simulant7327
For sure, the 4-Cylinder hold very well.
But, i will dispense easily on 200NM and 100HP instead of the Sound.....
They do not hold up that well. Cylinder deactivation is bad for engines also turbo is just another thing that can go wrong. Specifically when people extend oil changes. Chevy says 7500 miles but that’s too much. Sludge starts happening and it’ll clog oil feed lines. Wasting turbochargers
I`ve had my 2022 Chevy Custom since January 2022 and now have 13k on it and it has been great. I`m averaging 20 mpg for everything and am surprised still at the power for a four banger and 310 HP motor. I had a 2008 Ram 1500 with the 4.7-liter V8 that was also 310 HP and it was way less powerful than this was. Time will tell if this truck goes at least 200 thousand miles.
Thank you for a underside look of the vehicle's it's a refreshing change
I agree with Scotty. A turbo 4 cylinder usually wears out faster
I have seen a few older Saabs with turbo 4's with over 250,000 and the head or oil-pan never removed.
They're fun to drive when they are new. But become endless money pits as they age.
Can't stop laughing about "Cinamom rolls" and "Plood".🤣🤣🤣
Didn't expect so much power in that car.
👍🏻
Colour is also nice.
I was impressed it made it up those hills with those wimpy tires! I think in a standard cab short bed it would be a decent Off Roader with just some AT's!
Sarah, that's a pretty real world test drive, thanks
Best thing about this newer Gen Silverado is they added back the reg cab and short bed Configuration I bet this thing scoots in that configuration. This did impress me. If i had waited to buy something this would have been on the list of vehicles to buy.
Wow crazy world getting craziness, gM trucks "boring", for crazy people 😜
The turbo 4 is the only engine you can get with the scsb silverado and sierra
Did I miss it in a previous video, or was this a first for an overhead drone shot of donuts? Awesome! Thanks as always, Sarah. 👍👍👍
I think this is the first drone shots. Overhead and eye level following the Chevy. Dynamic views.
Sarah had mentioned getting a drone months ago....costly..... and I mentioned
that other creators were having success, except one. His drones were being taken out by eagles.

I'll jump on the bandwagon here and applaud your use of the drone, that adds a in interesting element to the overall video, well done!
Yay car reviews are back, like the donut drone shot. 👌
Thanks, I ended up buying a drone after testing one out filming this video.
Cool to see some drone footage in this review [especially of the doughnut] Sarah its a nice touch!
Best explanation of a dual volute turbo with cylinder management ever.
Noticed some new drone shots! Looks good.
I am a huge sucker for a throaty V8 engine. But this thing convinced me that someone needs to give me $50k to put one in my driveway! Loved this review!
Torque rating is really impressive, especially at 3,000 RPM. I was thinking maybe this was a diesel.
Now, on to get my 88 4.3 V6
Up to 120 hp 😁😁😁😁
Sweet truck! thats a mega 4 for sure! incredible tork going up the hills
Another great video this week
I hope you enjoyed the break from wrenching 7 days a week. I found this review refreshing, especially after seeing how well a 4 cylinder can handle a full size truck. I laughed as your burger bun analogy tanked.
I like that mild redesign on the front end. Imo, it looks better than the model it replaces.
Great review. I wonder how long that 4 cylinder will last. Nice drone shots.
Wow - just when I thought your reviews could not get any better, you ad drone-photage and take it to the next level - a million times better than TV, that's for sure. - And yeah - a 4-cylinder in a huge truck sounds like such a weird thing, especially an American truck that you would think only could have a V8... Awesome review - Thank you for what you do and Stay Awesome!
No one even wants them in a compact as the real world mileage isn't much better. I fell for this in the '80s by being talked into buying a I6 instead of a 5.0
@@lesliehorwinkle - no-one in the US, I guess you mean, - here in the EU, 4-bangers are still the norm in most regular cars and will continue to be so for some time still, untill the EVs take over all-together.
I had the 2.7 f150 and that thing was a rocket. Bonus was the lighter curb weight. Handled way better, and higher payload.
Just to clarify, there is no black paint under the High Temperature Wax coating in the frame. It is applied directly over bare steel in a dip tank. The frame is welded together, dipped in a cleaning solution and then waxed. The transfer case logo is not American Axle but Magna International (who supplies the frame itself to GM). The plastic panel covering the front suspension components is not a “skid plate” but a stone shield.
@@dougsmith7195 No I don’t. This particular frame was more than likely built in Mexico at Formex as the majority of the short box crew cabs are.
Almost nothing on there is American made. The salt in winter where I live would eat that frame pretty quickly. My father had an 89 Ford F-150 with a straight 6, it hauled better and lasted longer than any GM product we ever had. The gentleman that bought it is still driving it today.
You can use SEM Cavity Wax to protect the undercarriage the wand can go in between tight spaces.
I've been driving turbo charged Saab's for nearly 30 years now. My current 9-5 is tuned to 300 HP and 330 ft pd of torque out of a 2.3L 4 cylinder turbocharged engine. The torque delivery of a turbocharged engine is totally different than an NA engine. Peak torque comes in at low RPM and stays until way up in the RPM range. This means the engine can do more work at lower RPM's and the power feels effortless. Also consider that I get 33 mpg out of my car on the hwy. If I had a 300 HP v-8 under the hood i'd be lucky to get 23-24mpg. My Saab 9-5 has 217K miles on it and runs perfectly and still outruns almost any family sedan on the road. If these turbocharged engines are engineer right they last and make impressive power with better fuel econ.
Spare-wheel matching and Hotdog reference 😳 Tossing the chuckler sayings out-there, within this vid. 😆
You're review of this truck is very informative and entertaining 👏 👍 😀
Sweet, reviews are back ☺️
This was supposed to go up on the other channel, but I needed to get ahead on videos going into the winter incase I get sick. I was filming and editing last minute all last month.
I'm really surprised with how impressed I was with this thing. Who would have thought a 4-cylinder full-sized truck would be this good. What a beautiful color, too.
That engine is impressive and I want it in my 86. Also kudos on the drone shots that was cool. Is someone helping you film or how did you film it? Or if you have a whole episode on the behind the scenes that would be cool to see how you film it
I had a 2019 with a V8 and the torque converter went out at 30k miles (service record says “Glazed Over”). It took 3 months to fix and when I got it back, it behaved the same way as when I took it in initially. Sometimes when coming to a stop, it'd feel like you got rear ended. In those 30k miles, I had the roof leak, went through 3 recalls on the brakes, the head end unit would randomly reboot when I got a MS teams notification on my phone while plugged into my iPhone. I sold it and went to Nissan and have been mostly happy since, although the Titan has its quirks as well - not nearly as much as the Silverado. (Edit for typo and update to issue ).
I've never heard of GM using a cvt in their trucks. That must be new. Sounds like a terrible idea though for something meant to put down power and tow.
I had one , it pulled my 5,500 camper fine . I sold it and got a Ford 250 . Towing I averaged 10.5 doing 63 miles per hour .
Transmission started acting goofy at 10,000 miles , I could see it having issues down the road. Engine was fine .
love you candor and style. Engine bay big enough to support a V8 and yet a 4 banger sized motor should leave space “like a hot dog down a hallway”…..please never change and if you have to move to some other platform i’ll follow you. I don’t say that to any reviewer or vehicle channel. you are unique and awesome! keep it up…Please and thank you!!!
Wow! What a excellent review!
Great use of your drone! 🍩 📷!
Nice review! I imagine the boost you’re lookin for wasn’t there partially due to the fact it has a transfer case, so it adds a bit of weight. The 4x4 can only tow 9100 vs. the 2x which can tow 9600. I drove a 2x and was pleasantly surprised at the launch. I still bought a V8 refresh though. Look forward to seeing more!
Great review informative and covered a few items that are important and usually get missed. This 4cyl when introduced sounded a typical GM mistake, but you shed some light on the positives I prefer inline engines now GM needs to put the inline 6cyl back on the menu and offer it with a base none turbo option! There was a time when a Chevy could be had with a 6cyl a radio and air conditioner without paying for "THE PACKAGE BUNDLE" (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID-KISS)
I have an old jeep xj with the legendary gm straight 6. It being over 20 years old, and less than 200k miles, the engine is still very strong.
The Autotrac Single Speed Transfer Case is either made in Mexico or here in the United States in Muncie Indiana. Manufactured by Magna Power Train. I use to work at the Muncie plant years ago so I recognize the symbol on the case when you pointed it out
i could listen to you talk about automotiveness all day
I agree with you Sarah, full width rear seats are great. I miss my 20's.
Nice review as always Sarah. I just have a problem with the 4 cylinder engine. It's probably the wave of the future.

Your reviews rock,Sarah!
The logo on the transfercase belongs to Magna. Besides that great review as always. Greetings from Germany

Hey Sarah. Unfortunately the frame is waxed only. No paint underneath. If you live in Canada like I do, you have to re-wax yearly, as it wears off on certain sections. You can literally scrape the wax off to the metal, only don’t use your nail. That stuff is hard to get off fingers. 😁
Cool ride! ......you matched your shirt to the color of the truck 😃
On bun and cinnamon roll analogy is my new favorite
This motor doesn't make a lot of sense for most Truck owners but I have been impressed with the tech involved in it. It has been out over a year now and I haven't heard too much bad except the fuel mileage. This motor belongs in a car of some sort just to make things exciting. I would also love to see the intake tech and valvetrain tech in a V8. Spoiling a turbo right off idle is pretty slick. Love my GM stuff.
I get what you're saying about the motor not making much sense in a truck... That is 100% true for people that use it as a truck, the sad thing is most don't anymore. It's more of a fashion statement, in my opinion for a majority of truck and larger SUV drivers. They should definitely put it in a car of some sort but it needs to be RWD as GM would likely put it in a car in a wheel hopping, torque steering, tire spinning FWD pos...
@@justplanefred Cadillac uses that basic engine in one of their cars.
@PhantomPhoton I'm not saying it won't tow... Just may not for people that are regularly tow heavy loads. Sure it will tow 9100 lb but if you do it every other day perhaps you should be looking for something else. If you tow occasionally it should be fine.
The 4 cyl makes since for light hauling and commuting. I am still hesitant to think of towing close to max alot with it. This was a great review as always and looked great with the matching shirt!
I had a 15 model with the 5.3 and on the hwy it would get around 25 mpg depending on how fast I was driving. But running speed limit it was around 25.
...Excellent in-depth review...
Nice review. GM makes a great driving truck.
I heard GM also sells this truck with an Isuzu sourced four-cylinder diesel engine in it.
If it's the same four-cylinder diesel engine they put in their small delivery trucks, it's definitely worth buying. Those Isuzu diesel four cylinders are powerful, tough and reliable. They would have zero trouble moving a pickup this size and they live on turbo's very well.
They have a 3.0 straight 6 diesel for the US market. Now that dodge dropped their diesel chevy is the only one left with a diesel in a 1/2 ton.
@@bill3641 the brand CEO claimed that it’s because they’re going “full bore with electrified powertrains” but that’s probably bs.

Im really looking forward to seeing the Colorado with this motor in it. Might have to trade in my 18 3.6 for one
The advantage of this over the Ford 2.7 ecoboost, with fewer cylinders they can make the block, rods, pistons, etc. beefier to handle the boost. It's the main reason why Toyota opted for a 3 cylinder on the Corolla GR. I don't expect this to become the sales leader over the 5.3, and I would personally take the 5.3 if I were buying one because V8 sounds and the LS/LT motors are known to be pretty reliable and have huge aftermarket potential, but it is nice to have options. this engine is going to be awesome in the Colorado/Canyon
