WALKS IN HAMPSHIRE at HAMBLE (& THE PINK FERRY) (4K)

- In this episode of my series “ Walks in Hampshire”, I take a 5.5 mile circular walk from Hamble, up to Bursledon, around to Lower Swanwick, down to Warsash and back to Hamble (using the Pink Ferry to cross the River Hamble!). Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the Hamble Foreshore Pay & Display car park and start my walk with a wander through Hamble village which included a look at the church of St Andrews.
My route then takes me North across the old Hamble Airfield, across the Portsmouth to Southampton railway line and into some delightful woods known as Mallards Moor.
Entering the outskirts of Bursledon, I pay a visit to The Jolly Sailor pub - used as a filming location for the BBC TV drama series Hoard's Way (originally broascast in the late 1980's & early 1990's).
I then cross the Bursledon bridge to Lower Swanwick and basically follow a path on the Eastern bank of the Hamble estuary. This takes me past a nature Reserve as well as a number of Marinas.
My final leg of my journey takes me on the little Pink Ferry that goes from Warsash Ferry Hard, across the Hamble Estuary, to the Hamble public jetty.
I finish my walk with a welcome ice cream from a cafe at Hamble.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.

Lovely video and gorgeous little Logan.
Back in the 60's I spent 11 long (seemed never ending!) terms at T.S. Mercury. I cannot say I enjoyed my time there as it was pretty rough, to say the least and let's say educationally somewhat deficient. However, years later when I discovered they had raised the entire place to the ground (including a beautiful half scale copy of an Opera House and wonderful large Georgian house) I was massively gutted and shell shocked. Today on the site is Mercury Gardens, a pleasant enough estate. The only single thing remaining from my days is the T.S. Mercury Memorial...tragic. I will say one thing; although hating most of my time there it certainly set me up to be self sufficient and independent at a pretty young age.

Looks as if Logan enjoyed his various paddles, in fact he seemed reluctant th leave the water on one occasion.
I've never explored Hamble or Bursledon for that matter, but the former looks beautiful.
You may recall that I was brought up in the Meon Valley, both at Warnford and East Meon, so we'll remember seeing HMS Mercury, high on the hill overlooking East Meon. I was somewhat surprised that it was now in the Ham ble area. When I googled it, the station apparently closed in 1993. It was situated at Leydene House, East Meon. There is no mention of it being relocated anywhere else. Great video Dave.

I just love that little pink ferry!
Spoilt for pub-choice back in Hamble Dave, and you chose ........an ice cream! I don't blame you though, it looked a hot day. Logan looked like he was enjoying the ferry ride, watching all that was going on. Tried to get into Hamble once, a very popular place on a weekend, it was gridlocked, so I turned around and drove on. Looked a lovely spot, will have to try again one day.
Alas I was driving .... and as I had already had a "pit stop" at the Jolly Sailor, I was a bit restricted to the ice cream at the end!
Woah they are my friends at the end there! Hamble is amazing with lots of history. In fact I live in the houses built prior to the HMS Mercury :)

What a delightful walk and the bright pink ferry at the end was fantastic. I think my two girls would love this and it looks perfect and cooling on a hot summers day. Finished off nicely with a wonderful ice cream - well it would be rude not to. 🍦🌞⛵

This looks really nice Dave. I think because it reminds me of the waterside road at Bosham ... the road that is on the other side of Bosham village, but you can look over it's waters to see the village and church etc. Except your video had lots of boats in ! ... It looked awesome there. Thanks for going and making the film.

Good afternoon Dave , such a wonderful video and walk for the little fella .
This area and walk I know too well from living the area when I was younger .
I feel every other comment are going to be a pub crawl ( yes it is 😢) not these days for me thanks .
I could talk all day about things but a few things for yourself and other viewers.
The bugle is now much smaller from 20 years or so , yes the crazy ferry did introduce the ferry .
The royal yacht club , it has been a while but is or has been the headquarters in association with the royal in cowes in the island.
I hoped you liked the ‘ jolly ‘ sailor ( it was never cheap for a pint there ) but you pay for the location. In the late 80’s - early 90’s we used to Moore up on the pontoon to a few ( wonderful times ) , I feel it was the the that the harbour masters put there foot down but I think you can a little still.
Coming into swanick , ‘moodys’ boat yard but once again I feel they may of been relocated ( still going ) .
Into warsash ( known for navy training , still very much a part of our defence.
The pink craft , yes nuts but Dave great fun , when I was younger’ what I remember is that a shall timber boat with a outboard .
Dave you spoke about rope ( the victory) , don’t know if you nipped in , they have rope hanging from the ceiling’ helps your balance .

Thanks for sharing another lovely outing. What a lucky dog Logan is to go to so many places - I remember our dogs used to get beside themselves at the prospect of a walk. Sadly the grandchildren don't share that enthusiasm, preferring to stay at home and play with their computer games!

Thanks David. The info board (not far from the Ferry jetty at Hamble) basically gives a lengthy history of Hamble during WW2, included are two photographic reproductions one showing Hamble airfield and the other the US base on Hamble Foreshore .
I have always wanted to go on that pink ferry. I think it is actually part of the Solent Way? Was the path on the east side of the estuary tidal? Looks like Logan is a natural sea dog! Very interesting video. Thank you.
Thanks Jean. Although the Hamble estuary is tidal along that stretch but as far as I know, the path on the Eastern side looks as though it is "dry" all the time. Logan enjoyed that walk - I think he did at least 4 "dog dips"!
Hi Dave, just came across your channel and loved watching this, especially on such a cold wintery evening! Got to say your research into the Hamble is really well done, could I ask what some of your sources are, I'd like to find out more!
Thank you Sean & indeed welcome to the channel! I do all the research for the walks during the Winter months (as the weather isn't so good for filming then!) & each walk can take up to 5 hours to prepare. I take notes with me - not so much of a script but just basic facts uncovered during the research. The videos are not meant to be fully blown professional documentaries but to have just enough information to satisfy the curiosity of the viewer (and indeed I am no expert!). The information comes from a number of sources & ideally I like to have at least two sources for the same bit of information in order to try and improve accuracy! I use the following sources: British History Online, Arthur Mee's "Kings England" Books (Dorset, Hampshire etc) .... all published in the late 1930's, Sir Frederick Treves "Highways & Byways of Dorset" (published 1906) & Historic England (although not always 100% accurate!). Then there are the "specialist" websites such as Megalithic Portal (for barrows & earthworks etc) and The Woodland Trust Ancient Tree Inventory (which actually pinpoints some of the famous ancient trees on a map for you! Many villages these days the have history of the village on their website & more recently many of them have prepared Local Plans (to "protect" them from developers!) which often include a detailed history of the area. Whilst Wikipedia is often a good starting point for information, it is not something to rely on! I also use the National Library of Scotland Maps (off the internet - it is free!) where you can look up maps from the 1950's and indeed back to 1888! I also have quite a few guide books and local history books -most of which have been bought for very little money through Ebay. I love finding little snippets of information about a place that sometimes even the "locals" had forgotten about. My main objective is to be as accurate as possible and if I am not sure about something then either say so ..... or avoid it all together! I find that with some aspects of history, much of it is a matter of debate & opinion and so often it pays to be "vague" about dates. Recently I came across a church where Historic England dated the tower as being built in 1840, the village website said 1842, the church website said 1844 & Arthur Mee said 1846 ....... so I just said "built in 1840's"! Hope that helps!
@@DaveFord thanks Dave for your brilliant message, yes you can really see that you've done your homework, I was particularly interested in the hamble river area as I have just got a mooring from the harbour master and will have my boat on it from May. Did a bit of research into the hamble area but there was plenty of interesting facts in your video that I hadn't come across before.
Looked through your videos and there are dozens that will keep me occupied over the winter! Thanks for your efforts putting these up, it's what makes CZcams great!
