Not saying race wasn't an issue--far from it--but the economy was booming, the music was great, education was affordable and meant something when it came to finding work and even as for coloured people there was still opportunities, especially in the music industry.

I'm assuming you don't know what this is. The guy singing and dancing is "Jim Crow", it was like a figure back in the day that had laws formed based on Jim Crow. These laws and characters were used to oppress as well as treat black people inhumanely by not letting them to vote, not letting them access clean toilers fountains, etc. Discrimination was quite high against black people.

Insterestingly enough, according to multiple sources, despite the popular belief that is also portrayed in the presented movie (a movie about retired blackface minstrels explaining their shows in the old days) it seem that after the civil war the vast majority of minstrels spectacle were performed by black comedians themselves.
Like a lot of black representation associated with segregation and the Jim crow Era the representation of black characters with charcoal skin and red lips wasn't considered too offensive and even positive productions or at least not particularly mean spirited toward black people (like the snow white animated black version "black coal") used those representations. It really became something reflected as offensive after segregation ended.
Of course this is not to Say that none of those representations were racist or very mean spirited but i think it's interesting to look back objectively at the era and it's reality.

Besides the obvious racial stereotypes with the painting of the face, this "Jim Crow" character was used in minstrel shows to openly mock the song, dance and culture of African American people in the United States. The song and dance are meant to be poke fun at actual Black music and tradition. These shows basically allowed White entertainers to make a living by humiliating Black people and their culture, and exposed White audiences to an untrue depiction of African Americans. Those people then take all the stereotypes and prejudices home with them, and they assume that that's what Black people are like, even if they have never encountered them before.
There is obviously a lot more to all this but hopefully that helps! :)

Okay so the movie is indeed from the 50's but it's not a monstrel movie, rather it's a movie about minstrels, it's about a young boy finding himself in a retirement home with former minstrels performers trying to understand what led people to do those kind of things, the movie is zctually pretty satirical and critical of those things.
