WOW! Didn't know Dorney had one of these...I worked in Palisades Amusement Park back in the 60's. We had the first Monster as I worked for Eyerly Aircraft who manufactured them at leased space. Ours was all black with a very strange antenna on top. It only had 5 sweeps (arms) and all open on the bottom to see all the working parts. It was assembled from very unusual components. Some of the drive motors came off from the mothball fleet of battleships on the Hudson River. The Monster was a challenge for maintenance but somehow in 1965..I kept it running all season. I miss the Park as it was a very low paying job but truly a blast.

A classic ride - rarely seen these days. Also known as the Spider and the Cyclone. It's still better than it's slightly more modern descendent the 'Polyp' because on the Polyp the seats do no spin. I went on the Monster in the early 90'swhen they had one at Blackpool pleasure beach UK but they get rid of it some years ago as it had stopped been a crowd puller.

The Polyp is a German manufactured ride. It uses a hydraulic eccentric...not the same effect.

Leah Harvey Yes but the cars on this version tend not to lend themselves to long spins -(unlike the classic 8 armed Octopus) this is because of the varying rotation patterns of the arms - the shifts in direction induce and then counter-act the spin of the cars.
