Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda conducts the LSO in Beethoven's Leonore No 3 Overture recorded live in concert at the Barbican in London on 20 June 2024.
Beethoven wrote no fewer than four punchy overtures for his only operatic work. Number three was rejected for being a miniature opera in itself. Leonore, eventually renamed Fidelio, follows a courageous wife who rescues her beloved husband from prison.

One of the greatest of Operatic Overtures and Beethoven's music is such a force for good in these troubled times. Although I love what Gerald Hoffnung did with this piece, calling it Leonora Overture No. 4 for a bit of light relief now and then. Brilliant playing by the LSO under Maestro Noseda's directon, as always.
