Perfect timing on this video. I just put snap pads on my 5th wheel and was thinking to myself that the jacks looked awful close to the ground and could catch a curb or something else. Looks like an easy fix.
Make sure you add antiseize to the threads of the bolts.
I'd love to see you do a quick video on how to zero out the jacks. I'm having issues with my mid jacks every once and a while. Was told to zero it out and it would fix the issue. Just a thought.
The user manual for your jacks will have instructions.

@@BigTruckBigRV Nope.
You said "overstroke"... it made me happy
Wow that was way easier than I thought! Adding it to the to-do list
From past videos I was wondering if the jacks were to low. Glad you addressed the issue.
Thanks for the info. Something i didn’t know needed done after installing the jack pads. Going to get mine adjusted today!
I bought the same socket kit when I needed a thin wall socket to take the trailer off, keep it in the truck all the time. Also recommended it many other folks.
Great video. Love watching "how to" videos so I can learn more things.
I would have flipped those bolts around to place the nuts on the outside to make the initial torque and periodic retorque a little easier. Also, in my former life as a nuclear mechanic and plant inspector, we always used a thread lubricant on both the threads and on the nut / washer interface in order to achieve an accurate torque. We would also retorque after one hour because the bolt would “relax” a little. Not as critical on an RV as in a nuke plant, but a habit I got into.
Good Modification, and Good at explaining what you're doing too. Thanks.
Great info-thank you. Can you do a video on maintenance of Ground Control 3.0 jacks?
Okay I didn't know about the 7" to the ground I added the Snap Pad so I will have to go to my storage and check the measurements. Another great video again, oh yeah I did order those sewer connections that you did also from Etrailer.
Great job completing the snap pad install. I bet most don't look at the instructions. Now, on the 7" recommendation, not sure where that came from, but I attended Lippert training as well as RV leveling systems training and the rule of thumb is to run a string from the rear tire at ground level to the lowest point on the rear of the RV. There should be nothing below that line when the leveling system (electric or hydraulic) is in its retracted state. Same goes true from the ground level of the front tire to the lowest point in front of the RV.
Yes, that's correct but LCI in those instructions say 7" min
@@BigTruckBigRV copy that JD :-)
Awesome video, I purchased the snap pads as soon as I saw the snap pad video. Didn’t know I could lift the landing gear up, my next quick project.
Love the fact you use the correct tool for the job, it makes it so much easier with an Impact wrench. I am still pending retirement but buying my stuff and bought an impact wrench just in case needed for such jobs, also nice to use for tire lugs ect. I got a Milwaukee, but Duwalt are nice as well.
THANK YOU .
NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THIS.
(NEWBIE) HERE LOL.
WE GET OUR RIG NEXT SPRING. MARCH 2023 YEAAAAA .
FEEL LIKE AM BACK IN SCHOOL LEARNING ALL THIS.
(HAPPY TO WATCH THE VIDEO,S AND NOT READ BOOKS ON ALL THIS.)LOL
(I WILL LET YOU READ THE BOOKS AND THEN PUT IT TO VIDEO FOR ME.) 👍🙏
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR VIDEO.
I just raised my rear jacks GD reflection 150 series. I was only able to go 1 bolt hole( 1”). My only problem was backing up my drive way , this should help.
This was super helpful, as I just bought 6 Andersen blocks for our new 5th wheel, but the back to were too low for me to get the Andersens under there. I got to looking at it and thought, "I can probably move these jacks up higher." thanks JD.
You sir, are a master of your craft.
Thanks I just went and did mine today mine are hydraulic but really appreciate it thank you very much Riverstone Legacy 39RBFL 2021
Glad you were able to adjust yours!
Nice vid. I don't even have a 5th wheel, bit enjoyed watching nonetheless.
I have the pads ordered for my new 5th wheel but had not even thought about having to adjust the height, thanks for the video.
Nicely done.
Thanks for the video, I just got done doing mine. I have the same setup as you. However no snap pads, we use the andersen leveling blocks. Have had trouble using them under all jacks due to not enough clearance. Raised the struts 2 holes, we will see how that works. Auto leveled in the gravel and everything worked fine.
I laughed seeing your hat in frame. It made me think back in the early 2000 watching home improvement and how Wilson would show a little bit more of himself but have funny ways of blocking his face. The channel is about information and not you but I just think it’s funny. Big fan for a few years now
Really like the ground control system. Had trouble with one of the landing jacks at first. Lippert is really a great company to work with !
From the install manual you need to run a string from the bottom of the tire to the lowest point on the rear of the trailer and install the jack so the pad is higher than the string. If that is not possible then you need a minimum of 7" clearance.
I cant post a link here but you can google "ground control 3.0 oem installation manual" the PDF is on the support.lci web page.
Thanks for the link info.
This is exactly true!
I bent my middle leveling jacks going down a steep driveway and had them repaired. Asked them to raise them higher. They didn't do it. So after I got it back I raised them myself. It's not a difficult modification to do.
Something that needs to be considered when moving jacks up is if you ever need to manually crank the jack (if motor or controller ever fail), you loose space access to manual crank port at the top of the jack. Since I too carry and impact gun, if I ever have a stuck jack I would just remove it from the mount until it was repaired.
I have a spot on the bottom and top for manual crank.
You have the ability to add two more bolts as well, now that the motor is out of the way. 👍
i have been eyeing the jacks on my Brookstone 344fl.....i added snap pads and will be moving the jacks up this week
Great work as always! I'm not a fan of most of the stuff hanging on the bottom of rigs, it's almost as it the factory wants you to have stuff down there so low you're guaranteed to break! Seems they could do a better job of getting things out of the way, it's as it you can't even drive over a speed hump without taking out a generator exhaust muffler pipe or a jack etc. Again nice work!
I think this video was the closest we got to seeing your head. Great channel. 😊
I feel like there could be a joke here about overstroking your jack..
Closing in on 400K Subs!
Great advice!! I will be checking mine also
I'm actually considering moving mine down a notch. If I don't block them up, they run out of stroke on even pretty lightly sloped spots.
You could also use a floor jack to hold and then raise into place.
an umbrella hat?! are you really Wilson from Home Improvement?
We’ll JD wear a hat! We may never see his face, but I saw the hat!
Hi, I recently purchased a new Alliance all-access 26rd. My rear landing gear is only 4" of the ground when fully retracted.
Just so you know and are very clear not all brands and models will have the vertical clearance to move them up. Such is the case with my Grand Design 337RLS. They are mounted as high as they will go.
I spoke with Lippert about doing this and they said raising your jacks will I’d your warranty. The only way around this is to have an RV dealer certify the work. Sadly, my dealer will not certify. Makes no sense to me, but I’m not willing to void my warranty. Guess I’ll just have to work harder to avoid obstacles.
My rear jacks on my Montana are low moved em up one notch and maxed em out. Still too low and I have to be very careful when on uneven ground.
You could benefit from a magic creeper for sliding under to do these type of adjustments.
I’ve run into situations where the size on each side of a socket is needed and stick to separate sockets.
Looks like a great fix. Could you explain why the need for the snap pads in first place?
Wish i had clearance to move my jacks up, they are within 1" of slide floors, slides on both sides. Looking at removing the entire foot assy during travel.
FYI I would have put three bolts on each side when jacks were reinstalled
The pads have quick disconnect pins...just remove them when traveling
Those still look WAY too low. We went dry camping over Memorial Day weekend. The turnoff from pavement to the dirt entrance of the free camp area had a drop down of more than 8" I went easy and slow and it was no problem to get through it. Those stabilizers would easily have hit and gotten ruined. I'd have them no lower than 1/3 the tire height.
Would still need to be careful.
What’s the point of adding the Snap Pads if you then need to use the Camco blocks?
Why not just remove the entire pad and store them until you arrive at your destination? 4 clips and you're done. What you've done is make your trailer more wobbly by having more leg in use, IMO.
I was told not to move the landing gear it would viode the warranty
Could you please do a vid on what torque means and how to do it? I have a torque wrench, very heavy! Looking at it won't do it. I have no idea how to use it. I bet i am not the only one. Not everyone has had someone to teach them, and everyone assumes guys are born knowing and women don't need to know, right? 😄
Any chance you can show exactly what to do when your "Auto level" doesn't actually level your 5th wheel? We have the Ground Control also on our 2020 Chaparral but after auto leveling (with the slides in and no one touching the rig) it still leans down in the front drivers side corner. I can find videos on how to reset the level, but none on how to actually manually run the Ground Control system to bring up just the front corner?? Thanks!
czcams.com/video/OWBNNRm3p3g/video.html
@@BigTruckBigRV No, that didn't help.
Just curious why not put 3 bolts on each side?
The bolt placement too.
I installed them per LCIs instructions.
@@BigTruckBigRV gotcha
Bolt placement seems odd since the motor was no longer blocking the third bolt.?
The Anderson magnetic leveling buckets are far superior to the snap pads in my humble opinion. They also limit the amount of stroke on your auto level jacks which increases stability while level at camp.
Both serve a different purpose
@@BigTruckBigRV what’s the other purpose?
2 ways to adjust these super easily. Tools you’ll need depending on fastening hardware. I lowered leveler then manually powered it to extend it up, used a spud wrench on either side to chase the holes to make putting the bolts in easier. Also if don’t want to manually power the jack you can use a hand crank scissor jack.
Smart move, I have always worried about how low the jacks seem to hang, and btw, JD are you wearing giligan's hat?
It's a Boonie hat
I picture JD would be wearing a Giligan’s hat…just to be unique.
How do the wire connectors come apart? is there a release tab on the connectors? I tried pulling on them and they would not disconnect : (
I noticed you mentioned Continental j rated tires at the end. I run Goodyear H G114’s on my fifth wheel but difficult to find anywhere but the Continental 17.5 J rated tires are. I’ve never run a J rated tire. But you seem to be pleased with? And from a later letter in the alphabet I’m making an assumption that they are at least as good as the heated variant.
Why don't you have it farther up and use the hitch pin to manually drop to the length needed? I am not familiar with yousr but the ones I have seen on other rigs have an inner tube that gives more length on uneven terrain.
What do you really think about the snap pads. Do you really think they are worth getting and why?
What is the difference between the extractor set and just the lug nut socket set?
Can you please post link to socket set?
Done. Added to description AND it's gone down in price!
Wouldn't you want the adjustment measured when hooked to your truck?
No, because they are adjusted based on being level.
But wouldn't you "drag" a poorly adjusted jack when hooked to your truck?
@@robbanks7191 only if the RV isn't level when towing. Actually it depends what conditions you are towing over.
Did you add that cover over your auto level panel? I worry about water intrusion on my unit.
The likely hood that the slope of the ground would be great enough to come into contact with the leveling pad is extremely low. You would bottom out the RV before coming in contact with the jack pads. Don’t see the need to do this adjustment.
I'm more worried a out speed bumps and pot holes
Did you add that cover for your auto level controller? If so what is it?
In your opinion what is better? Hydraulic or Electric jacks?
They both have their perks. I've made several videos on them both.
👍👍👍
Love your videos. Did your 5th wheel come with hydraulic brakes?
Yes
I use the anderson bucket levelers and I have problems with them at time can or should I move mine up like this ?
Possibly. For your jacks to work properly they need to be able to extend about 1/2 the way out
Just paint it yellow and call it a 🍋... They've sold you a project not a trailer 🙄
Off topic but do you have a way I can ask questions aside from the comments section?
Email or facebook
Hey JD, You don't use the Anderson Jack pails? I thought you did as you modified them and added the metal piece on top? Do you use jus the Jack pads that are attached to the jacks?
I use them when I'm on extremely uneven ground on jacks that need the additional space.
@@BigTruckBigRV So, if in have cement or a very good camp site, I should be good just using the jacks with the rubber pads?
I did this process and now my leveling system won't work😧😤
Just not working at all? Not sure why. The jacks will only believe the ground is a little further away.. you may have raised them too high perhaps. There are TONS of good LCI videos showing how to reset the system or get it corrected.
How much clearance do you have to have above the top of those jacks? I have a similar problem with my ground control unit but I don’t know if I have enough space above to raise my jacks (maybe only one inch).
Thanks for showing these how to videos!
I had a ton of space. Partially because I have a 12" ibeam frame.
How many watches do you own?
Too dang many
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
