    Amen!!! Love your advice here. I’ve advocating “Not Out In Front” (name of my new, soon to be website 🙂) for severals years now. I teach the volley EXACTLY the way you instruct in the video. My book, 21st Centruy Tennis, talks about the myth of “out in front”. I advocate “out to the side”. Very good video!!!

    First! Great videos, keep them coming! Your advice for the forehand (with the stone-skipping analogy, the emphasis on supination etc.) may be the most important tip I've ever seen. Former table tennis player, the old technique always had the tendency to creep in.

    Nice. It looks like the same principle applies on the half-volley too, based on your slo mo

      This only works with continental. I recommend that grip.

    Can you do or have you done a forehand volley video, high ones especially when crossing are tough

    Excellent stuff. Am I correct in understanding the forearm-and-racket-together notion, as keeping the wrist neutral, i.e. no pronation or supination, and perhaps no extension or flexion either? I.e. only leveraging force by "hammering" (ulnar deviation)?

    • @TomAllsopp
      @TomAllsopp  Před 3 lety +2

      I'd say thats pretty much spot on. Thanks

      @@TomAllsopp Thank you! I've been working on my volleys quite a bit, using your footwork and hip pointers, with great result, but still struggling with weak BH volleys. And they look _exactly_ like the ones you showcase as bad form in your video. And I've thought for a long time, the cure is to move forward, and hit the ball in front. And it's uncanny how my form looks exactly like the one where you exaggerate the stretch forward, because that's what most coaches focus on, so that's what I've been trying to replicate. Can't wait to try this out tomorrow :-)

      @@jeanb.3493 Yes. Getting the ball in front makes many technical issues worse. Let me know how it goes.

    I think in higher levels you need to made a slight grip change maybe just a few degrees so the the wrist is more behind the racket on the bh volley. If not it gets too flimsy in a continental although there are strong and weak continental.

    • @TomAllsopp
      @TomAllsopp  Před 2 lety

    How bout the tension in the grip? On a scale of 10, how firm is it?

    • @TomAllsopp
      @TomAllsopp  Před 3 lety

      Its all relative to how firm I want to hit it.

  • @jeanb.3493

    Just wanted to comment that I see *many* coaches teaching the weak, stretched-in-front BH volley. In another video (intuitive tennis), he makes a valid point that the 2HBH is not a lefty FH (for right handers). But many teaching pros and WTA/ATP pros claim so, because that's what they've been taught. How come these misconceptions are still allowed to be reached?
    Btw your explanation has led me to tighten up my BH volley considerably, and when it fails, it always comes down to the errors you point out in the video, one of which is the hitting the ball in front.
