  • This is a 1973 2-stroke mercury outboard, also a 2 blade prop on the old sears boat. This one runs rougher than the 1971 and not as fast at 28 mph.

    Just got the same motor for $0.00 because a guy was having a tantrum and I watched him throw it in a dumpster. Only issue was the fuel line to carb was cracked; 3 inches of fuel line cost me less than $1.00...best part is that it's retrofitted with electric start!

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 11 lety

    Hey, good news that it's working!! I think the recoil problem is because the teeth that engage into the flywheel are not fuly retracting. You can fix this by winding up the recoil tighter into itself so that after it starts, the teeth retract fully. Running it like you had it will not damage anything immediately, but will eventually break the teeth. Hope this works!!

    Hi, yes they have a fuel pump. Depending on the year and carb, it is either attached to the carb or a separate box near the carb. Follow the fuel line in to find it. The pump is simply a rubber membrane within that box that vibrates back and forth and likely has a hole in it. An easy fix if you can find the part.

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 11 lety

    Hi I agree I've tried a number of other tanks and hoses and checked that the vent was open. Anyhow, I've sold it so it's not my problem any more!! The 72 and 73 are identical except for the face on the 72 says Keikhaeffer Mercury and the 73 faceplate says Mercury Marine.

    Hi here are a couple of things you can test; don;t check with the spark plugs in, it could be a faulty spark plug so use an in-line light test light to look for spark not the plug itself. You can swap the coils and then see if the problem has changed from one cylinder to the other. Look for any broken wires (or dried and cracked wire coverings) and change them.

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 11 lety

    Hi, great news. So the coil that is not working is the one feeding the spark plug when it does *not* start. The coils are both the same,but both need to be working for it to run right on both cylinders. Post a video when you get it going!!

  • @texjames2000
    @texjames2000 Před 11 lety

    Ok, I was also thinking it could be something with the gas tank not being full. I disconnected the fuel line from the motor & it stays primed that way. There is seepage around the connection to the gas tank, but think that is fairly normal. I gassed it up & will get out on the water with a full tank & see what it does today. Thanks for your help.

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 11 lety

    Hi it`s not hard to do but don`t use it if there is no water coming out. You can take it to any dealer to replace, it`s not a costly repair, the part is about $12, mostly labor. You can try to replace the impeller yourself, there`s a lot of you tube vids to show you how. You can get the part online. The trick is to make sure the small key is properly lined up so the impeller spins properly and the hoses and shafts are put back in the right place. It`s tricky but not impossible.

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 13 lety

    @flautissimotraverso Hi
    Thanks for the comment. If the motor is connected to remote control, then you can reduce the idle speed where the remote cable connects to the motor. Remove the remote throttle cable from inside the motor (it's the cable on the right), then adjust the cylindrical brass fitting by spinning it in or out on the threads of the cable. Then refit it on the motor. Don't mess with the carb settings if you don't have to. Let me know if this works!

    Hi I just checked it out more; the gears in the foot are always set by spring to forward. Then there is a cam in the foot that shifts to fwd and rev. This cam wears out. It would need to be changed. It`s somewhat complicated, but if ever you decide to replace the oil seals in the foot, then change this cam at the same time, or vice-versa.

      Peter Kalil are there any videos of this procedure? Also where is a good place to get parts for these motors? I am working on what used to be my grandfathers 200. It won’t go into gear and needs a new needle valve in the carb. Probably a new impeller also. I appreciate any advice!

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 11 lety

    Hi It's a multi step job as there are a few seals. You'd be interested in the youtube vid called "Lower Unit Seal Replacement" (3 parts). You can also see how to pressure test the lower unit to locate the leaks. Good luck...

  • @SnipeShot314
    @SnipeShot314 Před 12 lety

    The motor (from what i understand) has been completely gone through, new CDI box, impeller, carb rebuild,etc however I have a faceplate, wrap cowl, and two props, 11 pitch (2 blade) and 9 pitch (3 blade) off of a '73 20hp that if memory serves should work. About the gas tank and hose Im not sure, but i have two that will work, one from the '73 20hp and the other from our newly aquired '81 18hp.

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 12 lety

    It's odd that the cowl is missing... To find another you may have to buy a parts motor. If it runs well, has the tank and hose included and has good compression (should be around 120 psi or more each) and a functional water pump then it could be worth while. One trick to determine usage is to check the starter cord to see how black (oily) it is. A white cord means it has not been used much (or used alot and replaced.) A reasonable price could be about $500-$700, its an old motor now!

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 12 lety

    Hi, you'll have to see if the motor is running on both cylinders, maybe it's only running on one if a coil is blown. Can test for fire in each spark plug. If not, it just may be overloaded, if so you're better with the load prop; 3 blade 11 inch pitch. It won't be fast but it might plane a heavier load.

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 11 lety

    Hi Good on your for the recoil. Check the rope at the handle from time to time and get rid of any frayed rope by pulling it through and cutting it off. For the fuel, it sounds basic but have you tried another tank and hose? There is a pickup in the tank that may be cracked and sucking air. Maybe only works when the tank is full and fails when below a certain level. If you can't swap the tank and hose you can take valve off the tank and see if the pickup is damaged or clogged.

  • @texjames2000
    @texjames2000 Před 11 lety

    Out of curiosity do these have any type of fuel pump? Mine runs of as long as I go slow, but when I actually turn the throttle & have to pump the primer bulb every 5 seconds or so to keep gas in it.

  • @SkimmerTime
    @SkimmerTime  Před 11 lety

    Hi, it may be running one 1 cylinder rather than both. Remove one spark plug lead and see if you can start the motor. Then replace it and remove the other one and try to start it. If it starts both times then the coils are good. If it will not start one of the 2 attempts then that spark plug or that coil is probably shot. That would be an easy fix.

    Have you tried to replace the spark plug wire? It could be badly seated inside or cracked and losing spark along the way. That would eliminate everything else except the cdi box. It does have a black cdi box right? Otherwise there are points and you there is a youtube video on how to replace those.

    • @SkimmerTime
      @SkimmerTime  Před 9 lety

      Joe Romeo Hi sorry for the delay. It is unlikely that the problem is in the linkage, but check it out anyhow. It runs down the front of the shaft so look for broken or loose linkages. These motors default into forward and the shifter moves the pinion gear in the lower unit into neutral and then into reverse. It is spring loaded into forward so when the motor runs in forward only it is usually a problem within the lower unit.

      Check that the engine is idling down far enough, the engines have a cam on the throttle that will not allow it to shift if it's revving too high. If you find the shift cam cannot engage into the slot on the throttle cam, adjust the idle set screw to lower the idle speed and try it. These set screws can come loose and cause this problem
