Dear Dr. Hayley, I was hoping you could help me with this situation. I have been notified that I have been placed second on the panel for a PhD position and should the person who has been placed first, be unable to accept the position, I'll be offered the scholarship.
How should I respond to this? I'm extremely grateful but would like to know when to "move on". Would it be appropriate to ask for some clarity on when the other candidate has to accept the position or not?

Just for additional information, some universities ask you if you applied to the other universities and reasons for it.

Hi! I have an interview for a full funded PhD scholarship next week and I've been told the interview will last 20 minutes. This seems very short to me? I imagine there will only really be time for 3/4 in depth questions. Is this standard?
For my last job the hiring manager asked one question. I passed with flying colors and that was it. There are fairly simple questions in every field that you can't bullshit your way around. Either you know the answer or you don't. The more questions they ask, the less sure they are about you. If you can convince them with one out of one, then you are gold. If they are still fussing around with you after ten, then you are probably toast.
