Kelly was the ultimate entertainer! This is from back when Hollywood had stars with genuine talent.
I can't even imagine how hard that was. The roller skates back then had metal wheels that had no grip unlike the resin wheels of today. He made it look so easy and graceful.
That's Gene Kelly for you
Well that explains the long strides
Also from a technical point of view as a skater...
He has a looooooooooong wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide floor to be able to play on, the MGM backlot which they made look like regular streets, and they could've kept them all clean without a SINGLE little stone on the floor, I've had enough experience to know that it only takes one single little stone to completely throw off one's skating game!
Plus that space allowed him to build up more momentum and carry him further with each stride movement of the legs, whereas if you tried to perform this act on a stage, you'd be lucky if you could get 8 metres of space free to do that!
Conditions had to be as perfect as possible for Kelly to do this number!
@@Ignauhak : You're absolutely correct: a long, wide, SMOOTH, FLAT, PREPARED skating surface, NOT a concrete sidewalk. I had skates like this as a kid, and trust me, you can't go 2 feet in real-world conditions -- Gene Kelly or not. His glide up to the letterbox is slick. Talent, yes -- with a million bucks of hidden production support! Anyone who thinks movies are real is a rube!
No kidding. Dancing and skating are not exactly the same. Damn genius.
Pov: You're on the street in 1955 and see Gene Kelly glide by on rollerskates.
And, suddenly, everything else I had to do at that moment...could wait just a little bit longer! 😃
I'd wave my fancy hat to him
Genial
I'd probably join him lol. I'm probably gonna be able to keep up with him though, but I'll definitely have a blast.
Only in heaven on the streets of gold will you find Gene Kelly now.
Can we just acknowledge the fact the everybody dressed better back then
Not only that, but a gentleman wouldn't even THINK of going out without a hat!
I know! I really try to recreate the 50’s look as much as I possibly can
nowadays we got clothes that simply say supreme and ripped up jeans as “fashion”
"Better" but impractical.
It's a movie,if Edith Head made us gowns we would be well dressed as well , not mention makeup and hair styles . Watch a doco maybe???
Just realized that all of Gene Kellys most iconic performances are all about the realization of being in love
Most of his tap numbers and all of his jazz ballets. His widow has said that "Gene was the epitome of romance."
Masculine, athletic, graceful, handsome....today's so called stars aren't fit to lick his roller skates!
@The Watcher How true!
Sammy Kid2 The only place where you can find them is Broadway
Benedict Cumberbatch, Viggo Mortensen... there are more. But those two are manly, handsome, fit and are musicians. Actually Viggo also is a polyglot and a photographer and ... well he has more good qualities than Gene Kelly. Open your mind ... search around...
@@agnidas5816 Hes not saying that there is no such thing as a good actor anymore, what he is saying that Hollywood doesn't harbor many talented people like it used to. We just watched kelly tap dance in freakin roller skates, i havent seen talent like that in hollywood in years upon years.
@@agnidas5816 More good qualities than Gene Kelly who was a great family man, loving husband, loyal, courageous friend, good citizen, staunch supporter of liberal causes even threatening to his own career, and supporter and nurturer of talent? Open your own eyes. As Nina Foch told her friends, "Gene Kelly was one of the good guys." There are several videos right here on CZcams in which some of the biggest names in old Hollywood talk about working with Gene and how they loved him. The group includes Frank Sinatra, Leslie Caron and Cyd Charisse. Don't skip the clip of Jules Dassin, a great director on the HUAC's "black list," in which he discloses that, at the Cannes Film Festival in 1955, Gene Kelly was the only American who would speak to him and who made a point of being seen with him.
He can dance He can act He can sing He can do anything 🔥🔥🔥
And he was one of the Screen's greatest choreographers.
Everyone: "Tom Cruise does his own stunts!!!"
Gene Kelly: "Hold my Old Fashioned and hand me those old-fashioned metal roller skates."
Great comment
"If she can think I'm wonderful then I must be...quite a guy."
Oh Gene, you don't know how many people still think you're amazing!
My favorite movie with Gene is the Pirate
As a tap dancer of almost 9 years, I can tell you how complicated this routine is. The move at 3:41 when Gene Kelly clicks his heels together is one of the most notoriously difficult steps in tap to master. I still cannot do it fully, and to do it twice on one leg like Gene Kelly did is even harder. Absolutely incredible hard work and talent!
And he did it on roller skates.
@@kariebossa4851 I know, that's amazing!

Kelly was muscle blue collar dance speak easys and Astairre was white collar and ballrooms...Garland was youth especially with Rooney...O'Conmor was the Collegiate...Vera was the debutante. who became girl next door...Cyd was the Romance of adulthood....Danny was the one to cheer the kids up... am I wrong?? Did he just tap in skates? Amazing!
So did Donald O'Conner....

@@AriesArtist8 he's one of a kind
This movie had just started when I turned on my TV. Didn’t seem like my kind of flick - I was a 1980s kid - and I planned to switch channels. But I got sucked into the plot and ended up watching, and enjoying, the entire movie, and this scene was a pretty nice payoff for sticking with the flick.
@@thisisme2476 wow, thank you for sharing that!
To this day I still think he was one of the best dancers EVER, and this scene clearly shows it. No one else could do it! And he keeps that casual smiling face like it was so easy all the time! Magnificent dancer, amazing skater (it was 1955, they didn't have the techinques or the skates we do now), wonderful singer and great actor. I could go on praising him all day! Thank you, Mr. Kelly, for the magnificent moments you gave us, your humble audience!
Well technically, Astaire and Rogers did it in Shall We Dance, years earlier. But this is a lot more elaborate. I like the early portion best, where the character isn't even aware he's on skates. The second segment is more self-conscious, less seemingly effortless.
And who doesn't think he's one of the best dancers ever? No dancer I ever met. Not that I can dance worth a lick. My sister studied ballet. She'd talk your ear off, you let her. ;)
my jaw is on the floor. i'm a roller skater, and cannot express how difficult this routine is! you can see that he absolutely worked his ass off. but best of all, in the eternal Kelly fashion, he looks like he's having the time of his life doing it :))
Same here! He was an absolute professional and required it as well, but damn, he made it look fun…
As a kid I confused two scenes, and thought there was a song called "Skating in the Rain."

I have been roller skating for 6 months. I just stumbled accross this clip. Can't stop re watching it. Fabulous.
Whenever I am feeling sad, I watch this, and it brings a smile to my face :)
I do the same, I have a full playlist which always starts with The Worry Song
"If you worry, if you worry, if you bother your head,
it won't help you, it won't help you, it will hurt you instead"
Gene Kelly: the man, the myth, the legend.
baba yaga??
That could be said about many men-
No Myth!
The sign of a professional is when they make their job look easy. Gene Kelly made this look so easy, one believes anyone can do it.
OMG!! Gene is tap dancing WITH ROLLERSKATES ON!! He was dynamic in every way!!❤ Continue RIHP Dance Emperor!!❤❤❤❤
I think my comment on this is not only is this an incredible genius routine but he does it with timing, grace, flare and a smile on his face, no wonder the guy was a superstar. He makes it look easy, have a go everyone.
And to think Gene Kelly did this Extremely Difficult Routine at the age of 43! There was nothing ever too challenging or difficult for this Man! Such a Legend!
Once upon a time the people were so elegance...
Can we all agree gene is an elite performer. THIS STUFF AINT NORMAL U KNOW!!!😂
Gene Kelly was my Idol When I grew up. Rest in peace Gene
That's unbelievable. Mr. Kelly was on another level.
Only Donald O'connor could match this. Brilliant routine
Wait wait wait wait wait wait!!!! Did this man just TAP DANCE IN ROLLER SKATES?!
If most of us practiced a lifetime we couldn't duplicate this. Yet it's just one scene in one of his movies.
I have rarely seen somebody this cool in a video.
Who else just melts when this man sings?
He blew my mind with his skating ability
My favorite Gene Kelly movie, and my favorite number from it.
Director to the background extras: Look absolutely amazed, and then act impressed as hell, and clap like crazy.
Background extras: EASY!!!
Gene Kelly really promoted self-confidence. Love him 💕
We stan an agile, self-loving king! 👑💕
Can we take a moment to not only appreciate the beautiful voice but dancing skills of the late great Gene Kelly. This man is an icon he’s one of my all time heroes and I’m so sad that he isn’t alive anymore for me to meet him. I genuinely love him so much. I am only 17 years old but some day I hope that I can aim to be like him. He was truly impressive the fact he tap dances in Roller skates and makes it look like a walk in the park is true talent.
He always had a very Radiant smile that made you happy. RIP 🪦 Gene Kelly an iconic legend until the very end love you so much xx
This guy has more talent in pinky toe than entire casts of movies in 2021.
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Gene Kelly might just be the finest dancer who ever lived!
i discovered this from watching Leon the professional when i was a kid
same here
Amazing. You don't see much talent like this today
Gene Kelly was wonderful in his movies for dancing and singing, always so smiling and happy. Very athletic body. Brilliant 😊😊
Gene Kelly was awesome 👏🏻
I was so impressed and then he started freaking tap dancing in roller skates. What the hell.
Born in the wrong era, I love this classic so much and many others.
Gene Kelly should've got an Oscar for this
Without social media we were so much more innocent and unaware of world problems then. When I'm feeling a bit down in the morning I watch this. Never fails to cheer me. Love Gene Kelly, such a talent.
Without social media, there weren't anywhere near as many problems.
Stop watching the news.
We did not really watch the news then.

Choreograph and direct. As his wife says, he was a quadruple threat.
WOW! I can't believe I've gone all my life without even knowing that clip was ever made! That looks so hard and so amazing!
love the clothes people wore back then EVERYONE SO CLEAN AND NICE TO EACH OTHER NO MASS SHOOTINGS NO CRAZY PERSON RUNNING AROUND STABBING PEOPLE YOU CAN'T EVEN WALK YOUR DOG AT NIGHT AND ENJOY THE STARS AS SOON AS I FIND THE REWIND BUTTON YOU KNOW WHO'S PRESSING IT FIRST
Just want to point out this isn't real life. There were lots of crazies running about robbing and stabbing and murdering. And loads and loads of guns. This allowed folks to see a better side of the USA. To leave the reality of big city life behind.
My gosh... How could he do this tap dancing with skates without slipping and falling? Absolutely amazing. He - legend!
Gene Kelly will never be forgotten.
I knew he could skate since seeing Xanadu
❤️
According to George Burns, who was also an excellent dancer, as well as a historian of vaudeville, two wheels per skate were locked for stability.

Those were times when actors WERE actors...with loads of artistry to perform and delight us..
Sometimes I wish I can live when you could go to the movies once or twice a week to see them.
Eh, I don't know if it's a lack in quality of actors available nowadays, or the lack of quality movies.

@@albertchin1050 I Think we have some pretty talented people in the industry , how ever their work is orchestrated and administered by the corrupt, bloated and corporate film and music industry.
@@Bennahr_Fett I have to agree. Film companies these days are owned by corporations. Everything now is about the bottom line. This kills creativity and originality.
When Gene does it, it looks so effortless…
Just saw an interview where Kelly offhandedly blew my mind about this number... He talks of his brother act starting out in local Pittsburgh clubs, and that they cooked up a dance bit on skates using acrobatics. Then he remarks that this later filmed number was easy, since those were simple steps compared with what he'd do with his brother, doing full back flips on skates and a lot more. Which raises the issue....HE COULD TAP DANCE AND DO BACK FLIPS ON ROLLER SKATES!! Never thought I'd watch this number and ever think "Boy, I wish he hadn't held back with what he did here!"
In an age when actors require stunt doubles to WALK THROUGH DOOR FRAMES, its refreshing to see REAL talent at work.
Funny.
That 'New York street' set always looks so classy.
there will never be another gene kelly. ever.
I'm afraid he was a oner.
Thank you, Mr. Gene Kelly. Just amazing dancer in all his performances created. Love the skates and Fedora hats, too.
Absolutely wonderful and no computer trickery neither. One of the most amazing film scenes you will ever see and it did take a few separate takes to get this masterpiece filmed. Gene was superb and he could sing too. How many actors today can sing, dance and roller skate to that standard...Let me think...oh yes NONE. He was certainly a one off.
Not one take, several.
No twerking and fake voices here
I really wonder why everyone, including myself, finds Sinatra more charming than Gene!
He wasn't the best singer but his voice is pleasent enough.
You know you can train 98 percent of people to have a decent voice, the other 2 percent have a rhythm disorder.
That is because it is actually technically easier to sing than to talk, if you can talk you can learn to sing.
Donald O Connor did it too
This dance is one I watch anytime I need to smile 😊 Gene Kelly is so amazingly talented and I don’t see how anyone wouldn’t find this performance endearing!
Unbelievable versatile talent Gene Kelly was. Could do such difficult, various types of dancing throughout his long career. Just so enjoyable and so GREAT!
Did this win an award? Sure as hell should have!
Randomly clicked this video. Made me feel one million percent amazing
What's amazing is you can tell he tapped in the skates and didn't even have any sort of wheel locks on them. Absolutely insane, I can't even jam skate well, much less tap.
I come back and watch this regularly. So amazing. Cinema.
Certainly belongs in the Top 10 Most Spectacular Musical Numbers ever included in a feature film.
Him: sings a whole song on skates
Me: falls on my bike after two seconds and goes back inside😂
This song is the only reason I learned how to whistle
That's so cute.
OOOh, love Gene, that smile...
To top it all off, he had the profile of a Matinee Idol. A man made for the Movies.
I know that both Fred Astaire and Donald O'Connor performed dances with roller skates before Gene, but his performance in "I Like Myself" truly stands out to me. Not only does he dance for the whole sequence in unlocked roller skates, but he does so many things; he tap dances, he performs risky jumps and movements, he speeds. He even clicks his heels together. All on roller skates!
This is true craftmanship and is an ample example of why Gene Kelly was one of the best dancers of all time.
한세기를 통들어 이분같은 엔터테이너가 없을듯합니다. Best entertainer in this century.
True talents, singing dancing AND acting. Almost every star in Hollywood did each of those thing
I love those kinds of people. Now you can only find them on Broadway

Like watching anybody do something expertly, he makes this look easy. Can you imagine how *hard* he must have worked to do that?
Gene and I have the same birthday. I can't dance but he certainly could!
A década de 50 foi mágica em Hollywood. Foi a década dos filmes clássicos que são lembrados até hoje. Foi o auge do estrelato de Hollywood, que hoje não chega nem aos pés do que um dia já foi.
The many hours of choreography and physical precision this dance-skate took to have it look so joyful and easy still blows me away to this day. Wow!
Can it be? I like myself, she likes me so, I like myself.
When you've finally come out of your depression.
Gene Kelly makes it all look so easy. Fred Astaire was great, but I really think Gene Kelly was the best dancer of the 20th Century - with the Nicholas brothers coming in a close second.
Same too :)
Don't forget Donald o connor
for my personal opinion, I think we can not compare Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. They had a different style and an incredible mastery of their art. They both revolutionized dance and musical comedy. Fred Astaire embodies all the elegance of an era. Gene Kelly embodies the freshness of a new genre. Gene is more acrobatic than Fred who is more graceful to him. Personally, I prefer Fred Astaire but it's only a matter of taste. I really love Gene Kelly and just have to see this performance to see that he was an outstanding artist.
@@sweetmagglam338 Cyd Charisse said it's like comparing apples to oranges. They're both delicious but different.
@@sweetmagglam338 Gene's more modern sensibilities actually looks a little more dated now compared with Fred's classic style, in my opinion. Classic is timeless after all. If you put them against a modern song of this era, Fred holds up pretty darn well. Still, Gene can't be beat when it came to physicality and innovation. Love em both!

Gene really didn’t age for a while. He looked the exact same in Anchors Aweigh.
That was one of the first movies I’ve seen with him. I will not forget when Gene danced with Jerry Mouse
That is true. It made his rapid decline in the Sixties, into a chunky old guy in a toupee, more dispiriting. By the time of 'Xanadu' he was a museum piece. But in the 15 years between 'From Me and My Gal' and 'Les Girls' he seemed timeless.
