Petros Gaitanos is not an "extraordinaire pasltis" in fact he is not a real psaltis (chanter) at all. Just because he puts on a black robe (raso) and sings at the chanters stand (analogion), that does not make him a chanter of the Orthodox Christian church. Just as wearing a priest's vestment doesn't make you a real priest either. First of all, in order to be allowed to chant in the Orthodox church you need to be made an anagnosti by a bishop. If you haven't been made an anagnosti you have no right to be up there-just the same as someone that hasn't been ordained a priest by the bishop has no right to conduct a liturgy in the alter. Chanting is a sacred part of the Orthodox liturgy. It is not a performance that one gives like performing in a concert hall. He may have a pleasant voice but he is not chanting. Chanting and singing are distinctively different just as classical music and jazz music are as well. To add further insult, he is also wearing a black robe with a red collar. The red collar is something only a headchanter (protopsaltis) is allowed to have the distinction of wearing after studying the art of byzantine music and attaining a diploma from a qualified byzantine music conservatory. To attain a diploma, one has to study many years and then pass a rigorous exam given by at least 5 master chanters. I am surprised that the priest of this church allowed Gaitanos to sing up there as he was once a chanter himself before he became a priest and is well aware of the rules of the church.

As far as I know the red collar has no meaning; it is just a decoration that was added on the 'raso' after years.

Petros Gaitanos has studied Byzantine Music at the Athens Hellenic Conservatory and he received his degree with honors, you can read this information at his Biography.

yea we all know how the system works over there, he paid the $5000 tuition fee and they gave him the diploma, just like 90% of all the so called "chanters" who think they're fooling everyone, but when you open up a music book like the anastasimatarion and you tell mr. Gaitanos and every other "Gaitanos" to read a simple piece of byzantine music, guess what? they can't! why? because they never earned their degrees, they just paid for them. Maybe they can fool the old ladies in church, but they don't fool real chanters who didn't just pay but actually earned their degrees-And the real issue lies with the schools that have dropped so low that they'll give anything away for a euro. Shame on them and their teachers.

As far as you know, you know nothing, because you are wrong, the red line (not red collar like you said) red LINE on the collar is worn by a chanter that has received the first degree in byzantine music the PTIHEO, which signifies that he is a FIRST CHANTER. It is not a "decoration" like you said. Their is a reason for everything in the Orthodox church just like there are specific reasons why a priest wears the garments he wears. In addition to the red line on the collar, there is also a black hat (which looks similar to a hat worn by a monk) that is worn by the next rank up, that of an ARXON PROTOPSALTI-a distinction given to chanters by the Patriarch of Constantinople, so if you don't know what your talking about, please do everyone a favor and keep your opinions to yourself. People are interested in facts not what you think. Thanks!

Aaaahahaha jealous of this guy? are you serious? he's not even chanting he's singing, obviously you don't know the difference between the two that's why you say that. That's like comparing opera to pop music.
